FROM MILLEDGEVILLE Collected from the Correspondence of[ the Savannah Georgian. r.rlj heals .till continue tube felt Ml letlgeotllo !-■•A strong proof of ,t„. high excitement of the moment, was ..i V en 1 in the meeting of yesterday, in an attempt I to mortify (he feelings of the Executive.--- Mr. Cuthbert, a trustee, having vacated his seat, in the opinion of the trustees, by ab sence from two stated meetings, in eoit.pli-1 ance with the law for the government of (hel College, Ins place was supplied by the I Trustees by the election of Governor Troup. Mr. Cuthbert presented a memori al against (be vacation of his seat, and in the course ot the debate it became evident ' 1 that the object ol its supporters was not to] icstoic Mi. C. but n dismiss Governor T.| The discussion was warm for a time, but' on a motion to approve ol the election ofi Governor Troup to supply ihe vacancy of Mr. Cuthbert, (required 'from the Senate) and to take the yeas and navs, the opposi tion gradually shrunk awav.and on the final question but a few <• still miall voices” said “nay.” ami the memorialist had leave, to withdraw his memorial. Mr. Crawford, who was present as a I’rnstee, appeared to take a great interest in the discussion. Mr. Burnside, has proposed to enquire into the expediency of removing the Darien 1 Bank to Augusta. It has also been proposed to remove the! seat of Government to Macon--to repeal: so much ol the penal Code as relates to ini-; prisonment in (lie Penitentiary—to divide| the state into seven Congressional Districts,! and to establish a lurnpike Road from Au gusta to Athens and from Augusta to Mil leclgeville. Mr. Polhill, presented the following Pre amble and Resolutions which were adopted without a dissenting voice. “ Whereas, in the heat and effervescence ot parly leelings and political disquisitions, the character and standing ot two ot our most worthy and distinguished fellow-citi zens, lately appointed by the General Gov ernment to ncgociatea treaty with the Creek) nation ot Indians, for the extinguishment ot the Indian Li tic to lands within the lim its ot the State of Georgia, have been im properly aspersed, and (heir uprightness and integrity called into question : and whereas, great benefits have resulted to the good citizens of (his staleby the exertions of our fellow-citizens aforesaid, in obtaining for the state ol Georgia an extensive, fertile and important territory, within the limits thereof. “ Resolved unanimously, therefore, by the Senate and House ol Representatives of the Slate of Georgia, in general assembly, met, That they leel deeply and gratefully impres , sod with die important services of the Mono cable Duncan G. Campbell and James Mer ri wether, in obtaining the late cession of lands from the Creek nation of Indians ; and that their confidence remains unimpaired in toe honor, uprightness and integrity of those gentlemen. “ Resolved further, That the General As sembly, representing the feelings and wishes ot the good citizens ol this state, do not hesi tate in saying, that (hey conceive that the Treaty contains itself intrinsic evidence of its own fairness in (lie liberal and extended provisions which it contains for the removal, preservation and perpetuity of the Creek nation—such treaty so beneficial to the Uni ted States, the State of Georgia and the In dians themselves, having been negociated under circumstances requiring the most de voted zeal and persevering industry and firmness, we pronounce upon the conduct of (he Commissioners our most cordial appro bation ; and that a copy thereof be transmit ted to each of said Commissioners, and also a copy to each of our Senators and Repre sentatives in Congress.” In the Senate the ollovving Resolution was offered by Mr. Cleveland : Resolved. That the Joint Committee on the State of the Republic, be requested to take under their consideration, the necessi ty of introducing such memorial as they in their judgment deem proper, to our Sena tors and Representatives iu Congress, and the proper departments of the General Gov ernment, to carry into effect the late treaty held and signed by the United States Com missioners and the Mead Men and Warriors ol (he Creek Nation, on the 12th Feb. 1824.
