CONSTITUTIONALIST. JWOVSTAt FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 1832. Oir Tuesdey tot, Major Guests B- Marshall, ■ "vas elected a Justice of ihc Inferior Court for this Bounty, in place < f Holland M Tyre, E-q resigned. This Dat is the Anniversary of jErrcßsos’-a i .Birth ! ! ! | We liavp observed in several paper, lately, sug . gestions of the same fact, and these suggestions predicated of very different feelings (we are per suaded.) from tln.se which reigned paramount in the heart of that pure patriot. We would not en ter now upon any discussion which might mar the kindly feelings, moat naturally aroused by such a consideration- Let us rather derm it a dav when the flame of that pure KtecßLiCAvisM of which he is hailed, by acclamation, as the Father, should be tanned and kept alive by TUrnnLiCAR unanimi ty Its blaze, for a while past, ha'h been some what flickering and unsteady ; Jytif, as the monarch of -he forett never knows hi" power till he is at tacked by the wild blasts—so may the existing dis satisfaction - serve but as a triumphant test to the indissolubili'y of our sacked c.niox. The following reminds us, very forcibly, of ave ry dear old treid of ours—whose retrospective glances seem be, to him, a source of mingled pleasure and pain. Ten years ago—if any thing met his disapprobation —“lt was not so thirty years ago !” Dear old friend ! He bath added ten years more to his lament—and it is now—"for ty years ago.”! , We claim not to be sexagenarians ourselves, but even we can io..k back well feelings of a somr what similar cast We well lemember a bright April morning, when, aher a long and 'edious Col lege term, we stepped on board of a steam boat, With some forty or fifty of our College companions ; r all was hfe and gaiety—Here was a group with tiutes and chi.ioneis -there another with deeply pondering pleases over a clrss boaid another at draughts -sonti- sauntering —some lounging all in good humor—and. in the major part, the “ vis ten toria” was in full ebullition. Two gentlemen ad vanced in life, were sitting together pleased spec tators, apparently, of the passing scene—We heard one say—" How short a lime it seems—since ! was like one of these lads." We cannot say “forty year* ago," but we can say that we recur with pleasure to that day and that old gentleman—a pleasure alloyed with the reflection that so many of that pay be y of you hs are now “beneath the slod- of the valley. ’? , I But a truce with our egotism —We return to our extract ; —This “ land a! or te.mporis acti se pucro.” Diis ci ijin Forty years ago Literature meant learning ; and wa. 'iippiru-ci l>> rommun sni»e. Refined nonsense had no idvorates, and was pretty yene»ally kicked out of d nr^. Forty years ago— Men ot property could labor and "Wear homespun to church; women spin and weave, make butter and cheese, whose husbands were worth thousands. Forty years ago -There were hot few merchants in the country —few insolvent deo'ors, and they verv rarely imprisoned for debt. Forty years ago The young ladies of the first re spectability le u ued music; but it was the hamming of the wheel, and learned the necessary steps in dancing in following it. Their piano was a toi-ra, the.i- parasol a broom and their novels the Bible. Forty years ago-V he gentlemen hoed corn, chopp, d a od a' Die door ami went to school in the wiiver to lea n reading, writing, ana arithmetic. Forty years ago - There were no such things as balls m the summer, and but few in the winter, ex cep* snow balls forty years ago If a mechanic promised to do your »urk, you might depend on his word; the thing would be done Forty years ago - When a mechanic had finished at* work, he was immediately paid for it. . j PUBLIC MEETING. . 1 Waynesborough, April Bth, 1832. , Mr. BUNGE, Acconiuisa to previous notice, a number of the citizens of Burke county, assem-' bled at Waynesborough on Friday the slb instant, John Whitehead, Esq. having been called to the Chair, and Edward Hughes, appointed Secretary Dr. South worth Harlow, disclosed in a few remarks the object of the meeting, and offered the follow ing resolution, which was adopted ; . I x ' The Jewels of the Princess of Orange.— The ex pedition ol Mr. Ra\ mond in search of the Jewels stolen by Carrara from the Princess of Orange, up-! pears to have been fraught with more difficulty and) danger than has been generally supposed. Mr. Raymond narrowly escaped death in two or three instances. On one occasion he received a sabre cut ■ on the head from a Belgian soldier, which would! have'bc a n followed by another that probably would! have proved fatal, had not an officer who knew him| rusued forward and rescued him. On another oc-l casion, as he wan crossing the frontiers into Holland,! he wa« fired upon twice by the Dutch sentinels, who were ignoratpfliL character tr;J the enterprise in which lie wait engaged j His first journey from (he Hague to Brussels was! fruitless. The description of lire spot where jewel* where buried, given hi try by Carrara’s wife, was so vague that he was obliged 'o return for further in formation. Ou his lecoud visit to Brussels, lie succeeded in making a purchase of the ground where they were said to have been concealed, and had a large shanty erected upon the premises, with a vie w to prevent any discovery of his design, pre tending that his object -in making the purchase was to cultivate the mulberry tree. He then com menced digging, and his efforts were rewarded by the appearance of an iron box, which proved to contain the object of his search j Mr. fta'ympnd ascertained, to his satisfaction, that .the jewels were stolen frem the apartments of the Prince:* by Carrara tmd an accomplice.
