FROM PANAMA.
DISTURBED CONDITION OF THE
COUNTRY.

dotlsra foe ooe month. ftmiehSSS
Panama, October 18.—On the night of the
23d of September, the Correoso party that
had been lurking some time in the -woods,
some distance from the city, came in and
occupied the anburbe, which the government
had left unprotected. They opened fire the
next morning, and kept it up almost inces
santly till the 6th instant, when they re
tired- While the hostilities were going
on General Correoso arrived from Costa
land secretly at once’ took direction ^pro
ceedings against the Government of Gen.
Neka. He at once announced that Gen.
Neira had ceased to he the legitimate Presi
dent of the State of Panama ever since he
was overthrown by the revolution of April
5 th, that expelled him from the State, and he,
Carrioeo, being first designated to substitute
in such a case he proclaimed to be the
legal President. The Government, how
ever, refused to come to terms and made
resistance successfully. It is supposed that
the rebel’s amunitiou gave out. It is believed
they will return and renew the attack. In
the contest both sides were armed with rifles
of the most approved pattern. The govern*
meat had the advantage of possessing the
cannon which have produced such great de
struction to many valuable bouses during the
continuance of this contest. Fortnately
Admiral Saliny arrived and hoisted his
flag on the United States steamer Pensacola,
and seeing the unprotected condition of tran
sit from the disordered condition of the city,
and there being no national force in the
port, the Colombia landed 150 men at the
railroad station, and afterwards, at there-
•quest of the Government itself 60 men and
their officers were sent out and demanded
that the train should be stopped and all the
passengers searched. The Admiral, on
being informed of this daring attempt
on the freedom of Inter-Oceanic travel,
it was ordered that a guard of United States
marines accompany each train and shoot
down any armed men who shall try to
interfere with it.
The inability of the government to pro
tect its transit calls forth much comment.
A constituent assembly, which was or
ganized to settle matters, has done little else
than to authorize a forced loan of $20,000 on
the city, and $50,000 on the province.
The state of affairs unsettles business in
■ Panama.
It is hoped that Admiral Almy will not
give up possession, and the protection of the
transit will be assured, and travel be no further
disturbed.
