St. Louis and the Southern .Trade*
Bt Louis, the central city of the Unitec
States, baa been, daring the four years ol
gloomy civil war, bound, like the giant ,
Prometheus, to its rock shore, by trade
restrictions. The jealousy of other great
cities, even of the J upiter city-—New York
—has been preying upon the vitals of its
prosperity like a vulture, tapping and de
vouring the life blood of its trade at the
sources of the Mississippi Valley, and even
along the Hannibal and St. Joseph road,
near its heart; but, thanks to Herculean
Providence, St. Louis is now free—a
Prometheus unbound. The fiery impulse,
energy and intelligence of its merchants
are now not only regaining the lost re
sources of the Northwest, hut, what is more
glorious, they are extending their business
conquests Urough the heart of Tennessee,
even to toe confines of the far off* South
east, so that ths Carolinas, Georgia and
Alabama are thia day offering liberal
tributes to the commercial supremacy of
St Louis. « M
Thousands and tens of thousands of
prudent peoplo in the rural districts of the
Southwestern portion of the United States
have saved their little bags of gold slid
silver, and numerous bales of cotton, which
they are anxious to send to St Louis for
food and fabrics of eveiy kind that St.
Louis can supply—breadstufis and pro
visions, dry goods and groceries, house
hold and kitchen furniture, agricultural
and mechanical utensils; and assurance is
given by a highly intelligent and honorable
gentleman, who spent last summer here,
that a strong current of feeling is prevail
ing throughout the Southwest in favor of
the St Louis trade.
Nashville was the point from which the
army of the Great W cat overpowered the
Southeast, even to Savannah, to Charles
ton, and to the centre of North Carolina;
and Nashville is the gateway through
which the counties of the West must flow
to reinvigorato the same country.
Louisville, Cincinnatti, and even Chicago,
are striving for the largest share in the
millions of business with the Southeast;
but St. Louis, by a bold and dashing move
ment, has gained a position that commands
success.
A packet company is already establish
ed between St. Louis and Johnsonville,
running daily in connection with the Nash
ville and Northwestern railroad and trans
porting passengers and freight to and from
St. Louis and Nashville, in forty hours.
By the railroads running South, Southeast
and East of Nashville, the freight is speed
ily sent, without breaking balk, to Alabama,
Georgia, East Tennessee, and the Caro
linas, and especially to Atlanta, Macon and
Augusta, Georgia. Three boats are also
running in connection with this paoket
company from Johnsonville to Easiport,
Mississippi.
Throughout this whole region, from
Mississippi to the Carolinas, numerous
mercantile agents will soon be engaged in
reaping the harvest of business now spring
ing up to reward this sagacious and gigan
tic enterprise, which if vigorously and
liberally controlled, will augment the
wealth, the power and the glory .of Bt
Louis. Lxgion.

yet displayed in this city. My Stock will consist not
only of my own purchases, but large selections from
purchases made by Mr. J. B. Ross, at the recent auc
tion sales in New York, which 1 know to be at foes
prices than others have paid in the same market. By
an arrangement with Messrs. J. B. Roes A Ron, their
ENTIRE RETAIL BUSINESS will be transferred to
me; and with the advantages afforded. 1 shall at all
times be prepared with the most comprehensive assort
ment in this city. Especial attention has been given
to the acclection of
JftOVRJTMJfG GOODS;
and also to the selection of LINEN GOODS, of every
description, which are now decidedly cheaper and
more economical than Cotton fabrics.
So come along, laities, and give me a trial. I have
served many of you in the past and given yon good
bargains, and will continue to do so if you will stick
to me; and if I have neglected to provide anything
which can add to your comfort or convenience, I wul
furnish it on short notice.
