We are informed that England. France,
and Prussia, the nearest Powers to Begium, i
are going to hold a Congress, at wnich they!
will form certain conditions for the pacifi
cation of Holland and Belgium. The con
ditions will be presented to the Provisional i
Government at B-ussels for their compli-l
nnce within a certain time, limited by three'
Powers. At the expiration of that period,.
should the Belgium nut cnmjdy, the Prus
sian troops will immediately march into
Belgium. The above is said to have been
agreed to yesterday by Prince Talleyrand.
We cannot help expressing great doubt of
'he correctness of the above.
The situation of Ireland continues to be 1
the subject of general conversation. Many
reports are in circulation, and many con
jectures are h .z-mlvtl concerning the re
sults of this situation. The general opin
ion is, that measures will be adopted to re
press the sentiments which predominate in
that country ; and that tranquility will be I
restored. [Courier.
We regret to learn that the Duke of Wel-I
lington, on his return from the House of)
Lords on Tuesday, was assailed by a mob
ot ignorant and misguided persons with >
marks of popular indignation, too unequivo-l
cal to be misunderstood. All this is in the,
highest degree disgraceful. [Herald.

Stage Trick. —At the Theatre, on Thurs
day evening, one of the horses now “ star
ring” it on die Boston boards, being engag
ed in tfie combit at tho dose nt the ”*1 „.el
Mine,’ - took offence at the burning bridge,
and seemed disposed considerably “to o’er
step the modesty of nature.” His tiJor
endeavored to make him face die supposed
danger, but the animal not having his “cue,”
backed slowly towards the verge of the
stage. The musicians in the orchestra were
hard at it, to swell the fury of the combat;
but Mr. Comer, the leader, executed with
his violin bow, upon the breech of the ani
mal, a movement which a musical amateur
termed “ expressly obligato,” The other
musicians performed a “ fugue” in a mas
terly style. Mr. Cear succeeding in saving
his great double bass. Comer did not qua
his post (ill the animal stepped upon die
toot lights, when he retreated. The horse
finally backed into the orchestra, his rider
flying off la a iaogcnt, aim wuiui was the
wreck which the animal made of music
books, stands, instruments, el cetera, by his
fall ; after which, he rose, and stood quiet
ly champing his bits, probably disposed to
put all the blame upon the prompter, A
wag observed that he was decidedly the
greatest performer that ever exhibited his
powers in the orchestra ; to which ano her
replied, “yes, he would undoubtedly draw
a greater fiddle bow, than even Comer I im
self.” Tost on Fat.
An Awkward Mistake. —A mistake of
rather an awkward description occurred a
few evenings ago to a couple of youthful
lovers, residing not far from Chelmsford.
The unfortunate swain, it appears had in
curred the displeasure of his mistress’s fa
ther who forbade him to enter the house, and
laid strict injunction on his daughter not to
pass the threshold, without leave. This
she obeyed to the letter, but hit upon an
expedient to gratify her lover also, by break
ing a square of glass in the pantry wind iw,
through which many
“ A long, long kiss—a kiss of youth and
love,”
had been given. Three times had (he
square been replaced, and four times had
it been broken ; when Miss attributing it to
the cats, her father concealed himself in the
place in order to watch. About ten o’clock,
the lover appeared, with a ‘slow and cau
tious step,’ which the master hearing, put
his face to the aparture to ascertain who
was coming at that‘unhallowed hour,’and
tho swam laiffakir g U for ‘ his soul’s sofi
i him with the ‘heart’s to
ken.’ Thr whiskered face made him start
'By heaven !’ thought he ‘it is not you—it
is somebody eUe,’ and soon the direful truth
flashed upon him in the shape of the sturdy
farmer and an old musket.--A parley now,
ensued, ami the mistaken swain agreeing!
to pay the glaziet’s bill ':•% was allowed to’
depart.

| FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1830.
To-mourqw being New-Y ears day, we tender
our best wishes for their happiness to our Patrons
and Friend?.
We have great pleasure in informing the public
of die re-election of J > stss P. Wad nut, tn the Rector-
ship of the Richmond Academy for the ensuing year. |
Mr. Wis an amiable man—an experienced Teacher,
and accomplished Scholar. The Rev. Seueso Tat- 1
lor takes charge of the English Department, and is j
to boassisted by Mr. Nathaniel Charles, who also.
| teaches the Modern Languages. The condition of
the Academy is now very flourishing, and we learn;
that the system of Instruction lias recently under
gone great improvements.
