The Weather. — Yesterday morning
was (dear, bright and pleasant, but to
ward evening, scattering clouds were' be
ginning to gather, and it was turning con
siderably colder.
A Riddle. —Itisono easily solved, by
calling at the picturc-galleay over Board
man’s Book Store. If you give him one
call, examine his specimens, and find, out
bis knowledge of the photographic art,
you will not be surprised at the superiority
of his pictures. His porcelain pictures,
also, are unsurpassed.
If you wish an artistic Carte de Vis
ile, Porcelain picture or Ambrotype, goto
Lunquest’s, next to F. J. Johnson & Cos.
Fink Arts.—The superiority of the Cart
de Visite produced at Pugh’s Premium
Gallery are admitted by all who have ex
amined them.
Pugh is now prepared to receive orders
for the Pore dinn pictures or ivory types.
'Fills style of pictures is now becoming
quite popular. tt
(<’ixk Sugars. —We are indebted to
Messrs. Longley <fc Walsh, Auction and
Commission Merchants, tor a box ol very
line Segars, of which they have quite a
quantity on sale—very cheap. We can re
commend them (the Segars,) ns also
Messrs. Longley & Wab-b, to those ip
want, of good articles.
Du.J. A. Clopton. —This eminent phy
sician arrived in our city yesterday, and
is stopping atthe Lanier House. 1 Lis treat
ment of piles, fistulas, etc., is given up to
be the most successful in the world. H«
has never been known to lose a pataient,
or meet with any mishap in their treat
ment. He may he consulted for the next
ten days.
Another Broke Nigger.—Another
one of the dairies who were paid off last
week, made his appearance before the
Mayor yesterday morning, for drunken
ness, who did’nt have enough of his money
to pay three dollars costs. He managed to
straighten the matter up by disposing of
Ins repeater. It only takes one good drunk
to carry off what remains after completing
their wardrobes.
The Auction Business.. —The new
Auction house of Longley & Walsh, on
Cherry street, near Cotton Avenue, is as
much o; a convenience to dealers as it is to
those in want of bargains in such articles
as are generally lobe had at auction houses.
Most of the gltods sold by them are from
the case —new goods, and not trash or
damaged articles. Country dealers would
lind it to their advantage to attend their
sales.
(.'arson Cox.—We are pleased to learn,
as will doubtless be the traveling public,
that this popular and eourteuus gentleman
who was for some time, a passenger con
ductor on the Macon and Western Rail
road, and recently assistant superinten
dent of that line, has taken a passenger
train on the South-W estem Railroad, and
entered upon the discharge ot tus duties in
that capacity. We congratulate that com
pany upon Uieir.’good fortune in securing
a gentleman so w orthy of the trust placed
in his bauds, and the traveling public
upon securing one so careful mr their
comport and safety.
Watch Them. — it would be surpris-.
ing to some mothers and fathers—who,
perhaps are at home hard at work, to keep
otf starvation —to sec their sons on Cherry
or Mulberry street. Only yesterday we
saw a little scape-grace, not more than ten
or twelve years old, promenading Cherry
street with tin* handle of a small pistohpro
truding from his pocket. Besides this he
was about “three sheets in the wind,” and
it required two of his more prudent asso
ciates to keep liim docile enough to remain
out of the clutches of the city police. This
is not the lirst ease of this kind we. have
seen. Scenes altogether as disgusting are
of common occurrence. Barents, nip this
evil in the bud, or else the hang-man will
“nip” it when full blown.
Mayor's Court. —There was some fall
ing off from the usual interest manifested
in the transactions of this tribunal yesteiv
day morning, and a comparatively small
number in attendance.
Francis Harris, Kacheal Lightfoot, T.
Nixon, and some others were Charged with
keeping a disorderly house, and each re
quired to pay live dollars and costs.
Seaborn, a “disbanded" darkey, after
fitffhg up bis “bureau,” had a few dollars
left, which were invested in a, sufficient
amount of the “red eye" to prove too hea
vy a load for him, and landed him in the
guard house. As he complained ol poor
fare and rough lodgings at that institution,
lie was let off with costs.
J. Morris, another drayman, was forcibly
reminded of the purpose of the city coun
cil to carry out the ordinance in regard to
fast driving in the streets, to the amount I
of costs. , . ;
J.Doodenfetoher, thought if a large horse j
was allowed to canter, his small ani-mute
should be allowed to “run like fury," but
received information to the contrary, for
which he was charged costs.
Some three or four others —principally
of “them sort" of white ladies, were dock
eted, but failed to be on hand, and were
laid over until Monday. »
UMiuThe gross expenditures of the United
States Treasury for the quarter ending De
cember 31,1866, were $286,898,549 14.

