CUL 1 URE 01 SILK.
In November, 1823. 1 procured from
Baltimore, a package of Silk Worm Eggs,
which I kept until tbe 2(fib April, 1820,
when 1 brought them out to hatch. On the
22,1 a (ew y»,ung worms made their appeal*j
ance.but in consequence of the seven: frosts
on the 2G»li and 2nh, they did not all hatch
until the 2d May. The first ten days 1 led
them on the black mulberry leaves, then
commenced will, the leaves of the while;
kind, which they were bind of, and nevour- j
ed eagerly ; from the scarcity of these leaves,
.and the almost constant rains during the J
month of May. I found some, difficulty in
procuring a full sum ly-—however, I gene,
rally succeeded. The worms seemed to
thrive well, exc. pt in one instance, when
the whole brood appeared languid, and ate
very little ; this i am certain arose from
giving them a small feed of wet leaves, i
immediately removed them a I to a dry
place, and fed them sparingly for two days,
when they nearly ul’ recovered. I lost a
bout fifty. 1 am certain there ir, nothing
more required in keeping hi'K \ oims to
advantage, but to kuep them clean mid not
too much crowded, and regularly fed on
dean dry leaves---! am fully persuaded
where that is done the worms will thrive
well and no disease appear among them.
Those Worms which were hatched on the
22c! April, began to spin on the 2lst May,
Mid in forty days from the time the
were brought out to hatch, the Worms had
nil gone to spinning - in three days from the
(he last one disappeared, I gatln-ivd the co
coons which lacked a few of SI)DU; they
weighed something over 12 pounds, besides
about 13 ounces of (1 >ss.
I took 3 ounces of cocoon*, an i reeled
them, they produced i ox. of beautiful silk,
in strength and appearan.ee superior to the
best Italian.
1 am (oily satisfied from the result ol my
exparimen*, that the United States, particu
larly the Carolina*, are in every respect
suited to (he culture of Silk to utiy extent,
and it might soon become an immense source
of wealth, especially to those who are in in
digent circumstances, as children, and (he
old and infirm might all be profitably cm
ployed in it.
1 have about 150.000 Silk Worm Eggs,
which I will dispose "I on liberal ternu to
those who wish to make cxpei im-Mtt*.

My parents were poor, and they put me

wife, and a good winking woman she was.
We took a farm of forty acres on rent. By

In tvA» years after, my second daughter
