Grant ns a t.ovrr«or-SInlcer,
Truly, if ever an official had a notion thrt
the country wis to be run for his individual
benefit Grant la that man. As ignorant»»
aw of the first {Mnciptea of the government,
without the allghtest conception of the nature
of hi* high office, Grant is prosUlntiug the
* Presidency in a way that should blast him
forever.
From the tealimony of General George W
Palmer, in Januaty, 1871, it appears that
Grant mado a strong effort to dictate whe
should be the Republican candidate for Go
ernorof New Ydti. Grant argued that L
was the head of the Republican party, that
all good Republicans Should support him in
ell ho did, and aH who didn’t Should be
crushed out. lie furthermore thought that:
he should dictate who should go to the con
ventions, and control Ihejugmentf of those
who did go.
Comment la needless.
The Industrial .association of *»■

This association baa been very unfortu
nate. It had a fine Pair last year but it* »uc-
cere was dearly won. it fell in victory. Its
bnildings and expense* run to $93,000, a mar
gin of coats double its asrets and receipts.
The institution went into smash and baa beci,
sold oat. Mr. Joseph Lippman, an enter
prising citizen bought the concern for $20,-
000 the other day al public out-cry- A debt
of $38,823 81 is doe and wiped oat by the
sale.
Mr. Lippman proposes to form a joint
stock company with a capital stock of $23,-
000, with fifty shares of $500. Already
$5,00) has been subscribed.
With the valuable grounds and buildings
obtained at one-fourth cost, and an enterpris
ing and judicious administration, there is r.o
i why the association should not prove
We with it a useful future.
The receipts at the ports last week were

and 5,000 bales less than two years since.
The receipt* at the interior towns were 7,OOP

ures as two years ago.
It Is likely the receipts will bo 35,000 bale*
this week, compared with 03,000 last year,
and 43,000 the year before. And receipts at
interior towns indicate 8,000 bale* this week,
compared with 12,000 bales last year, and
6.000 the year before.
The present course of receipts is about one
half of last year, when tbs receipts .at the

For the informallrnof some of our readers
we will state that what are called the interior
towns are seven in number and are the prin
cipal Interior cotton depots in Georgia, Ala
bama and Tennessee—Augusta, Columbus,
Macon, Montgomery, Selma, Memphis and
Nashville. The receipts at Memphis are
usually about one half of the whole.
The very brisk market in New York and
Liverpool this week is on Isocount of the
heavy cold rains in the South last week, and
not, as some persona suppose, on account of
decreased receipts. As the price in New York
is how over one cent per pound above* parity
with Liverpool, it is likely New
have to fall half scent, or Liverpool rise one-
fourth of a penny soon.
We have had two warm spring rains this
week, and farmer* will have to work eariy.
and Ute this month. The cotton planting
season begin* in ten days, and most of the
crop win be pUnted this month. - Warm
rains and plenty of feettlu-n will make cot
too grow rapidly if kept olean of weed-. The
long continued cold and wet of last mouth
has made farmers gloomy; but warm, light
rains this month, and a dry May will re-t *re
