AUGUSTA:
FlllhW MAY 7, 1830.
John- Kirkpitiu t, Esq was on Monday last
elected a Member of Council for the Lower Ward.
So many Houses are in transitu —that is to say
oeing moved, in our pity— ami so many new build
ings erected anil going up —that the visitor of the
next winter will scarcely be able to recognize bis
old acquaintance on the banks of the Savannah.
We ate informed that although the season is ad
vancing, much anxiety to secure stores and dwell
j mgs continues to be evinced, and not long since aJ
gentleman offered a considerable sum for the renlj
of a Mouse on its way down our principal street. 1
As he desired, however, to stop the progress of the
building and to lake it where it was, his offer could
not he accepted.
The first of May was celebrated in Savannah by
the parade of the Volunteer Companies, and salutes
fired in honor of the day, We believe there was a
time when St. Tammany had his votaries in Augus
ta—and we know not why it is that the Tutelar
Saint of our country has of late years been neglect
ed and his festival forgotten. St. Andrew and St.
Patrick are every year remembered, and duehon-l
ors are also paid to the Pilgrim Fathers. This is as
it should be—and we hope the brethren of Tamma
ny will be found on the first day of the month
of Flowers in the coming year, assembled in the
great wigwam smoaking the calamut of peace and
brightening the chain of friendship.
The Mirth day of Washinotos was celebrated at
Home, on th»- 22d February last, by filly Americans, j
There is something affecting and grand in thus
echoing the name of Washington amidst the ruins
of the eternal city. Could (he Cresar’s have fore
seen the moment when the fame of this great pa
triot was to occupy the theatre of their glory
brightening in the contrast with their ambition—
they had not for themselves divine lienors nor co
veted immortality. Washington’s name and exam
ple at Home, constitute a lesson which even heroes
and sages cannot study without edification, interest
and emotion.
It is said that General Root refuses to he planted
in the Governor ’» Garden in New-York,
Tuskinu has been held to Bail to answer to the
charge of slopping the mail. How shocking ! On
ly think dear sensitive ladies and philanthropic gen
tlemen—friends of the poor Indians ! Tuskina
who stood upon his own soil—within the limits of
his own nation, and frightened poor Herr Cuts*
and the Stage Driver, is to be brought before a Tri
Initial of the United States and fried under United
States Law, for a little piece of mischief, doubtless
allowed by the laws of his realm, and which wrought
serious injury to nobody ! What a violation of the
rights of the Indians is here— surley never was in
dependent and sovereign nation so insulted before !
We find the following communication in (he Sa
vannah Republican. It may prove of some ser
vice to Travellers :
“ A friend informs ns, that he has lately seen a
gentleman, who travelled with his family to Flori a
and back again to this city, by what may be called
♦he middle route. For the information of travel
iers, he states, the journey out was performed in a
light carriage and pair, with great ease in eight days.
The rate of travelling did not exceed 3.1 to 34
miles a day. The route was through Effingham,
Tattnall, Telfair, Irwin and Lowndes counties, to.
Monticello, Jefferson county, Middle Florida. In
Telfair he fell into the Coffee road, the route lying
through a high pine barren country, affords level
and dry roads. Indeed, for the little labor which
has been bestowed upon them, they are in an un
commonly good state. Like the Indian trails, up
> on which many of the roads have been formed, they '
follow the indications of the trees and have gene- j
rally only the inequalities of roots. There are no
taverns on this route, but the housekeepers all en
tertain travellers. The accommodations are res
pectable, and the farmers kind and attentive to
their guests and moderate in their charges The 1
establishment of a mail by this route would facili- ’
tate travelling very much, and in a stage with its re
lays, the journey could be performed in four or five :
days.” |

Portrait of Don Miguel drawn by Me. I/uslcnl
son.—-He looked with astonishment at the charac
ter of Don Miguel. It wan amazing that so voting
a man could have accomplished so much wicked
ness in so short a time ; for, at the early age of six-
Jand-twenty, this man—this Don Miguel— had per
| petrated every crime, and displayed every vice,
■ which historical truth or historical fiction had attri
buted to the most sanguinary monsters that ever
waded through the blood of innocent people in
pursuit of their ambitious objects. It was to be

We are informed by Captain Beekman, from;
Carlhagena, that news had been received the day
he sailed, that the Commissioners sent by Bolivar 1
to Gen. Paez, had returned without being able to
obtain a hearing. Bolivar was collecting troops in
Grenada, and it was expected an open rupture
would shortly take place between them. Business
was extremely dull, and the country in a very un
( settled stale.
Captain Hayes, who came up this morning from
the brig Rose, arrived below, reports that he was
fired into with muskets by the United Slates Reve

I The “Constitution,” according to Mr. Hnskisson,
m the late debates, is a machine. According to
Lord John Russell, it is a Gothic building: not a
Grecian Temple. Sir George Murray admits that
it is so, and likes it the belter for being Gothic. The
Constitution used formerly to be the “wonder oftlie
world j” but whether as temple, castle, or machine,
was not in those days specified by its admirers.
