[From the Portland Argus, April 10.] ' The battalion of supposed Fenians, numbering some eighty men, which arrived in this city by ths steamer from JBoeton on Sunday morning, left for th« eastward last evening in the steamer New Brunswick. Boxes said to contain, arms and equipments, which arrived from New York a day or two since, consigned to a prominent Fenian in this city, were not taken on board, the reason given being that there was no room for them. There was quite an excitement on the wharf at the time of the departure. The British Con sul was present, and a squad of police officers kept the crowd back from the -steamer. The Fentons said nothing, bnt as soon as the gang-plank toached the wharf, headed by their leader, they charged gallantly aboard. They were a fine, soldierly-looking aat of fellows, and ao for as we learn behaved, themselves like gentlemen while in town. It was stated on the street last evening, th«t « schooner had been chartered to take the arms and equipments eastward. We may hear some startling news from the border before many days. * THE SENATE IN SESSION. The Senate of the Fenian Brotherhood were in se cret session yesterday. Very important business was transacted, and it is understood that provision was made for a movement, which is destined to startle the public at large in a few daya. There will be no delay in going to work, despite the fact that Mr. Killian’s little scheme of mobilizing the bonds'^ by. making de lusive attacks on the larders of the hotels of Eastport and Portland, has interfered with the invasion of' British North American territory. For tbe last Bix months John O’Mahony has been preaching' the doc trine of invading Ireland direct from the United States, and denouncing all who' opposed the mad ides; and Mr. Killian is ir EastpOrf with the intention of drawing the attention of the American Government to the fact that a number of armed men, without any territory in their possession, are operating against a government with which tho United States is at peace, in order that s neutrality proclamation may be issued by President Johnson, and thus crush forever an hopes of a successful Fenian movement. Ths Fenian Senate, composed principally of men who have busi ness to attend to and occupations to employ their time, have determined that action shall be taken at once in the matter, and a movement is in progress which will redeem the name of Fenian from the dis grace which is certain to entail on every man con nected with the organization, by this last promenade excursion of tbe Union Square cohorts. In afew days a trained body of veteran soldiers, commanded by efficient officers, under the personal leadership of General Sweeny, will be heard from in a direction not dreamed of by tbe uninitiated. Until then it will be well tor those who are anxieus for fight to wait pa tiently, and prepare-in the meantime. The members, of the Senate at present in Nekr York are as follow: President) James 1 Gibbons, Pennsylvania; Edward L. Carey, New York; P. J. Meehan, New York; Patrick O’Rourke, New York; William Bullivan, Ohio; Michael Scanlan, Illinois; A. L. Morrison, Missouri; Patrick Bannon, Kentucky; John Carlton, New Jersey; John Darby, District of Columbia; William Fleming, New York; James Donnelly, Massachusetts; James Fitzgerald, Ohio; B. B. Daly, Indiana; P>. W, Duun, Illinois. . . ’ THE EXPECTED ARRIVAL OF MR. STEPHENS.. Our reporter visited the O’Mahony Headquarters, in Union Square, yesterday, and w-as informed that the inscrutable James Stephens, whose arrival in this'city was conclusively expected by the Havre steamer on yesterday., had suddenly leaped upon the inhabitants of the island of Campo Bello. This intelligence was extensively circulated last night, having emanated from the Fenian headquarters at Union Square. When our reporter called, subsequently, on John O’Mahony, to ascertain either the validity or falsity of the rumor, Mr. O’Mahony significantly stated that he was unprepared to deny it. Stephens, it is further alleged, captured ths island of Campo Bello on yesterday, having led the attack with one of the British men-of-war which previously fell into the hands of the Fenians. The inabitants of St. John are fleeing in terror to ward Frederickton and other more secure ports of the interior. Stephens and Killian are said to be working in con cert. It is now understood that the preparations going on for the last few days at Union square, and purporting to pay a compliment to Stephens on his arrival here, were engaged in for tbe purpose of vail ing the point of his actual landing. TRIAL OF JAMBS W. MILITARY GOMfiCMSMM For Alleged Cruelty <0 Federal Prbtoeto at AnderseavUle. [Reported for the News and Herald.] Ths Military Commlsafbn, engaged upon the trial of James W. Duncan, mat again yesterday, more writ- nesses having arrived. Benj. B. Dykes, witness for ths prosecution, was first called: I was railroad and express agent aafi postmaster at Andersonvilie in 1864. 