A. Strange Story—Stolen Monet Recovered
Through a Dream.—The Memphis Avalanche says
that last Friday night, in Lagrange, Tennessee, the
store of Mr. Baum wus entered by burglars, the safe
blown open with powder, $2,600 in greenbacks, to
gether with about $300 in gold taken. About $500
of the abstracted money belonged to Mr. Baum, and
the remainodcr to Capt. Reeves, commanding a ne

sent for and wont to lagrange. In the meautimo an
old German, named Reseine, whose cow had bean

In plain light silks one of the color vxtier de lisle
is new, and will be a favorite. I£ is of a Uelicate and
boautitul appearance. The old fashioned colors, such
as olive green and olive brown have been revived for
street dresses.
For full dress, colored satins take the lead. The
cashmere and white satin is soft and beauMful, and is
preferred for bridal dresses in place of white colored
silk.
Poplin grenadine is mostly used for mourning. It
may be worn instead of bombazine, and is ikore dura
ble. Bombazines take the precedence for deepest
^piites. The Attorney General announced that the gov-
mournmg.
Fabrics of goats’ hair will be considerably.used for
spring and summer walking dresses. They are in
stripes and checks, and are also plain. Wfcen with
out any mixture of cotton they are durable, and look
well until they are worn out. The plain will make
good suits for ordinary wear, but stripes and checks
are not desirable in single garments.^.
Organdine muslins are most admired for summer
wear. The new patterns are quite pretty, particularly
those in variegated flowers and delicately formed
l 0 Addresses of thick fabric are gored or partially
gored. Folding under a part of the width avoids the
necessity of a gore in breadth. This style gives a
graceful sweep to the skirt. Thin dresses will not
generally be gored.
The newest pattern in sleeves is the Empire, which
is the coat sleeve, with a wide puffing on the top.
While the coat sleeve is the prevailing style, there is
such a variety of patterns that all tastes can probably
be suited. , . # ,
Points are not much worn. The waists are round,
with or without a basque-finish, as it may suit the
fancy.
Napoleon-Getting Unpopular.—The Paris corres
pondent of the Journal of Commerce writes :
The Emperor was very badly received a few even"
ings ago at the Odeon Theatre, as well as by the crowd
in the street, -which uttered many offensive shouts.
Matters look uncomfortable both at home and abroad,
and altogether there is more public uneasiness than
has long been the case.
New Brunswick—Resignation of the Minister.—

decorated than ever. They are usually lined with
white and have gilt or ivory handies carved in singu
lar de'vicee. Some of black silk are embroidered with
jet and gold; others with sfoel or chrystal beads, the
edge being finished with a cord or narrow fringe.
The old-fashioned, canopy-top parasol is brought out
again, but it has not yet found many purchasers.
There is nothing new in shawls, except square ones
of silk and wool of so light a shade they can be worn
an summer.
The only novelty in shoes is the Congress and prom
enade boot combined. The elastic reaches just above
the ankle joint, aud the top buttons on each side ; the
advantage is that it can be put on much quicker than
one buttoned the entire length. Slippers are trimmed
with elaborate bowe, sometimes embroidered with
gilt beads.
The designs in jewelry are many—some of them
only attractive on account of their oddity in having
numerous angles, curves, and pendants. Ear-rings
and brooch^tre set with briUiauts, pearl and diamonds,
and are usually finished with pendants of some fanci
ful device.
In vulcanite jewelry, which is coming into use, theie
is a new chain intended to be worn over the basquine.
Tiiere are also eets with white onyx, with pear s aud
cold, in curious designs. Chains in this material, fas-

Of tho’present style of hoop, with its great circum

•‘It is said the Empress Eugenie leads the fashions,
but it bsa never been said of her that she appears in
unmanageable attire. American ladies, in' following
what they call the mode, persist in walking tbo
crowded streets and in entering public conveyances
in hoops that require the space of a circle six feet In
diameter. The strange antics of these hoops suggest
the words:
