Smp Afkmd Cotton MM.— The New York San ray* the immense business do ing in the New England Cotton Mills is shown by the fact that several of them have lately sent agents to England for at ditional operatives, having found it impos sible to procure enough in this country to meet the demand. The Boston papers ' announce that one vessel has already ar f rived «t that port with over two hundred > cotton operatives on board, who have been sent hither from Lancashire, England, by agr-nts of the mills. Other vessels are ex pected to arrive soon, with a much larger number of hands. Every cotton mill in the New England States is now reported to be running to the full extent of its ca pacity, and in many of them the hands are working from sixteen to eighteen hours out of the twenty-four, receiving extra wages for overwork. It is said that the mills are now making over one hundrei per cent proßt, which is occasioned by the late heavy advance in prices. They are all overwhelmed with orders, and having now no difficulty in obtaining cotton, they are enjqying a rich harvest. It cannot be expected, however, that this condition of things will long continue. The present heavy demand from the South and West will soon be supplied, after which a stock will accumulate, prices will come down, and the disposition to strain every mill to its utmost producing capacity will natural ly subside. A Mmmie Appeal /ram South Carolina. — The Masons of the North are about to re ceive a distinguished committee from the capital of South Carolina. The Masonic fraternity of Columbia has ehosen brothers William Gilmore Simms and Robert Bruno as Commissioners to represent to their Northern brethren the distressed and pros trated condition of the Masonic Lodges in Columbia, where they were once so numer ous, strong, powerful and active. The working implements of the Order have nearly all been destroyed by the ruthless hands of war, and the Lodges, generally, are in a most helpless condition. The brotherhood in the Northern States, it is hoped will extend the hand of welcome to these two eminent members of the frater n ty. They will take their departure for the oity of New ork in the steamer on Thursday. jCSTGcneral Ortega, Vice President of Mexico, has been arrested in New York, at the suit of Colonel Wm. H. Allen, who asserts that he acted as superintendent of the recent Mexican immigration movement, under the authorization of Gen. Ortega, and that, in such capacity, he incurred debts amounting to $7,000, which the Genera! now refuses to pay. Geo.
