Ruskf.ll, Clerk. SaTanuah, May 9th, 1866. ILaYors Court.—Jack Brown (colored), was brought before His Honor yesterday morning, charged with violating city ordinance by firing a pistol; aiao with seriating an officer. Fi^rn tho testimony of a witness m the ease, it appears that Brown had fired a pistol ta the wharf upon which witness was employed as a watchmxn, and had refused to leave tho wharf wlu^ ordered. He also used very abusive language to the •watchman, and struck him when he attempted to put ium oil the wharf. The prisoner stated that he was merely examining his pistol when it accidentally dis charged, and that ho was sitting on a wood pile look ing 101 a job, when the watchman ordered him on. He ac&nowledged the abusing ond striking the watch man, end tried to justify himself in so doing: but as the point could not be seen, lie was sentenced to thirty oiye iebor on the streets, and to forfeit his pistol. Eieai Denton (coloredi, was ai rested about 1 o'clock oa Wednesday morning^ with a bag in his possession containing a ham and some tobacco. Ho staled that he Lad purchased the articles on the other side of tho river, but as there are no etores oa that side of the strean, he was turned over to the river police to have :be natter investigated. Robert White (colored), was brought up for driving aboiie aijd wagon through York street lane in viols- ticno! city ordinance. The prisoner stated that ho •us. an * mg vege tables to market, and beiug rather late thought that by driving thvough the lane he would iukt greater speed. Uia Honor stated that the lanes tad recently been graded, but had been utterly de stroyed by wagons passing over tho dirt piled in them, and scattering it so as to make it necessary to have the work done over again. The prisoner was fined in costs, and if caught driving through the lanes again to be placed at work on the streets. Thoetexnth Annual Repost of the Board of Managers of the Protestant Episcopal Orphans* Home.—The Boird of Managers of the*'Protestant Epia. copal Orphans’ Home” respectfully submit to the Bis hop of the Diocese, and to all~who feel an interest in the Orphans’ cause, their thirteenth annual report: The bright vernal light of the glorious Easter morn yet sheds its lustre o’er us, and the triumphant strains of its hallowed anthems Btill vibrate upon the ear, kindling our hearts anew to deeds of loving charity, as memory delight* to recall the story of redeeming love so lately commemorated, while the lingering rays and echoing strains remind ns, that the duties of the past year are ended, and that wc have entered upon the thirteenth year of our existence under the sheltering care of our holy Church. With grateftil humility do we acknowledge the watchful providence of an Almighty Father, who in the midst of the destitution and prostration which had overwhelmed our city, in common with our coun try, has mercifully shielded us from all privations at tendant upon the sad condition of affairs; inclining the hearts of all to minister to our necessities, so that the despondency and gloom which were naturally expe rienced, melted away, and trusting to that sovereign care, which amid so many trials and apprehensions, has ever been our refuge and support, we are enabled to look forward calmly, nay, even hopefully, to the fu ture. The number ofc children reported at our last anniial meeting was 19, since that period one has died, eight have been romoved, nnd three added, making the number at present in the home, thirteen. Applications for admission are numerous, but the number of subscribers having been sensibly dimin ished in consequence of the embarrassed condition of the city, the financial state of the Treasury restricts us greatly in responding favorably to these constant appeals. Mrs. Bennet still continues to exercise the united offices of matron and governess. The monthly reports of the Board testify unanimously to the order and re gularity which characterizes her rule. Under her juincious, kind sway, the children thrive both men tally and morally, and our thanks are due to her for the kind, unwearied watchmlness, which she so gently and unceasingly exercises over them, render ing the institution a home of love in its deepest, truest sense. With the exception of the death of Georgia Ann Crawford, which occurred in April, 1S65, and some very light cases of sickness, the children, we grate- i fully'record, have enjoyed most excellent health. And here we desire to renew our thanks to Mr. Lincoln and to Dr. Yonge, the kind benefactors of the Home, who never weary in well doing, but always cheerfully and promptly respond to our demands, realizing the double blessing of charity: “It blesses him that gives and him that takes.” It would seem almost futile to urge the claims of the Home upon a people who have been so impoverished and stricken by the calamities of the past, but it speaks well for the generous hearts of our noble citizens, that though reduced themselves, thoy have never suf fered our little household to feel the biting stings of poverty, and their hearts have abounded in deeds of loving kindness, perhaps more richly than of yore. But while fully alive to the sad circumstances of the hour, we may and do ask each individual Christian to use their utmost exertions to save this Hook, of their adoption from languishing, and to aid us in rearing a building worthy of the object, in which to shelter the Orphans .confided to our care. Let each give of his ability that each may experience the divine assurance of our great Exemplar, “In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of* them my brethren, ye have done it to unine.” B. When the raffle vas over he banded her six dollars, and said that an cilter person had stolen the fifty dollars. Several wit- tfceee# in the case having testified to a contradictory Eatenient, and the court being fully convinced in the ■aitter, the prisoner was romanded back to jail to -” l ‘t his trial beforo the Superior Court. A Delioutful Trip.—The steamer Lizzie Baker carried about three or four hundred of the happiest people we have met for some time on' a pleasure ex cursion down the river yesterday afternoon. This new feature is proposed in order to disci pline the company in the matter of managing promptly their new steamer at any fire that may occur. The public will be interested to *eb"4rhat the “Mets.” can do, and whether their new apparatus can play over at one story building or not. It \rill be recollected that athe recent trial the steamer took the water from a hy- drout selected on account of its-‘Size (ths smallest), by Chief Firemau Casey, to test tlio mpoted point—“that no hydrant could supply a steam fire engine with the requisite amount of water.” The “Mets.” solved the problem by taking the water from this hydrant, and throwing a stream through an inch nozzle one hun dred and ninety feet. Also a few transactions in middlings, New York classi fications at 30c. Augusta Cotton Market. j Augusta, May 8, Cotton—Since our last weekly report advices of >jd @ld advance ill the Liverpool market have been re ceived, which have given more stability to our mar ket. During Monday there was what may be called a fair demand, at prices ranging from 26 to 22c for middling to good middling, closing unsettled and. ex cited, in consequence of,an advance, in foreign mar kets. This morning the inquiry was less, the market for the week, however, closing at an advance of two cents per pound on all grades. The late news from England has intimidated buyers, leaving bnt a mode rate demand at the advancing prices, while holders arc film in consequence of the improved condition of Northern and Liverpool markets. - Reports of the prospqulve crop are unfavorable, and should such ru mors prove to be' correct, the old crop must neces sarily rise in the market, and closely approximate its fortacr higher price. Hence, the tenacity of holders, and their reluctance to soil at present low prices. FactoxtvjGoods.—Augusta factory goods have de clined one cent.
