Editor* Corutitution: Tour correspondent
baa been a resident of this beautiful and
pleasant little dty for more than a year pant
Official duties render It impracticable to cul
tivate tbe acquaintance of tbe people to any
very great extent, as I travel through some
six counties every two or three months.
Nevertheless, I may tell you something that
I see and know.
The farmers sro very backward, but very
busy. Tbe freedmen are generally reported
to be doing well for them. Much cotton is
to be planted. Scarcely any wheat is
in parts of tho counties I go f
Harris, Meriwether, Coweta, especially press
the cotton culture. Corn, rye, oats, barley,
clover, wheat, are secondary considerations.
Less will be crown than usual this season,
owing to the low price of bacon and com,
(when compared with tbe price of cotton.)
The firming is done better than it was some
yean ago, but it is generally far from acien-
tifle now. There are some] scientific farmers
in this section. Plowing np and down the
hill, ignoring hill-aide ditching and horizon-
tal farrows ■ yet done by some with gullied,
bald, red, hills staring tbe ploughman in tbe
facet This is not the rule in this conntiy,
however. There is some manufacturing of
cotton gins and railroad can in this section,
but very little, comparatively.
But one thing the towns, villages, cities,
and people generally are alive to: that is ed
ucation. First class schools at Ncwnan,
LaQrange, West Point, UoganaviUe, Seooia,
Palmetto. Gramville, Greenville—in town, in
conntiy, the schoolmaster is ahead. Here,
at LaGnngr, there are three institutions of
training—two for. females and one for males.
The male school is well officered by compe
tent teachers, *nd is c
and young men to any
mathematics, the lan
French and German,
a capita] school of preparation for any cites
in college.
Ur. 1. F. Cox has an excellent female
school, which is under the control of the
Baptists, lie has given it tho name of an
Institution located here before the war. The
North Georgia Conference and the Metho
dists of LaGrange own Jointly a long estab

LaGrange Female College. It was purchased
from the Mrears. Montgomery in 1850 for
*40,000. Unfortunately the elegant stone
edifice was destroyed by fire, but a commo
dious, well arranged brick building is now
used. A very massive, splendid structure
being built daring the war bad to be aban-
. doned, and is yet unfinished. It will be one

dle ot December, and consequently moat un
expectedly resigned the Presidency of tbe
institution. But the trustets fortunately
secured the services of the talented and ac
complished Rev. E. P. Birch, and a full corps
of eight professors and teacher*. Tbe insti
tution has opened its spring term most satis
factorily, having sustained but little loss from

tho sudden and unexpected resignation of its

The number of Ha pupils is steadily increas
ing. Its boarding department is ample, and
in excellent hands. No female college offers
superior advantages. A large number of
persona have come to LaGrange to enjoy
her educational facilities. They have acted
wisely. When her new railroads are com
pleted, and her cotton factories, wagon fac
tories, bucket factories, plough factories,
foundries, and other industries are act in
operation, she will be a city Indeed.

Editor* Gmttitution: On yesterday the
Rod of the late Jim Fbkvras sold at execu

and horses, carriages, blank,

But the strange feature in the sale was
that nothing brmight anything like cost.
The hone upon which the renowned CM-
peel won military glory at the head of the
Ninth Regiment, known as Blncher, which
cost Fisk #•- ,•700, sold for *330. His favorite
carriage pair brought *1,000. Saddle horses
•old from #300 to *750.
Today 1 attended the sale ol
birds; about two-hundred and fifty were sold
with their cages—plain brass-wire cages
—bringing from eight to twenty-two dollars
per bird, with cage; which original
about seven dollars. A music box In the
form ot a steamboat was sold, bringing tbe
large sum of fifteen hundred dollars. Im
mediately after the last named article was
knocked off, a beautiful boat of Flak in
bronze, which must have coot a large
was offered for sale and brought the
•in of fifteen dollars.
Canary birds seem to have been snore ap
preciated than this splendid likeness of tbe
dever, bad, bad, man.
Fisk if pawing away and hit name will
•too be forgotten in Gotham, bat his works
wQl live on hat not for good.
Your readers may naturally inquire what
this strange man did with such a number of
birds. Their use was various. Sometimes
they sang for Sabbath School children at
their picnics. At other times their gilded
ages decorated tbe steamboat Plymouth'
Rock, plying between this city and Long
Branch. At other limes their innocent notes
might be heard in the palace of the up-town
Courtesan.
