THE THEATRICAL COMTAET Opened to r pretty fair house last night, bat we regretted to see such a meagre attendance of the fairer portion of creation. The ladies can take our word for it, that they run no risk in visiting Ral ston Hall now, under the present management. Strict order was and will hereafter be enforced, and nothing left undone to render the Theatre a place of innocent, rational amusement. The play for the evening was Knowles’ "Hunch back," in which the atrength and merit of the Com pany could not be fully exhibited. With Misa Ellen Wren’s Julia we were very well pleased. Os course she does not rank with Julia Dean in her palmier days, or other bright particu iar stars, but her conception and acting of the character was natural and unaffected. The lady has the germ of a good actress in her, which time aud culture will most surely bring to full fruition. Miss Rose Wood is a piquante and pleasing per former—with a charming face and good figure, and we prediet will become quite a favorite with at the leaat the masculine habitues. We liked her Helen. Sir Thomai Clifford waa well acted by Walter Benn, though we thought be lacked force of ex pression in some of the situations. Mr. Geo. Wren’s Matter Walter we have seen excelled, and we thought was a little too tame— but the personation as a whole, waa well conceived and carried out. The minor characters of the play were credibly performed ; and, on the whole, we consider the Wren Combination by far the best company we hare seen tread the stage of Ralston Hall of late. removal or tmi rosT orrici. This venerable institution, which is of great assistance in the pnblication of a newspaper, though not an absolute necessity—as has been plainly demonstrated in the past three months—was re moved literally “lock stock and" bags yesterday afternoon, from the looation on Second street, to the one lately occupied by Copley, at the corner of the alley en Third street, midway between Cherry and Mulberry. “this cruel war » OVER.” At leaat so thought we when setting down to the well gotten up "spread” at Brown’s Hotel, on the 16th. We found the Colonel presiding in per •on, and assisted by Capt. Brown, superintending the movements of the corps of well drilled waiters* who seemed to vie in their attentions to the num. erous guests. If any man got up dissatisfied with the quantity or quality of his dinner, we prouounce him a bypocondriac, and more fastidious than wise. But we know that no one done so, for they all pre sented pleased countenances at the conclusion of the feast—at least we saw many of them “smiling’’ in the basement, where Lawrence holds forth. Visitorsare greeted on entrance by the familiar face of onr friend Moses, who will be tound ever ready to attend their numerous wants, or to any business connected with the Hotel office. IM THE WRONG PIW. Such, we conelude, was the opinion of the “ night hawks” who broke into the large store of Mr. Huff, under Ralston Hall, on Saturday night last, and found all the articles lying around loose rather bulky for eaay transfer. With the excep tion of a few mackerel and a little flour, nothing was disturbed. It is evident that a visit to Mr. Huff’s premises was not the original intention of the thieves. They paid a visit to the confection ery and variety store, two doors the other side, on Third street, ostensibly for the purchase of some Article, and while there purloined the key from the front door. On closing for the night, the proprietor missed the key, and very sensibly left some one on guard. The cracksmen, on their re turn, finding this to be the case, had to "go far ther and fare worse.” Had they got in either there or at Rasdai’s, they would have made fancy articles and fine liquors squat. As it was, the effect will be to put the merchants in that locality ou the alert. “ PITT THE SORROW’S OP A POOR OLD MSN.” The emotions of commiseration were strongly stirred within the breasts of all who witnessed the sufferings of a poor, lone, age stricken white man, on Sabbath evening last. We were not, ourself, a looker on, but learn the following from a friend : When first seen, on Second street, “just as the shades of night were coming adown the western sky," his tottering steps were being supported by a stalwart negro man—to whom be all honor—and the old man was pleading, with child-like eager, ness, to be allowed to rest his wearied frame. The ear of the negro was not closed to these pathetic pleadings, and, with the fond c&re of a mother, he nroceeded to epread a quilt upon the eanh that (his old, travel-stained pilgiiiu might be tempora nly refreshed for another wearisome tramp in search of hospitable quarters. The tale of the negro to the by-standers was, that he bad ac«.i ientally met the old genilemau ou the arrival o 1 he Columbus train, and feeling sorrow at his emac iated, forlorn appearance, had assumed to guide his tottering steps iu search of a resting place. The negro asserted—but we think the thing scarcely credible—that the old tnan was refused admission into one of our hi tels, although he (thr negro) offered to deposit $6 in ibe hands of the clerk. But not long was the old man suffered to remain npou the bosom of oar universal mother—and in •he cold embraces of whom he will shortly lie— •.he kind heart of one of our prominent citizens •digesting his removal to his residence ; where we know everything was done for his comfort that care and attention could afford. The old man hails from