was directed to the store house of

situated the Masonic lodge.

An effort was made to get water and
blankets to the top of the building, with
a view of saving it ; hut shortly after
the otiice building took tire, the heat
became so intense h* to prevent labor
at the west end of the store house, and
it soon took ti e.
-Vain street intervened between the
store house ami Col. Budlumnon’*

tire, a determined effort was made to
save the dwelling; which, we are h ippy
to say, was successful. There were
three buildings destroyed, involving a
loss *»f ab -ut two thousand to twenty-
five hundred dolian. So insurance.

The skillfully executed gold $5pieces
hich have recently been creating con
siderable excitement in New York, and
at the Washington mint, have fi
nally turned up on this coast, and were
lay* ago refused at the Bank of
California and sent up to the mint to be
assayed. When the piece came to the
mint it was pronounced genuine by sev-
ral parties whose ex j*erience with coins
i all d scriptions entitles their judg
ment to corfHiderafion. The piece was
somewhat lighter in color than theg^dd
finerl »>ere, but this was supposed to
be accounted for bv it* having been
coined at the Philadelphia mint, where
for a number of year* the process of
working the metal gave it a light color
wiilmut in the slightest degree detract
ing from its value. The counterfeit
was also carefully weights! ant! found
t4> conn* ui» to the standard. “Look
inside.” suggested somebody, and
accordingly a piece of tie c*dn
wan ->aw'ed off, and the fraud
was at once apparent. While the piece
resembled g"ld to all intent* ami pur-
p4*st*H, it was periectly white inside,
simply a piece of platinum plated with
gold. The platinum gave it the weight,
an<l, in fact, a piece of platinum the
size 4.f a five dollar gold pie e would
weigh more than the g.*ld. This diffi
culty was obviated by makingthe piece
a trifle thinner than the genuine coin.
I he difference was not noticeable. The
sjM-4-ific gravity of gold is 19 36,platinum
21 15. The peculiar properties of plati
num have often given rise to fraudu
lent admixtures which have deceived
experienced nssayers. Experiments
by M. Vanquelin’ a French chemist^
determined the fact that where the
platinum does not exceed thirty or fort,
parts in the one-thousandth of the
alloy, the presence of the platinum
m»t determined by Ordinary test. In
this instance, however, no uttempt
was made t«* mix the metal,
but the gold plating covered
the platinum. Planlinutu is worth
