Our villa"-e was thrown into a leve T ot c.\- ci'.emcut on Saturday morning l>y the report that Mr. .Tones was missing, ing returned home w"' 1 '"" PCBLISHE1) FUlt INFORMATION Of the citizens of Savannah. hy order oftawesolu | torn of council passed April 1 th, 18Sfi. He then mounted ids liorso'.and rode off. Some twenty or thirl v minutes thereafter, two pistol shots were heard and a woman s screams, but no notice was taken of it at the lime.. The next morning his family not finding him in bed, and his horse returning without him, the eil- iz.cns turned out en nut sue to search ior him. Mr. Bnmtiy—an employee of Mr.- Jones, rode lip to the house of Airs. Sarah Mathis ; (a tenant ot Mr. .Times,) he having heard the pistol shots the night before, lie called Mrs. M. out, and asked her it she had seen Mr Jones the night before. She replied that she had not seen him since one o’clock Saturday: but her pale, haggard countenance aud the violent trembling satified Mr. Brantley that Mr. Jones was dead, and that she was cog nizant of it- A party was immediately sent to the house of Mrs. Mathis and a close search inst.iUi^ilJw A- large pool of clotted blood was discovered at the corner ot thc- ynrd fence, covered over with a board aud rails, and a trail was iound as though some heavy body had been dragged through tin- leaves. Tharfrail was followed, and about, one hundred yards in front of the house a mound of eartli was discovered, which proved to be the grave of our unfortunate ielhnv-citizen. Oue shoulder and tlie tail of j liis coat were visible. He was taken up,and ! it was discovered that he had come to liis j death by a pistol ball. He was struck in the lclt eye. the ball ranging across the head di agonally and lodging against the skull* hack of his right ear. The pistol must have hft-n within leu or twelve inches of his lace when fin d, as liis face was blackened by powdci, j and the wound was large enough to have admitted a small-sized hen egg. Upon | closer examination, a second wound was found upon the left shoulder, which was but i a flesh wound. A negro woman testified that he was shot ; by Siiudrach Croom, and the evidence was ! point blank in fixing upon him the charge ot wilful murder. Mrs. Mathis testified. Ilia! Mr. .Tones had shot first at. Croom. She had , buried the pistol ot Mr. Jones, which was found with lmt one barrel discharged, and tne evidence was satisfactory dial Jones had : di.-charged that, one at his will- Tne n^egro woman swore that Croom hud forced her to assist him in dragging off the j body of Jones, and that Mrs. Mathis had taken her with her to turn loose Mr. .Tones’ horse, cover up and erase, the blood itnd stains, and bury the pistol; and also eon- cocte.d a tale.lor her and the negro to tell fi. clear Groom f/oni the suspicion of being tin murderer. The evidence showing Iho premeditation of the murder was conclusive, and the cor- j oner's jury gave a verdict of -‘guilty of wil- | lul murder ' against Sbadr.neh Croom, and of accessory after the tact against Mrs. Sarah Mathis. There has as yet been no extenuating evi dence on the part of Croom, as his trial be fore the civil authorities'has not yet com menced, and popular feeling runs strongly against the accused, especially as Mr. .Tones was robbed ot Ids watch and money, and from the brutal manner in which he war- thrust, lace downward, in the shallow aud narrow grave. Much sympathy is felt to wards Mrs. Mathis, who is a sister in-law ol ('room’s, and who is connected with some ol ; our most ir-specl,able I.unifies. H r idnncc i Iron with the murder itsell is doubted, and 1 her efforts to conceal the crime is considered by some as the result of a weak mind and the | serious fright she laid experienced. Mi.