Butler, and we thiuk it a crying shame upon his relatives, if he have any, ;hat he should be allowed to wander from home needy and unattended. But further commentary is unnecessary. “Sich is life and such the fash ion of the world from the beginning. his honor's tribunal. The compulsory attendance at the Mayor’s morn ing levee was not very large yesterday, but even the few penitent sinners who occupied the “mi ions bench” seemed as though they would have been better pleased to have been almost anywhere else than just there. The cases were mostly of a petty character, confined, with one exception, to our colored population ; and that one, in which oho of our otherwise shrewd Cotton Aveuue gro cers was caught selling the “ardent” without a “showing” from the City Clerk. There are so many different taxes aud licenses to pay for peddling whisky, that we are only surpiised that any man should remember to settle one—half of them. Pleading ignorance, the gentleman was only mulct, •and in the sum of S2O and costs. The prevailing mania among the negroes now seems to be gambling, there being no less than three parties up for the offense. It is a great pity then the negro is more prone to imitate the vices rather than the virtues of the white race: Jerry and Lucias, for indulging in a social game of “old sledge” on the Sabbath, enriched the City Treasnary by an involuntary contribution of $15 — the former “anteing” up to the amount of $lO, and the latter to the amount of a V. George, for an infraction of the same ordinance, had an invitation to visit and reside at the City Hotel for the space of 20 days—to be presented with a full set of the corporation jewelry, and la bor for the benefit of the public, to pay for his keeping. His partner in iniquity did not “come up to time,” which will be all the worse for him I*ben he does. Green—as bis name would indicate—was foolish enough to think bs could escape the lynx eyes of the polios, and haul, without first stepping up to the Captain’s office and getting a permit. He paid for his verdancy by handing over $6 and costs. Randall having become affected with the prevail ing cotton fever, was taken in nei for hav ing "cotton on the brain,” but in a bag—which Was produced in damning evidence against him, and was sent to keep conspanv with "blackleg” George for the same space of time—to be similarly ornamented, and to go through the manual of street drill. » ' / f Tat f And the Court then adjourned. “ ' MACO:\ PRICES CURRttWT. We now quote Gold stiff* ly at 45 to 50. In Silver there is not much demand, but it may be quoted at 35 to 45 premium. GENERAL MARKET REPORTS. Cotton Market.—the receipts of cotton by wagons are very light, and prices are decidedly upward. Strict Middling will command readily 87 cents. Quotations might be made from 27 to 37 cents—low grades hang heavily, aud re-packed is dull of sale. It is apparent now to everybody that the amoUDtof cotton in the country i8 even much less than was thought at the close of the war. The facilities for shipping cotton from Atlanta makes it one of the bast points for selling cot ton now in the State, and large cotton operations are made here, while the article is lying at other points oo the railroads leading to this place. Messrs. McDaniel A Strong alone have bought over 400 bales thi. Seek We advise parties having cotton for sale to give this market their attention. — Atlanta Intelligencer, 14fA. If the mer were navigable to this point, many stores that are now nearly empty, would De filled, large quantities of goods for this market be ing now at fcufaula awuiting navigation. To our Colored Correspondent. —An intelli gent negro, who writew a very fair hand aud spells beautifully, has sent a savage communication charging that we never pay any attention to “the cause of justice und right to the negro.” This iH an utter mis take. We feel the greatest interest in the “unbleached domestic.” We lovethe very kink in his hair, and, provided he uses pro fusely “Phalon’s Night-blooming Cereus,” we do not object to his contiguity in hot weather. Have we nofjoined with the Bisb ops, the preachers, the a- aeons, and other good people in advocating their education| elevation and refinement ? Ha e we no t pointed out to them the advantages of ens igration to Liberia, a country where they can get plenty of yam, plantain, and run,p and where the climate is so delightful that a coffee bag with three holes in it will do for a suit of clothing all the year round ? It is an entire mistake; we are interested in the freedrnen. Have we not warned them against buying galvanized pewter watches manufactured in Boston ? And did we not but the other day call the at tention of their friend, the New York Tri bune, to a horrible outrage committed Ul - on one of the race, an old man, and a preacher of the gospel, who was sent to the penitentiary in Te. lessee for receiving, knowingly, stolen bacon ? Nevertheless, with an ingratitude scarcely paralleled in history, they give their subscription to some other paper —some Radical organ. This is unfair—it is not just nor right. We treat the freedrnen with politeness, as we have always treated tihe colored race.- When they are respectable, honest and in dustrious, we give them their dues aad re-* 1 spect them accordingly.— Richmond Timet. of that territory, to secure wives for the dis consolate bachelors residing there, and all expect to greatly improve their condition when they reach their destination.
