Studying Politics Under Difficulties.
An old farmer iu the interior of Ohio writes to the
Cincinnati Commercial, amoug other readable mat
ters, the following, which is too good to be lost, and
too true to be forgotten:
Oue day, some time ago, John had been to tbe sta
tion for me and brought home a paper that was Ailed
with a great many speeches that had been made
about a bill that our President had seen fit to disap-
^ • ^’ell, I took the paper to my corner, and,
although it was an »w-v fir y «mall print and tried my
eyes very much I read it evy., b , t . My ood W1 / t
got tired of my forever sitting theit>, poring over
those long ‘-borations,” as she termed them, 8a id
that 1 would do well to be reading my Bible more, ane
such productions less. “Wife,” said 1, “the kingdom
of heaven isn’t in any particular danger just now, but
my country is.” Alter that she said nothing more
about it to mo.
But the more 1 read in that paper the more bothered
I became. 1 read a long speech by Mr. Henry Beechoi,
who seems to know so much about everything but
divinity, and I liked it because he supported our Pre
sident, and our President, I thought, must be in a
very trying position now-a-days.
Then I was upset by Mr. Phillips, who went into
Mr. B. like I have seen little boys attack hornets' nests
in the winter time. “If such men differ,” said I, “who
will decide ?” I had always before thought these two
would agree though the earth split.
Then I turned over the leaf wrong and commencod
on the latter part of somebody else’s speech. I liked
it so much tliut 1 read on and on until I finished it.
“Surely,” said 1 to myself, “surely we have got one
good and true man in the land.” The tone of tho
speech reminded me of the good old fashioned “fare
well address of General Washington, and I thanked
God and took courage.
Then 1 hunted up the beginning of the speech, and
could not believe my eyes when I saw Alex. H. Ste
phens' name to it. 1 thought that it must be Thad-
deus Stevens, us he was “Union,”■ though the composi
tion was very much unlike the style of the gentleman
from Pennsylvania;
“Wife,” said I, “look here; my glasses are a little
dim; i9 that Alex.^H. ?”
“Alex. H.,” said she.
“Not Thaddeus,” said I.
“Not Thaddeus,” said she.
”ls the last name spelt with a «v* or with a ‘ph?’ M
“Pfa, said she, “ and what are you reading rebel
speeches for, J’ft like to know. He's the Slice Presi
dent of the Confederacy, and ought to be banging to a
sour uppie ireo instead of being loose and making
borations.” 6
[My wife i6 a little nebulous about names and titles,
but is a thorough-going Union woman, and hates
rebels with a periect hatred^ She was chairman of mu
aid society during the-war, and many a time I've
waked up in the night and found her still sitting by
the dying fire knitting socks for the poor soldiers who
were "H-lj mg out on the cold ground with nothing
but their knapscats and pontoons to cover them ”1
Then I found that the speech was addressed to the
Georgia Legislature, and 1 knew that “Thad” would
never take the trouble to tell erring people bow to so
right, though he is great on abusing them when they
go wrong. J
The bogus Senate of Tennessee has up for disous-
sion u bill to indemnify “loyal” citizens tor losses sus
tained during the war. The bill has passed its second
reading. Should this bill pass, the friends of the
measure estimate that it will saddle that understood
State with au additional debt of forty millions!
The “loyal” in that State are unfortunate to be those
who at some time or other during the war, sought
^nt Confederate government; but who
crept back belore the close of the war, and after its
termination joined the uew noni
