Savannah News and Herald. BY 8. W. MASON. SAMVEL YV. MASON, Editor, YV. T. THOMPSON, Associate Editor. Official Paper of the City. LARGEST CIRCULATION IN THE CITY AND COUNTY WEDNESDAY, APRIL. 11, 1800. HON. A. H. STEPHENS IN WASHING TON. Our readers Lave already been informed that our distinguished Senator Hon. A. II. Stephens had had an interview with Presi dent Johnson. Prom the Washington letters we learn that he was among the guests at a grand reception given hy General Grant on Saturday night last. Alluding to the distin guished personages present on that occasion, among whom was the President of the United States, the correspondent ol the New York Herald says: “Not the least remarkable of the number was Alexander H. Stephens, of Georgia, whose spare, careworn figure and striking face made him easily distinguishable among the throng, and, though he evidently sought retirement as much as possible, many old- time friends sought him out and held him in pleasant conversation. The widely different fate of these two Vice Presidents—the un compromising loyal Tennessean and the re luctantly disloyal Georgian—was too marked not to present itself to every mind.” The correspondent of the Times says Mr. Stephens was “quite a lion, and was sur rounded by {Senators-' and Representatives, most of them Radicals, who gave him cor dial greeting.” Anniversary of the Union Society. It will be seen by the advertisement of the President, Wm. M. Wadley, Esq., that the Union Society will celebrate its one hundred and seventeenth anniversary, at Mariow, thirty miles from the city, on the Central road, on Tuesday, the 24th inst., and that the Central Railroad Company has kindly tendered to the members of the Society and their tamilies the free use of a train to go and return. We trust there is no appeal neces sary to revive the interest of the member ship, embracing as it does a very large por tion of our citizens, in this time-honored and noble Institution. In days of prosperity and plenty it was a cherished object of their soli- licitude—now it more than ever needs their liberal aid and fostering care. It has shared in the common misfortune of the times, and while the objects of its bounty have increased in numbers, its means have been greatly di minished, It therefore appeals to every be nevolent heart to come to its aid. The anniversary of the 24th will tie one of the most important and interesting anuual meetings in the history of the Society, and we hope to see a large attendance, not only of the present members, but of those who are willing to unite in promoting tlie benevo lent objects of an association which for more than an hundred years has devoted its means to the protection, support aud education ot orphan boys. The excursion to Marlow will afford a pleasant recreation to members and their families. Those who wish to join the Society are also invited by the President. IN GENERAL.. —The annual fast in Massachusetts was extensively observed un the 7th, by a general suspension of busi ness, and church attending. —It is understood that the Hon. Chauncey M. De pew has been appointed CoUector of New York. —The Probate Judge of Monroe county, Miss., has rendered a decision justifying the action of guardians in investing the money of wards in Confederate bonds. Xt is considered, at New Orleans, that the Presi dent's proclamation is equivalent to a general am nesty, and that Benjamin and Slidell will return to Louisiana. —it is suggested by a Richmond paper that the cele brated “crater farm,” where the celebrated “• crater mine” was exploded before Petersburg, July 30, 18G4. be selected for a Southern cemetery, and that provi sion for this purpose be made by the different South ern States. Tlie proprietor of the place savs that the oHtate is so incumbered with confederate dead that it is impossible to cultivate the soil without disturbing their remains. —The project ot a saperatq State government for East Tennessee is now being much discussed through out that portion of the State. —Frightfully cold weather has prevailed on the Up per Missouri, the mureury sinking to forty degrees below zero. Much (listless is reported among the In dians in the vicinity, of Fort Sully. They are in a starving condition, and the small pox has also broken out among them. —The Supreme Court of the United States has ad journed sine (lie, without deciding the test oath case of Hugh S. Gurland, the rebellious Arkansas attorney. The justices are said to be decided on the question, which will probably come up at their, next winter's session. —A Norwegian woman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin gave birth, *Trw days since, to four children, all of whom are alive. —gghty-three negroes were baptized and received it«ie Methodist Church, at Indianapolis, April 1st -^Chicago has no park, or, as the Tribune of that city puts it, there are “fifteen square miles of mild without a green spot of land—two hundred thousand people without a breathing place." —The laying of tlie track of the South Carolina Railroad between Augusta and Charleston and Co lumbia was completed on the afternoon of the 5th mst. The first train was to arrive in Augusta or Fri- dav. Tin* dptv]}- elected City Council of St. Louis stands twenty-three conservatives to seven radicals. - The