Report or Second Day’s Proceedings
GAXNZtvmx, Ga., June 28,1878
Editoes Constitution : The conven
tion opened at 9 o'clock with devo
tional exercises by J. G. LaUrand, of
Carnes ville. At 9:30 a Bible reading on
“Things we ought to know” waa given
by J. H. Elliott, of Augusta. The min
utes of mevious sessions were then
read ana adopted with necessary
amendments
The topic,“E«ential qualifications for
successful work,”was now discusaed by
Mr. Charlie G. Eckford, of Atlanta.
His address was noble in thpught and
imprestive in delivery. A distinguish
ed gentleman remarked to your re
porter that Charlie Eckford had in him
the elements of a great man.
At 11 o'clock the fraternal messengers
from the State Sunday school associa
tion were received. A committee
consisting oi Messrs. Crawford
and Nichols was appointed
notify the messengers that
the convention was ready to receive
them. The fraternal messengers, Hon.
H. P. Bell, member of congress from
the ninth district, and CoL Estes, a
prominent lawyer of Gainesville, ad

good and J. B. Hill.
Convention opened at 3 o'clock, with
a devotional exercise led by Mr. A. M.
Jackson, ot Gainesville.
The following additional delegate
was reported by the committee on cre
dentials: Rev. J. D. Hammond, of
Athens.
Tne topic, “the Bible in association
work,” was then discussed by C. F.
Cathine.of Newnan, in an effective
manner. Messrs. Cree, of New
York, and Wallace of Augusta, joined
in the discussion. After singing No. 6
in No. 2, our popular young townsman,
Mr. W. R. Brown, made a fine effort on
“Y. M. C. A. work in prisons.” ,
Convention adjourned to meet Bat<

Card from Hon. James R Brown 1
Canton. Jane 27th.
To the Democracy of the Seventh Congressional
DUtrict: ,
As my name has been suggested in
connection with the nomination of a
candidate to represent this district in
the next congress oi the United Statee
by the convention which meets at Ring-
gold on the 4th of July next, I feel it to
be my duty to address you this letter
in advance of the meeting of the con
vention. I confess that the mere men
tion of my name as a suitable person
for that high and honorable position is
an honor for which I am sincerely
grateful to those friends who have seen
proper to refer to me in that connec
tion. To be suggested as the standard
bearer of the democracy of this district
the present critical condi
tion of oar political affairs
when the peace, prosperity and happi<
ness of the whole country may depend
upon the success of the democratic
j&rty, is an honor with responsibilities
: oo high to be sought or refused without
due consideration of all the circum-
siTnces surrounding it. I will not dis
guise the fact that I should have felt
not only complimented, but honored
by the nomination. But there are cir
cumstances (over which I have no con
trol) which forbid that I should allow
the use of my name as a candidate. As
a general proposition it is ecarcely
allowable to refer to personal or family
matters in such a connection, but it is
well known that my wife has been
severely afflicted and a great sufferer
for a length of time,
not having been able
walk a step for abont two years. She
has been under medical treatment in
the city of Atlanta for some months
past, and I bad entertained hopes
death. —A pplctoo'e Journal for July.

And the various sorts I neatly mix,
For I am fully up to all the tricks
That prevail in Louisiana.
My few remarks are cut and dried,
And Sherman himself the tale has tried,
hard to prove that I have lied.
Must keep as silent as h* can.
And Sherman 1 luUy exonerate
From all the wrongs, both little and great.
That occurred in Louisiana.
Now, there yon have It. and that’s enough 1
*Tis easy to see that I'm up to snuff,

Take on tnai cocu-eyea man, 1 pray 1
We were never treated in such a way
Down there In Louisiana.
He tangles my story—can’t you see ?—
And makes me say more than Is good for me,
Although I am smart as anv can be
Who come up Irom Louisiana.
I did It myself, but reluse to swear
To whom, or why. or when, or where.
I wrote or dictated that letter there.
Which straightened up Louisiana.
Yon don't believe it? I'd have yon to know
that at home we never treat wUnease* so.
And I want to pack np my things and go
Straight back to Louisiana.

proud of her nationality and devoted
to everything Spanish. The poor chdd
is in the deepest mourning now, for she
that ehe wonld have been relieved, and

and the government of onr children!
These hopes however has not been re

my country ehould demand my sarvi*

competent to fill the place could not be
had, which is not true in this case.
There are men in different parts **
this congresional district, to whom
is no flzttery to say they are not only
my superiors in point of qnalificaton and
fitness for the position, but the peers
of the ablest and best men of the state.
And if it should bethought best to se

the district as has been suggested by
some, there are other gentlemen
whose friends have been urging their
nomination, and at least some of whom
I understand have announced that
they would accept the nomination if
tendered to them; whose qualification
and fitness for the position give ample
guarantee that the interest of the party
would not snffer in the hands of such a
standard-bearer. I desire, however,
while declining to permit the use of
my name, to u^ge upon my fnends
and the convention perfect harmony
and concert of action. The eyes of mil*®
lions of anxious patriots scattered all
over the country from Maine to Cali

which is before the country is fraught
with considerations too grave to be
lightly regarded or under-estimated by
good and true men. Let no man shrink

language of a dying hero on the oattie-
field at a critical period in onr country’s
history, “there is work for every man
to do. v I shall at ail times be ready in

Galveston, Jane 28.—The News*
special from Fort Sill, Indian Territory,
says, Deputy United States Marshal
Merehon, of Fort Smith, Arkansas,
came here after two Indians who were
confined with a number of others on an
Indian farm three miles from here.
The Indians learning his object sang
their war song and attacked the mar
shal and his poese with pistols and
bowie knives. A lively fight ensued
daring which the twe Indians were
killed. It is teared that the affair may
cause the Comanches to go on the waf-
path.
