Washington, April 25.-The President ha* appointed Wade Hampton, e relative of the Confederate General, Postmaster at Pittsburg, removing a radical incum bent. Homocide.—Two yonng men, Thomas and James Mize, of this county, went out together on a fishing excursion on Thursday night of last week, accompa nied by a younger brother about ten years, when a slight misunderstanding occurred between the elder brothers, resulting in the stabbing of Thomas by Jaa. Mize, from which the former immediately expired. Thomasville, Enterprise. Celebration.—A large meeting of the members and friends of the American Protestant Association, in celebration of the 337th anniversary of the great protest of Martin Luther, was held at the Cooper In stitute, New York, or Thursday evening. Addressee were delivered by Key. Dr. Dowling, Rev. Dr. Strong and others. —The Cincinnati Gazette says that pure “Essence of Coffee" la now made in that city out of the “cheapest, dirtiest molasses," which is boiled until it ropes, cooled In pans, and when hard, broken up and pul verized. Ground rye is then mixed with it, after which it is boxed up, each box being sold at eighty cents, and labeled “Pure Essence of Coffee.” —Six merchants of Boston have contributed $80,- 000 towards the new Memorial Hall of Harvard Uni varsity. —The ex-Confederate Comodore J. G. Johnaton has become one of the proprietors and editors of the Mobile Tribune. —Two Congressmen, Senator Fetssnden and Repre sen tative Hubbard, are confined to the house, and it is said hays the varioloid. —The fourtheenth annual convention and festival of the North American Stangerbund will begin at Louis ville on the 23d of July. —10,921 immigrants arrived at New York last week. —Henry F. CITY OF SAVANNAH, 1 Ornoz Clerk of Counoil, > April 23d, 1666. ) The following extracts from the Fire Ordinances of the city of Savannah Is hereby published for the Instruction and information of the citizens thereof. Ordinance 30th Oetober, 1838. Seo. 7. No wooden house, building, shed, fence or structure of wood which encroaches upon any pub lic street, lane, alley, or place within the limits of the city of Savannah and hamlets thereof, shall be considered as embraced within the provisions of the fourth section of this Ordlnauce so Jong as such en croachments continues; that no wooden house, building, shed, or structure of wood, shall be repaired within the fire limits of said city of Savannah and the hamlets thereof, unless permission therefor shall have been previously obtained lrom the City Coun cil, on certificate In writing from the Chief Fireman that such repairs will not amount to rebuilding of such house, building, shed, or structure; and that whenever and wherever the repairs upon any wooden bouse, building, shed or structure shall exceed a moiety thereof, the same shall be held and deemed and considered a rebuild lug under this Ordinance, and the Chief Fire man is hereby prohibited from granting the cer tificate mentioned in this section; and if any person 9hall violate any of the provisions of this section, he or she on conviction before the Police Court, shall bo fined In the sum of one hundred dollars per day for each and every day such house, building, shed or structure shall remain repaired, altered, changed, or Improved In any way or manner whatever, contrary to the provisions of this section. And everv me- chanlc, artificer, or other person, who shall be in strumental In the rebuilding, repairing, altorlng, changing or improving, In any way or manner what ever, any wooden houae, building, shed or structure contrary to the provisions of this seciion, shall, on conviction before the Police Court, he fined in the sum of one hundred dollars; ono half oi the fines Imposed by this section fo be payable to the iurormer, and the other half Into the City Treasury; it being understood that open sheds, mentioned in the second section, are not embraced iu this section. Sec 8. Whenever any house, building, shed or structure hereafter to be' built within the fire limits of the city of Savannah, shall be roofed or covered, if shall be roofed or covered with Blate, tile, tin, or other Incombustible material, and that every person violating the foregoing provision, shall be fined in the sum of one hundred dollars: o e half thereof^to be payable to the informer, and the other half into the City Treasury. SkC. 9. Any wooden building in the condition au thorized by this Ordinance, may be removed from one part of a lot to any other part of the same lot, even though within the fire limits, provided the per mission of Council be first had and obtained. Sec. 10. It shall and may bo lawful for the Mayor and Chief Fireman of the city of Savannah and ham lets thereof to canse any house, building, shed or structure, to ba pulled down or removed whenever they shall consider the same a nuisance or danger ous, or In violation of the Fire Ordinances of said, city; the expense of such pulling down or removal to be paid out of the City Treasnry, except in cases of nuisance or of violation of tile Fire Ordinances, when it shall he borne by the ownor.
