OSSSSSSSS. ■!! iMil* IMII—IOIMUiJW—JU CONSTITUTIONALIST. It: --- -: r AUGUSTA: 1 — u FRIDAY. APRIL I, 1885. J A I tilings in life are subject to ebb and ' How.' Public curiosity and public feeling are ll like every thing else in this respect; and a c . dead calm is apt to succeed anv unusual i excitement. We have talked of nothing, i written of nothing, dreamt of nothing and 11 thought of nothing, for some days past, but J Lafayette. His expected arrival raised as all on tiptoe, awakened all our senses, and quickened every pulse to “ double quick £ time.” His visit kept us so. We have re €orded the proceedings while lie was here ; ) and now his departure, and th e end of the \ song on his stay among us has left even the spirits of the Printer’s devils to sink in to listlcssness. We have nothing to talk j about at home. The cotton illarket is sta-j, tionary. No elections are at hand to quick-;! en our “ gray goose quills”—-for though the < political year of our city draws to a close,, 1 we do not usually enter the lists in the 1 choice of Members of Council, and there is j but one candidate for the Mayoralty before us;J who will, doubtless, unite all suffrages. The President is made. We cannot spec ulate about that election any longer. He has selected his cabinet—and to that,; perhaps “ the least said the sootntet mend-j ed.” Mr. Crawford has not reached home;! Mr. Adams and Mr. Clay were not burnt I in effigy at Brownsville ; Mr. Clinton will | not go to St. James—War is not declared) w ith Spain ; the pirates convicted at Savan nah are not hanged (proh pudor !) ; Mr. Powell dues not oppose Gov. Troup, and in short there is not any thing at home to rouse our scribbling faculties this week.—- Foreign news is equally scarce—-and the winding up of the whole matter is, our read ers will not find any thing very interesting in this day’s paper. Since Darien Bank Notes were thrown uut of our Banks there has been considerable fluctuation in their value. Last week they were at 7 1-2 per cent, discount, and gome were sold as low as 12 1-2. Now, huwev; er, they are mending a little. They are al most current money again ; and some of the “knowing ones,” think they will goon be bankable. We shall see. I-—— II II ,■—«*' The Washington City Gazette seeing re solved to be zealous for somebody. As Mr. Crawford has been unfortunately left in the minority, his quondam supporter is resolved to bite the heels of his successful rival--- and now finds that General Jackson lias been most wofully abused, and Mr. Adams and Mr. Clay are no better than they should be. Zeal is a very good thing in its place—-but, to be useful, must be tempered with calm ness and candour. It appears that Mr. Giles has avowed himself the author of the strictures on Mr. Monroe, published in the Richmond En quirer. The Ex-President has replied, in his own vindication ; but his answer has not reached us. We hope his explanation may be satisfactory. About a twelvemonth since, several de predations were committed upon the way mail route between Philadelphia and Balti more.—Letters from Chester state, that William Barton, aw apprentice to the then postmaster, has acknowledged that he com mitted those depredations, and five hundred dollars have been recovered from him, which are put into the hands of VV. Anderson, H. Myers, and E. Darlington, three respectable citizens ot Chester to be returned to the rightful owner. The young man has made his escape. [Philadelphia paper. By the South-Carolma from St. Croix we have information, that the inhabitants ot St. Thomas were in a continual state ofalarm the town being daily threatened witli fire. Capt. Cartwright passed die island on die 6th inst. and it was still enveloped in smoke from the recent conflagration. [A. K Cour. 20 th inst. ••^o6 The Hon. Willi vm Hull, (General,) of Newton, has been nominated in the Centinel as a candidate for the Senate from Middle sex, should there be a vacancy. The Con vention will be held at Concord to-morrow. -00&- Plie Nashville Gazette, of the 25th ult. announced, in all form, General Jackson as a candidate for the office of President of the United States, to commence on the 4 h of March, 182 -9. Ibis is a living leap over the great chapter of events. Four years in these even ful times! How many passions will subside ; how many voices be bushed ; how many echoes fade ;* how many new interests, attachments, topics spring up, 1 to stitie, us it were, any President in petto! i [cVah Gui i The Hon. Mr. Stan! ey, one of the three e members of the British Parliament who ar- 1 rived in this country last season, sailed from s New-York for England on the 17th inst. in one of the Liverpool packets. These gen tlemen (says the New-York Statesman) have, we believe, travelled over nearly the S whole extent of the U. S. & Canada, & have, at all times, exhibited the temper, feelings, and modest deportment of gentlemen of cultivated minds, anxious to acquire accurate h information of our country, its resources, and d institutions, and of the manners and customs : of the people, and they have on all occasions, received the friendly and polite attentions of our citizens with a correspondent spirit. Lieutenant Pearson, Midshipman Win gerd, and fifteen seamen, of the United States barge Diableta, manned from the John AdamSj which was wrecked upon the island of Santa Boza, on the. 19th ult. whilst cruiz- | ing for pirates, have arrived at Pensacola. [Sav. Georgian, r 1 Cotton Goods. —The following table ex hibits the amount of cotton goods in square yards, exported from Liverpool within the J last four years—hy which it appears that the export to South America has been almost ■ trebled in that period, and in the year 1824, 1 nearly one third of all the cotton goods ex-j-, I ported from Liverpool, have been to tliatj i country—this increase of trade will in some , measure account for the determination of the ‘ British government to recognize the inde pendence of South America. jV. A reward of SIOOO has been offered by the Selectmen for such information as will lead to the con viction of the inhuman author of its publica tion. [C/t«s. City Gaz. Philadelphia, March 19. West Point Military Academy. —At the examination in June last, the number of Ca dets from each state at West Point, was found to be as follows being nearly in propor tion lo the number of members in Congress from each State, viz : From Maine 7, New- Hampshire 7,Massachusetts 15, Rhode-Isl and .2,.Connecticut 6, Vermont £, New-Ym k 35, New Jersey 7, Pennsylvania, 29, Dela ware 2, Maryland 10, Virginia 24, North- Caroliua 13, South-Carolina 12, Georgia 8, Kentucky 14, Tennessee 11, Ohio 12, Louis iana 4. Bakewell, Page & Bakewell, of Pitts burg. It consists of cut glass tumblers, in the bottom of each of which, by a very in genious process is embedded an excellent tiki ness of some distinguished American citizen, as Adams, Jackson, Lafvyette, &c. Tae likeness is formed of a composi tion having the appearance of silver, and al though presented in bold relief, every part ofit is enclosed in the solid glass, and ic consequently indellible.— Ball. Pat. TRIAL FOR MURDER. ' Charles Bill was lately tried at Mlddle bury, Vt. for the murder of his father. A deal of evidence was adduced to prove the insanity of the murderer, at the time the i horrid deed was perpetrated. The trial last ed two days, and the jury after being ab sent about three hours, returned with a 1 verdict of manslaughter, and the prisoner! was sentenced to the State Prison during! life. The trial occupies nine columns of the) Middlebury paper, and after reading the' whole of the evidence as reported, we are surprised to learn that the jury did not find ! the prisoner guilty of murder. VV hen ask- j ed by one of the witnesses if he did not re gret the act he had committed, he answered |“ no, he would not give a shilling, or turn ) over a straw to have it otherwise.” He said, “ as for going to the State Prison, he did not care, but as for being hung up for a specta-i cle for the people io look at, he would make If his bed in hell first; he would put a knife ’ into his heart.” The deceased was an offi cer in the war of the revolution and at the < time of Ids death received a pension from the U.
