Oolethoupe Insurance Company of Savannah.— Ike citizens of Savannah and of the State at large will be gratified to learn from tho advertisement in another column that this popular .institution has been revived, und that it resumes business under the ad ministration of General H. W. Mercer, who waa on Monday elected President of the company. It will be seen that the Oglethorpe Company is prepared to take fire risks on reasonable terms, at their office, 117 Bay street, and that Mr. J. T. Thomas, Secretary, calls for an instalment of one dollar per share, to be paid be fore the 1st cf May next. Several witnesses were examined for the prosecution ' ’Ao gave their opinions that more than a moiety of th e house had been repaired. Whites 4 Colored 7 Mr. Lloyd, for the defence, said that the evidence plainly showed that not a moiety of the original house was repaired, but admitted that Lis client had tlffough ignoranca of the law, sot about the repairs -without having first got the sanction of council. He contend ed, however, that nut more than a moiety of the house was repaired, and therefore it did not come under that section of the ordinance. Mr. Hartridge, for the prosecution, said, that the ad missions of the counsel for the defendant were fatal. He Usd violated the law by even repairing his house without having first obtained permission of Council. After reading the different sections ot the fire ordl- uance and explaining their intention, he said it was the duty of the Mayor and Chief Fireman to apply the law to this case. His Honor remarked that under the seventh section of the ordinance the violation was obvious, and under tha tenth section, the case must either be settled by- fine, by pulling down the house, or by compromise, and said he would therefore refer the case, under that section, to the Chief Fireman for the enforcement of the ordinance, if after examination it be found that the ordinance has been violated.