order to muster out the Canadian volunteer troops has*been rescinded, and largo forces are still being sent with attempted secrecy to the frontier. The monitor Monadnock has proved entirely sea-worthy. Col. Dahlgrcu, son of the Admiral, will shortly head a scientific party to explore the mineral resouices of U tali and Montana. CENTRAL RAILROAD AND BANKING COMPANY OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. ‘Almost a Terrible Railway Slaughter. On the morning of the 4th inst., tlie 12 o’clock train for Washington waB passing along the Pennsylvania Railroad track, west side of the Schuylkill, when a small iron bridge which crossed the road near tlie Wire Bridge, broke down, precipitating the engine ifnd fi nder into the road below. The train was running ■dr.wly or several cars would have shared a similar fate, t he engineer of the train, whose uawe is Zimmcr- mnu, and a firemau, name unknown, were killed, their hodu-s being so buried beneath the ruins that it was impossible to extricate them. Gbeat Enterprise.—The Alabama and Georgia Manufacturing Company has been organized, with a capital of two hundred thousand dollars, and will pro ceed at once to the erection of a large cotton factory at West Point, Georgia, with the ultimate aim of erect ing five more. The point selected fior this Lowell of the South is an admirable one. There is no better water power the iu country than that afforded by the Chattahoocliie at ibis point. Being immediately on the railroad, every facility for transportation is afforded. On the 1st of May the corner stone of the first mill will be laid. The Governors of both States wil be in vited to attend, and addresses will be made by Hon. B. H. Hill, Judge Chiton and others.—Atlanta Xew New Advertisements. T HEATR "E. President Wadley, to the stockholders of this corporation, un der date 1st March last, has fallen under our notice, and corrects an important error into which we, in common, we take it, with many others, had fallen, in relation to the fman- cail condition of the company. We were under the impression that the road was tied and bound to its northern bond holders by the weight of very heavy obliga tions for money furnished for the re-instation of the road-track destroyed during the war. Superficially this is true: the company do. s owe, all told $1,500,000 But in round numbers one-halt of this sum does not mature until 1875, and to meet the whole debt (as stated) of $1,500,000 The Company has stocks of the Southwestern, Augusta and Waynesboro' and other roads, cash and other assets which are, as the report states, “beyond all question good,” amounting to.. 1,CIS,112 So that the present means of the Company exceed their aggre gate liabilities, up to the year 1875, by 118,112 Mr. Wadley, after reciting the earnings of the road for February (when the communica tion with Augusta was resumed), at $76,000 very modestly “expects” that the future earnings of the road will be equal to the necessary payments, i. e., for the remaining repairs between Savannah and Macon. These repairs are now narrowed down to a dis tance of thirty miles, and as it is ascertained that the earnings of March are nearly twice those of February—reaching the extraordi nary total of S133.000—the road may be safely considered able to take care of itself and its remnant of recuperation. These thirty miles repaired, the question comes up, if the earnings are a hundred and fifty-three thousand dollars a month with the main track open only to a little beyond Millen, what will they be when the whole line to Ma con and Milledgeville is re-opened at the end of May? We doubt whether there is in the Union, North or South, so brilliant a future in prospect for any road. The timely removal into the interior of the costly machinery from the extensive work shops of the company has permitted the ef ficient restoration of this department, und a stroll through the buildings will repay for the trouble. Every item of repair or con struction, from the re-stuffing of a car cush ion to the completion from first to last, of the most powerful locomotives, is all done in these shops, and the order and intelligence of the employees will favor ably impress the visitor. Savannah may be proud of the road and its appointments, and the stockholders may be proud of Mr. Presi dent Wadley. THE TEST OATH CASES. It is announced that the decision of the Supreme Court on the test oath cases has been postponed. We see it stated in a Wash- on paper that the bench stood four, including tue Chief Justice, in favor of the oath, four against it and one undecided, who desfred a little more time to examine the subject before giving a final decision. In view of this dead lock a majority of the Court de cided, with the Chief Justice, that the de cision for and against the oath should be postponed until the next term, which will be about six months hence. This is considered a triumph by the Radicals in CoDgress, who had exhibited much fear that the decision would be adverse to the law imposing the Thi W» mw®* Rwtoun.— A writer in the Macon Telegraph, whom the editor assures Ids readers is one of the ablest jurists in the State, maintains that the privi lege of the writ of habeas corpus is- clearly restored by the President's peace proclama FUN Eli AL INVITATION.
