Was paroled by Duncan, who had charge of the bakery. His word was law there. Q What do- you know of his diverting the. rations from their proper channels ? A. I saw bags of meal come into the oakery, sometimes more and sometimes less. Duncan would generally be there in the moruing. He would assign so many bags to go into the brea'd and would sav that w$a sufficient—probably there would be three or four bags lett over. When the bread was baked, loaves would be counted out to the detachments. Sometimes there would be ten or fifteen cards ot this bread left, after counting that which wouid b^jMled un on the “stage” in the bakery. I #iw Sft. Diin can on two occasions order a bpykmed Miller to take these cards of brijk tlp k> his hog-pen. * v .! 1 saw Miller take a bag of meal up to thtT hog-pen, afterwards saw the meal in the pen. I also saw the pigs in the pen eating com bread. The bread was in chunks some pieces being large enough to make three; or four rations inside the stockade. I remarked to Duncan oue day when the dead cart came out witli 15 or 20 bodies which were mere skeletons, that “it there was a God in heaven some one would suffer for the way these poor helpless men.’Were’ abused. Duncan replied, that “he didn’t want to hear any more talk from me ; if I did t like where I waFl coiilcSgo inside and starve with the rest of them.” So I shut up. With regard to Duncan’s opening boxes one day while I was at Duncan’s -house, a lady gave me a cup ot lea. Duncan came in and i remarked that it seemed like home to drink a cup of tea. Duncan said, “you ought to have been here when the Yanks’ boxes were opened; you would have had dead loads of tea.” Duncan had shirts on which 1 don’t believe he could have got from anywhere but out of the boxes. Mr. Duncan was very familiar with the men outside; sometimes he would appear very kind. Q. Did you ever try to buy your release ? To whom did you apply? A. One day Mr. Brown, Mr. Duncan and my sell were walking up the road towards the depot. I said, “Mr. Duncan I've got the belly-ache and want to go home.” Said lie, “Is that all you have got? If you haven’t any greenbacks your belly ache can keep on.” Speaking of some news received of a Fed eral victory, Duncan remarked that “we were doing more good than Gen.