Nashville, January 25, 1860. /
Within the last day or two uncurrent
funds have declined, and consequently,
less is offering. Money continues close,
and business is at a stand still, except for
small jobbers.
The continued good accounts from the
up-river oil regions render us hopeful for
a future great oil trade. But our people
must be alive to the matter. Store-houses,
refineries, and"barrel factories are required
to arrest tiie trade from going to Louis
ville and Cincinnati, where large estab
lishments, like those we mention, are in
operation. As yet, of this hundreds of bar
rels of petroleum •that have come down
from up the river, not one has been landed
we believe, but all have been trans-shipped
up the Ohio.
The resumption of frieght traffic south
ward by rebuilding the broken bridges,
will probably enliven trade next week.

Notice to the Public.
In the year 1846, the writer embarked in the Drug
business in the city of Phi'adephia, and while thus en
gaged, made several experiments in regard to the most
desirable mode of preparing Fluid Extracts. My ef
forts being successful—the articles being approved and
used by the Medical Faculty—l was desirous of plac
ing them before the public, but besitated for some time
before.concluding to resort to newspaper advertising,
knowing r f the prejudices that existed in the minds of
many against us : ng advertised Medicines or Rostrums,
but through the advice of friends, and those who had
used them, this objection was overcome.
After IS years’exertions, commencing in a small
way, the popularity of my ai tides has extended to all
parts of the United States, and widely throughout for
ejgnfeountrii.il —and this in the face of much opposition.
Every means has been resorted to by unprincipled
dealers since their merit and succ. rs have been known,
such as advertising larger bottles at less price, ceusur
ing all other pi eparations,- and even copying my ad
vettisements—but lam happy to state that out of the
many who have resorted to this, none have been sue*
cessful.
My 03>ject
in this notice is to make facts known to the public and
respectable dealers, believing, after so many years’ ex
ertions, thai the Druggists will discountenance such
proceedings, and that the reputation of my articles may
not be damaged by the use of inferior y spurious ones.
Kuowing that many may tead this article who are
unacquainted with me, I append a few remarks from
those of my native city, whose names are known it: all
parts of the world:
i • 4
“Being personally acquainted with Mr. H. T. Helm
bold, it affords me pleasure in stating I have been most
favorable impressed with his eaergv and integrity,
and gratified at his success.”'

Ninth and Brown streets, Philadelphia
(Evening Bulletin, Philadelphia .)
' When on a visit to the city of New York a few days
since, we was induced Jo call on our old friend aud
townsman, Mr. H. TANARUS, Helmbold, Druggist, 591 Broad
way, N. Y. His store is a Model—a perfect Gem— the
handsomest of any kind we have ever had the pleasure
of viewing, aud so extensive, being 84 feet front, five
stories in height, and over 200 feet deep. It indeed af
fords us much pleasure to know that be has been so
successful, and it is ample evidence of the merits of
bis articles—as in our whole business experience we
have-not known of the success of any articles without
MEniT —advertising merely bringing the name before
the people.
(Boston Herald.)
“We do not like to advertise worthless wares, or
articles calculated to deceive our readers; and when
we see an advertiser like Mr. Helmbold, whom we
hare known for years, gradually extend his advertising
from year to year until he becomes the largest adver
tiser in the United States,, we are satisfied that the
Statements in regard to his articles, must be correct.
The writer reluctantly inserts the above, and would
not do so were he not a straDger to many; and con
cludes by stating the names of his articles, and the
diseases for which they have been used by many thou
sands with complete success.
