We have before in these columns alluded to induce ments at present offered to planters of our section by the cultivation of the palms christi or castor bean, in the belief that it offers a better return in profits than any other crop. We are more than ever confirmed in this opinion by statements which we have recently seen in our exchanges. An experienced Mississippi planter furnishes the New Orleans Times the following esti mate showing the probable loss from working ten hired bands in the cultivation of cotton, basing his calculations on 40 cents per pound as the price of cot ton. The following is his estimate: Ten hands making 1,603 pounds each— 10,000 pounds at 40c 400 00 Less charges for selling, say— Freight per railroad, $5 per bale on forty biles $300 00 Internal Revenue. 2c per lb 320 00 Insurance $2 50 per bale 100 00 State Taxes in Miss, and La 100 00 D. The disorderly conduct was sad a-u'endaut mulcted iu the sum of ten if the writer’s figures are reliable, and we leave our planters to judge the mutter for themselves, certainly there are other crops that would yield a better return. Mr. Gregory in his circular says: "The very simple process of cultivation enables one good hand and mule to attend to from thirty to forty acres, and the consequent yield at three cents per pound, (tlie rate I contract for in advance), would rea lize from $60 to $130 per acre, and to each hand from about $2,1)00 to $4,000. No other crop can exhibit equal inducements." As au earnest of his confidence in this statement, it will be seen by his advertisement in another column that he offers to forfeit $100, to be appropriated to any charitable institution the Mayor of Savannah may se lect, if one hand employed in the culture of the castor bean does not yield double the amount in value that can be made by one hand planting cotton. We saw on Saturday several contracts of planters in our vicinity who are going into the culture of the castor bean, which, we understand, can be successful ly planted as late as in early May.