1 redds in Reuter coanty, Ga. I know the prisoner; do not knew anytUng about hie umktrig sales of provisions white at Andersonvilie; the day that hs left AndeafioBTilla be came to ms and asked me if I wanted to boy seven barrels of syrup; I told him I did not want to bay; ha thea asked as if I would take it and sell it; 1 toldhim l would if I could; he said, “take it then." I add to him, "Where is the syrup, and who will bring it?” He said Browers would bring it. I don’t know whether Browers brought it or not; there was syrup brought and put in the freight house and received by a man I had hired, and it was said to be the Duncan syrup; I did not an it; the syrup afterwards eras taken posaeadon of by a Confederate detective as stolen syrup; the syrup was taken from the freight bouse, and I know nothing more about it. I do not know of Dnncaa’s selling or moving any grease to* tho depot. I got. aoma grease from Humes for ths railroad company to graaas' the wheels of the cars; don’t know where it was brought from; I think 1 bought some eight or ten barrels of grease first and last from Humes: a hand eontained about 200 lbs , Cross-examined.—I do not know whether or not the syrup was a part of the rations of the prisoners at Andersonvilie; I think it was in Angint, July or Au gust that the syrup was received from Dnneaai; It might have been later or earlier; I don’t know bow many prisoners there wars in the - stockade at the the time the syrupwse sold ; i know that the prisoner was to ten babitof buying peas, syrup and vegetables j • g -■ ' • “Tarent ~ and similar supplies from, different parties. Tbe conversation between myself and Ducan regarding the syrup waa about half an-hpur before Dnncan left Andereoville; I understood afterwards that he had been arrested ; I don’t know whit month it was; it may have been in November. ■ 8. A. Cook was next called, . ''* ■ Reside in Albany, Georgia; T was on duty at the Andersonvilie prison; went there about the 25th Hay, 1864, and ltft 18th May, 1865; waa a member of the Georgia Reserves; up to the 3d, August did duty round the stockade as sergeant; 'atthat date was de tailed to the commissary department as issuing clerk. The rations issued to the prisoners were >4 lb. peas V, ib. meal, in lieu of K lb. mefite the rations of. the prisoners were considered to be of the same value as that of Confederate soldiers bnt differently divided ; sometimes they is sued 1 Ui lbs. meal, but very seldom ; sometimes the ration was almost wholly bacon, 11,000 or 12,000 lbs. a day. The ration of fresh beef when issued was'l lb ; When there was not a sufficient supply of beef it was divided with syrup; don’t know the proportions. When all three were issued the bacon was only a Small piece, just^ enough to boil with the peas; I don’t think I ever issued to Duncan; the rations: were dfawn by Capt. Wirz and sent to the cook-house. Mr. Duncan, who was in his employ I suppose, issued them. ' Cross^mimined—Wo issued tee rations to wagons; they were then carried to the cook-house; i have every reason to believe that tee rations issued from tee ’eominitriary were delivered at tee nook-house I saw nothing of the wagons after they left the door of the commissary ; the cook-house was distant about three- fourths of a mile by the road. I never saw Dnncan fit the commissary but once as I recollect; don’t know what he wanted ; never beard at Duncan’s com plaining of rations issued to him falling short; the ration I have described was that issued to Dunead by the commissary; I don’t know of any drivers of wag ons being charged with stealing rations while on their way from the commissary to the cook-house. The ra tions were issued by the wagon load ; meat was gen erally weighed loose ; some bacon was issued' in boxes as it was shipped ; sometimes it lost somewhat in weight, sometimes gained rth9 peas ware also some times issued in sseks and tee syrup in barrels.* The Commission here adjourned till Thursday- morning at 10 o’clock. Hew York, April 13.—The Herald’s Toronto special contains the following : Murphy and his associates are kept handcuffed and strongly guarded. Some of our citizens advocate lynching them. The hostility against the prisoners is intense. The Attorney Gen- cral has ordered the Sheriff to permit nobody but offi cials of ths law and the counsel to see tho priuoners. On the night of the arrest the wildest excitement prevailed in Cornwall, and when the bngle sounded the call to arms the volunteers ran to tha rendezvous, loading as they went. They double-quicked to the station, followed by an excited populace. On arriving there, reports were circulated that two companies ol’ the 47th regiment had revolted and taken possession of the town in order to cut their way to Portland. Another report stated that the Fenians had crossed at Ogdensburg and- seized a train, and were advancing on Cornwall by steam. Three companies gurrounded ths train as a guard, and Murphy and party surren dered without resistance. Much -indignation is felt that Ex-Attorney General Mesnald should defend them. Two companies of infantry and a battery of artillery have been]ordered to Cornwall, to prevent any attempt to rescue. Mr. Speedy (not Shea), the Secretary of the Hiber nian Society, was arraigned at the police oourt yester day morning, but no officer from Cornwall having de manded him he was discharged on the originalchgrge and held on information of detective Spencer, charging him with conspiring with Murphy and other traitors to invade the peace of the realm. The examination is to take place on Saturday. An excited crowd of sympa thizers has swarmed about the police court ail day. Speedy is confident of being aoquitted. The stipen, dary magistrate of this district has been ordered by the government to conduct the trial. The authorities here are on the alert, but the Fenians have taken warning and are putting evidence out ot the way as fast as possible. Ottawa dispatches of last evening announce teat the Government has received information to the effect teat several companies of Fenians have left Chicago, ostensibly for Ogdensburg.
