The negro is ignorant and apprehen

We know that the good people of

such a suspicion and we urge them to
put forth every effort to bring mur

This is all very funny. Our very
independence is quoted against ua.
We miwitied that Governor Colquitt's
proclamation in regard to the bogus
bond amendment, should have more

Athens Georgian remarked that we
were dimmed to "strike” at General
Colquitt. It is not and never has been

to our attitude towards the Governor.
Dr. Carlton, himself, lias published to

Injustice in liis article to which the
Telegraph alludes, and this publication,
we feel sure, must have fallen under
the observation of some one of the
editors of the Telegraph. At any rate,
they may he assured that Tiib Consti
ti’tion is in a position to exercise per
fect independence in its relations with
offtci *)s of every grade, and in its com
ments upon questions of public impor
tance. But we do not propose to prove
our independence by indulging in cap
tious criticism nor is it o.ir purpose to
diftj»lay our friendship for Gov. Col
quitt and our cordial sympathy with
Ida administration by'indulging in any
f ilsome praise.
In mother part of their article the
editors of the Macon Telegraph allude
to "discourteous personal ellusions'
and "the vocabulary of courteous jour
nalists." We suggest most respect fully
that they study that vocabulary. Are
their insinuations that Tiib Conntitv-
tios is playing a double part in this
convention business either courteous
or just? Is it courteous or just upon
their part to rake up charges of "fence
riding” that were made against Thk
Constittiom under another and en
tireiy different management? As to
whether those charges were true in the
l«*t, we neither know nor care; but
such charges can never be truthfully
applied to this journal while it It in
charge of its present managers, and if
the editors of the Telegraph can do
nothing lietter towards advocating a
convention than by dealing in such in
sinnati ms we advise them to addrem

As to our use of the word "impu

the sudden changes of lsuie of the edi
tors of the Telegraph, in the matter of
the establishment of the whipping-post,
we do not hesitate to aav that nothing

There is nothing that shonlil interest
our citv readers more than news about
Atlanta. The concise resume of our
affairs that the mayor furnishes to a
CoWsmrTioM reporter this morning,
will attract notice and inspire confl
deuce. It shows that the shiinksge < u
the property of the city haa been ex
ceeoingly small, not amounting to
more than one and one third per cent.
It shows that without increasing the
tax-rate the departmenta can be effici
ently bandied and $50,000 devoted to
the reduction of the public debt. It
shows that the water works are self-
smtaining; ii shows that the public
schools will get a sufficiency of funds
to make them free schools the year
through; it shows that a proper sewsge
system has l»een commenced; it shows
that the credit of the citv
wonderfilly in the past few months,
an ! our bonds are worth ten per cent,
more tlian they were six months • gv
We call especial attention
the operation of the
law concerning the water
works that will be put into operation
by the city council at occe. It will be
seen that it forces a tax of seven dollars
a year from the owner of every piece of
improved property in front of which the
water pipes run, whether or not it
supplied with w ter. It will of
be beat under thia ruling for every
owner to have the water intndoced
iutn his house, as the cost will be only
slightly iu * xc«*N» of shat he will have
to pay anyhow.
Tne mayor's interview furnishes
a bright and cheering outlook
h» our goodly city—the brave, young
towr that lias now her fortune in the
face of a storm of abuse.
