E>atari* Constitution: Winter fashions, for
several years past, might just ns well have
been designed for spring, autumn, or even
summer. In fact, the}’ came to i;s after be
ing used up in the later ser.rons abroad, and
were simply “ adopted ” by lieing put into
thicker fabrics than tlic original garments.
Wc are not much better off this season, so
far as imported designs are concerned. We
have still the abort jackets, the small slashed
paletots, made heavy without warmth, by
thick ornamental embroidery, ami in addi
tion, the polonaise, which has been made to
serve ever} possible in-and-out door use,
since it w as invented. This is a comfort this
.season, however, which we have not always
had, in an appearance, at least, of warmth.
■Woolen fabrics, wanner colors, ami the many
and various uses to which fur is put, render
the general aspect of ladies dressed for a win
ter promenade, more appropriate, and, there
fore, more Ix-coming and attractive, for noth
ing kills beauty more effectually than cold
aud a sense of discomfort.
TIIE OPERA SK. VSON
has so far been more successful than any wc
have Lad for the past ten years. It has re
vivod the old traditions of the “full dress’’
night of the .Academy, when ladies wore in
valuable trains and stomachers, and gentle
men did not venture in tin presence of ladies
without white kids, pumps and dre
Tiie spectacle on a “dress’’ night is best
seen from the laixes forming the upper tier,
and it is really worth while to endure the heat
and close, stuffy atmosphe re occasionally for
the sake of seeing the gotgeous display
around and below. There is no powdered
hair, much less false hair, worn than la-t
season, and few elaborate head-dresses are to
lie seen: but the toilettes arc often inagnifi
cent, and in fact, must lie to be distinguished
iu u crowd w hen all are well and more
less eh irauily dressed
Among the number that attracted attend
recently were a mother and daughter, t
mother still young and handsome. The
older lady wore a rich w hite satin c per;
cloak, embroidered in colors and bordered
dress white silk fringe, which she threw aside
a? she entered her box.
Tiie dress was of black Lyons velvet, cut
low and square, with long coat sleeves and a
train. Her ornaments were a square deep
collar and cuffs of old point lace, the collar
outlining the low neck of the dress, and
iiaving a ruffle alone and a plain dress lace
l>elow, a diamond cross and necklace, and
diamond ear-rings. No bracelets
The »laiighter, a fair-haired blonde, wore a
dress of pale bluish pink, covered with a
fichu, and long overskirt of fine French mus
lin, and exquisite Valenciennes lace. It u
looped with black velvet and pale roses, and a
knot of the same formed a decoration
for the corsage. Her ornaments were
pearls* her round arms were partly cov
ered by long white kid gloves, and she
carried a black lace fan, and a loose 1h>
quuet of long-stemmed English roses. In
a box near was a lady dressed in a nile green
silk ornamented with soft ruches and white
embroidered Cashmere cloak lined with silk
and trimmed with clicnile fringe was tossed
aside, and in her hair shone a diamond spray
which must have cost not less than five thous
and dollars.
A white satin fiuished, yros grain pro
fusely trimmed with black thread lace over
white, was worn by a brilliant brunette, who
displayed a diamond-mounted opera glass, an
ivory fan with a gold monogram and a scar
let opera cloak embroidered with white silk.
Her ornaments were unique. They consisted
of coral, mounted as spray, and at the tip of
eve~y leaf and in the heart of every flower, a
diamond nestled like a drop of dew. A very
agreable surprise was created by the appear
Alice of Duval in the opvra of La Sonambola.
The pleasant haMt we have of defying some
thing and ignoring or speaking with con
tempt of every thing and everybody else is
infinitely discouraging to all those who have
not yet *i inen to tl*e rank of popular idols.
Duval has not only had to contend against
this obsl&ci*-, but against the fact that ail the
influence that could be, has been bought up
in Xili^ow's Interest, an entirely unnecessary
provision, for Nilsson can afford to stand on
her merits and be magnanimous to other
artists. Duval, however, brings a fresh,
swert v<»»ce, equal to all the requirements of
the most arduous roUs, high, careful culture,
a true artbd.ic perception and great emotional
power, lo meet the exigencies of the case,
aud iu La ^onamhula not only succeeded in
overcoming prdndicca which had been In-
dustriBWfcy created but established her claims
to high, if not tne highest position.

A TWO THOUSAND DOLLAL OPERA. ©LASS.
Passing down again on the luxurious elc

only three strands, but the pearls are al

There are Russia leather portmonnnies, with
plain, solid silver fastening, which cost from

they commence with gilt clasp is five dollars,

spending money for those who have it.
WEDDING GIFTS.
It is upon wedding gifts, however, that the
largest sums of money are spent. So “ reg
ular” is the custom becoming iu this respect,
that we can only suppose that it has come to
be regarded in the height of a mercantile
transaction, in which so much is given for so
much. The articles most sold for wedding
presents, are small tea-sets of poli*htxl silver,
comprising five pieces and ranging in price
from three hundred and fifty to five hundred
dollars. The trade in solid, aud especially
polished silver, which at one time w;i» very
much depressed, has greatly increased with
in ten years, due partly, of course, to the in
creasing wealth of individuals and the com
munity, but largely to the fashion of making
silver bridal presents.
Poor relations content themselves with

but large as the outlay may seem to the pur
chasers the articles look very small beside
solid sets of table and desert ware, or massive
single articles for use or decorations.
Magnificent new centrepieces arc just now
a great rage, bolding five gold lined dishes
for fruit and confectionery. All the*e can
be taken apaVt and used separately, and the
stand still retain beauty as an ornamental
article. The cost is eleven hundred and fifty
dollars.

BERTH DATS.
Birth-days are beginning to be observed
here as in' Germany, by the presentation of
flowers and gifts, only as we deem it neces
sary to do eveiy thing here in a more oostiy
manner, than anywhere else, the money
spent on the flowers lor one birth-day in this
country would last a lifetime in Germany.
The florl'ts ia the fashionable business t
of New York City are about as thick os the
confectionaries, and the wonderful display
made of gorgeous hot-house flowers, Cornelias,
japonicas, tul» ro ca and the like, show the
extent which flower culture has ftttained.by
artificial means.
One cannot walk across the parks or down
Fifth or Madison Avenue at any time doting
the day or tevniug, lioruly during the gay
months, without meeting men carrying lr-ge
baskets, and superb pyramidal pieces,
mounted upon a i*«n4 of waaden litter, ex
quisite in floral col* ring and filling the cold
air with summer fragrance.
Every second window in ti*e aristocratic
parts of the city exhibit CTiat hoqocts, in ad

monocram in blood-red or purple, this being
the latest and favorite coral method of ex
