Purse’s Directory—We have received a copy of Purse’s Directory of the city of Savannah, andUnd it a reliable and valuable hand-book. It was hardly to be expected that a work of such magnitude, under taken without the assistance of any recent compilation of tho kind, and at a time when the business commu nity had scarcely settled, into form and void from the chaos into which it was thrown by the war, should have been entirely free from defects. Nevertheless, the directory is full enough for aU practical purposes, and the enterprising publishers will receive, as they deserve, tho thanks of the Savannah pub lic. In addition to the business directory, much useful information is introduced, including lists of tho officers of the various organizations of the city, of the city government, banks, courts, fire de partment, masonic lodges, publio schools, Ac., toge ther with the Custom House, wharfage, drayage and pilotage rates, quarantine regulations, internal reve nue schedule, 4c. The book is conveniently indexed, and is gotten up in a neat and durable style. The volume contains the cards of many of our lead ing business houses, a feature which adds to its value as a hand-book for the counting room. Tilt Southern Express Company. jj-.theru Express Company, as will be soen, lijo.r advertisement to bo found in another , having increased their facilities for transpor- „«ra new prepared to receive and transmit , entrusted to their care at greatly reduced rates inland route, from Georgia to Baltimore, Phila sud New York, with but one change of cars. ,:::ou to this they continue to ship goods as fjro by sea, on none but first-class ships. . , company has beou in existence about fifteen The wide extant of country which it traverse-! Stbalixq Vegetables.—Robin Green (it should be Robbing Greens), a freedman, charged with stealing cabbages, 4c., from the garden of Mr. Eppstein. on Lover’s lano, was committed to jail yesterday by Justice Staley, to awaita hearing, which will take place this afternoon. We hope that Green will be accom modated with the full benefit of the law, as all the gar deners who have places on the outskirts of the city have been heavy losers for some time from the system of plundering their vegetables at night which prevails there. As this is the first party we have heard of being caught, he should receive such punishment as will tend to break up this midnight marauding. A Suspicious Character.—A. Gourdim , a negro, was arrested by tho police about three o’clock on Sun day morning, for loitering about the magazine and en- tering premises in that locality by jumping the fences. The prisoner stated that he was endeavoring to get to the steamer Planter, on board which boat he stated he was employed; but loafing about the magazine and jumping fences showed clearly that ho was looking for something other than tho Planter. He was therefore turned over to the Chief detective for an investigation of his case, and if found to be a suspicious character to bo placed ou the chain gang for thirty days. Auction Sales.
