FROM THE NATIONAL -SGIS. Small homes preferable to large ones. — The practice which Farmers have unadvised ly fallen into of late, in building too large houses, besides impoverishing them, is at variance with correct taste.—To sit down and count the cost of construction is enjoin ed by Scripture and the dictate of prudence. There is nothing connected with a farm, considered either as an object of taste or e- 1 conomy, that is more pleasing or delightful than a small house. We would not be un derstood by this that it should bo contracted in its dimensions. The practice now is to erect buildings of an extent much beyond what the slender means they possess will justify. The wish to be thought of more importance than we really are, and the no tion that this importance will be estimated from the spacious mansions in which we may reside, is too prevalent among every das of society ; but in no one is the consequence more prejudicial, or its influence more deep J.V l®lt, than in the agricultural community. There are few dwelling houses in the coun try two stories in height; which do not con tain at least two rooms, that seldom, if ever, are appropriated to any other use than the solemnisation id a marriage or the obsequies ol the dead. The expense incurred in the construction of this useful appendage, and the subsequent increase in providing furni ture are considerations which seem to be improperly weighed, Socrates once obser ved on being found in a building of the di- which we would recommend, that with g mil friends, his chance for enjoymen t and happiness was greater under such cir cumstances, than it any wise could be with out them in a house however large and spa cious; intimating thereby that the small ex pense he ha.l incurred in providing him a shelter, the better enabled him to treat with acceptable hospitality, a numerous and in teresting circle of instructive and devoted companions. Could the wise example of Socrates have been followed by many jvim have built too large, instead ot now finding them in dwel lings so disproportionate to the number of taeir family, as well as the amount of their property, without paint, without shade-trees, with the windows broken, and hats and raws, those unfailing signals of misery and wretch edness, in their place, we should have seen them encircled by many sincere friends, with a competency of his world’s goods to snake life comfortable, imparting joy and .content to a virtuous and happy family.