We observe that the Hon. R H. Wm..,, lias ta
ken his seat in Congress, We are sorry that he
has laboured under serious indisposition and has
|not yet entirely recovered from it. We believe all
!our members are at their posts, Gen. Thompson!
occupies the station of Chairman of the Committee
lon the Militia. The trial of Judge Peck is going
on at Washington and very little else is doing. I
Mr. M'Dufhc has proposed to amend the Constitu-i
tion by making the President ineligible a second 1
j I ime to office.
j Ws noticed some days since the intention of Mr.
and Mrs. Tkiiss, to open a School for young Ladies
in this city. We are informed their plan of In-|
straction is of the most comprehensive kind, includ
ing Mathematicks, Natural aril, moral Philosophy,
I Languages, Music and Belles Letters. They ex
pect able assistants in some of these branches, and
of their own competency to perform the task they
have undertaken, there can he no doubt. They are
well known »s the talented and assiduous Instruc
-1 tors of the Sparta Female Academy.
The College Library will soon be replaced, by a
Library purchased by Or Church, and which is
said to be more valuable than that unfortunately
destroyed by fire.
Tire Athenian lately rejoiced at the success the
College met with at Milledgeville, but its gratifica
tion seems much to have abated, in consequence of
.ythe amendment offered by Mr. Blair of Habersham
jto the College Bill, ami with which it passed, viz : I
And be it farther enacted , That it shall be the du- 1
ly of justices of the Interior Court of each county
in the State, immediately after lire passage of this
| act, to select from among the poor ot their county,
one young man, who shall be between the ages of
fifteen and eighteen years, whose duty it shall be, i
Ito notify the Board of Trustees, of said selection ;
and it shall be the duly of said Board, to cause
each applicant so reported, to be boarded and edit
cated at Franklin College, out of the funds herein
after mentioned, free of any other charge.
The Athenian thinks the amendment defeat" <*n
lively the objects of the bill. Wo think so 100.
The appropriation made by the Legislature was too
meagre in itself, it becomes worse than nothing;
when saddled with the extraordinary expense of
supporting and educating seventy nine poor young
men. We shall see how the College Union party
will get along with this difficulty. We regret ex
ceedingly the situation of Franklin College and
wish it cotrtd be restored to the situation it occupied
when the venerable Dr. Waddel left it.
George Tassels. —The execution of this unfor
tunate Indian took place on the 241 h hist A large
number of persons were assembled on the occa
sion, among whom were some eighteen or twenty
Indians. We understand that on the day previous!
to the adjournment of the legislature, the Cover-1
nor received an order from Chief Justice Marshall
to defer the execution oil the case could be tried!
before he U. S Supreme Court. He immediately
laid the order before the legislature, who sent an
express to (he Sheriff of Hall county, to proceed
in the execution. No notice from the U. S. Court
was served either on Judge Clayton or the Sheriff.
This collision of authorities portends something se
rious. What its effect will be it is impossible to
predict with any degree of certainly—perhaps His
Honor, Judge Marshall, may think it incumbent on
him to arraign and punish (if perchance he should
possess the power,) the State of Georgia for con
tempt of the Federal Court.— Athenian ,
It will be seen by the foregoing that the unhap
• py violator of our laws is no more.—While we re
gret his guilt and deem his punisfitnent just, we
cannot help smiling at the Citation from the Chief
Justice and the incidents attending it. It came
through the Post Office— and it does not appear
from the above, that a Writ of Error had been filed
with the Clerk of Hall county, for had it been so
filed, Judge Clayton and the Sheriff of the county
would most probably have heard or known of it.
Is not the whole a Hoax ? A Christmas Rocket
thrown by some wag at Richmond into the State
House for die purpose of looming the Legislature
and the Governor > Hut if the Citation be genu
ine—the Plaintiff in Error is dead—and we should
! like to know how the Chief Justice will make par
-1 ties to his suit in error. We cannot bring ourselves
at this moment to treat this subject seriously—we
fear it has been treated too seriously already. If it
be an imposition it is a very wicked one—but yet
how great will be the ckud.le of the party quizzing
when he hears of the rumpus he has occasioned.
Both parties are claiming the two new Senators
|from Missouri and Pennsylvania. It Is highly pro
bable however that they will support the Admin
istration,
There is to be a great Clay National Convention
at Washington. The Telegraph says very pro :
I erly
“ What good is to be derived from the call of a
i convention, pledged to nominate a particular in
! dividual }”
We find the following in the paper from which
!we have already quoted -we adopt the sentiment
: (heartily, provided War. U. CnA\vronr> < r some other
distinguished Georgian, shall not be liv’d upon by
the Republican Parly in the United Sta 's, ami sup
ported for that office.
