It Judge j Clayton bo inconsistent, are not tlie Clark party in- ( consistent also—do they not note revile him whose p name hut a little month ago they rolled as a sweet , morsel under their tongue ! j rhere arc always two sides to every story, and v "hear the other purl’ 1 is one of the soundest maxims t of morality and law. Why when Justice gives his ac f count of the affair, does he not tell us what Judge Clayton says about i> i —he evidently knows; for he I: informs us that the Judge hos Written explanatory * fellers, and he has hem in possession of one oj them from which he copies but a single sentence, lt d the letter end then 7 and if not, why was not the whole f letter given to the public ? j Rot there is a view of this mailer which must forcibly strike all who consider it. Is it nut a mere ly private matter with which the people have noth ing to do—because private disagreements are best & settled between the parties themselves 5 And again, it will he remembered that Judge Clayton is not a ] self nominated candidate, lie i» the selected of his < /m/i parly for services already done, and for other valuable services expected to be performed by him ( hereafter in Congress Wi hope all the antici- ] padons of our Caucus friends' will b« fully re alized ! In what w* have said wo most not be supposed advocates of tergiversation and Inconsistency. II we take the statement of "Justice” for granted -«•« <• bearing judge Clayton’s gtn.y -his explanations perath enlure his just if eat ion • then, , we freely admit, the Judge was wrong— but we deny that he is guihy of apubhe error, or a moral error of such magnitude as to over weigh years of patriotic fideli ty to the ben interests of his country and his parly. I'liere ate specks upon die sun, but we should he held undaout and mad were we on that account, to t. deny light and glory to that great luminary. We do consider it well for the Judge that no greater sin f s» attempted to be cast at his door—and in this changing world and these changing times--consis tency lot it be remembered, is sometimes a virtue more of theory than practice. j We conclude hy objecting to the mode of elec ( tioneoring so common amongst us, and the princi pie of which is— destruction io the opposing Vandi- 1 date. There is now a days no generous rivalry for office—but honors must be won by stepping over! a prostrate antagonist. There is now no race in w hich justice is done alike to him who w ins the goal and him who lags behind-but the fortunes of the successful must be planted owr the ruins of the unsuccessful candidate —or the victory is incomplete and has no charms. For our own part, we will not be governed by principles so unwise and unjust when we advocate the election of a candidate to office it is because we believe him well qualified—l we will not attempt to pull down the reputation of his opponent and foist upon the broken fragments the pretensions of our friend -bu t we would place judge C’s claims full in the public gaze upon their only proper basis—Me merits of the individual rrjp We have just as our paper is going to press, sec t a letter from Judge Cut ro* to a gentleman m this eitv— which puts his several conversations in a very different guise from that in which they are placed by Justice ; hut we have not time to pub lish now—perhaps in a Handbill hereafter. We have had very severe weather for some days oast—first clear and cold, and then rain and sleet byway of change. We have been presented with a Tam, grown in the garden of Wm- Jackson, Esq. of this city. The seed was deposited by Mr. J. in May last, and from two hilts he obtained 16 lbs. of substantial roots, j \y c wonder the cultivation of this line vegetable has not been before attempted.
