The Daily Mews and Herald. SAVAlhfAH. THURSDAY. MAY 10. I860. IN GENERAL. Horace Greely, at the late Tribune testival on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the establishment of that journal, said : “Henry J. Raymond, present proprie tor of the New York Times, was one of my first em ployes ; he was very useful to the paper in its in- cipienc.v ; he was the only man whom I ever found it necessary to admonish that he worked too hard.” —There is a case of ancient leprosy in New Orleans ±a yotjnt; girl of good standing. One of her feel has already dropped off, and one arm is nearly gone. The Boat abinent physicians pronounce her disease lep rosy. It is not contagioua. This is the first instance at thakjborrible disease we have ever been called on to —Sherman left St Louis last week on an ex tensive tour along the Eastern termini of the Pacific- Railroad. He will organize military corps, guards, engiiifterg, etc. —A murderer named Pestb, who poisoned his wife near Auburn, N. Y., about three months ago, commit ted suicide last week by cutting his throat with a razor. -A young lady in Mississippi writes in the Macon "Roac.in that she is determined never to marry a man if she Stills out she has his first love. Frst love, she pays, never lasts long. Governor Orr, of South Carolina, and other promi nent citizens of Charleston, propose the common school system for colored children in that city. —An Irishman, in Baltimore, being ordered not to roll his wheelbarrow on the side-walk, deliberate^ shouldered it, and lawfully obstructed the way a good deal more than ho had while acting unlawfully. ■ —A brilliant genius is writing for the Kosciusko Star, a novclletee entitled “l’he Georgia Gal; or, Who Stole my Goobers ?” —The late Sylvanus Packard, of Boston# bequeathed Tufts College, Mass., the sum of $350,000. —The two Hebrew congregations of Charleston. " STATE ITEMS. An afternoon and night school has been opened in Atlauta for the beneht of young gentlemen whose business engagements deny them the privilege of at tending school the whole day. •'Bdl Arp” has yielded to the solicitation of his friends, and is about issuing a volume of Ills letters. The Etowah Bridge is being rapidly reconstructed. A literary society has been organized in Atlanta. The Indies of Athens decorated the soldiers’ graves on the 4th iLsL. Toll is now collected from foot passengers over the bridge at Augusta. The first train with passengers direct for Savannah left Macon oji Saturday morning. The cars connect with the stages at No. 14, and passengers reach Sa vannah at G:35 next morning. The night travel is all bv railroad. Tho steam mill of Messrs. Littlefield & Brinson, of Burke county, was burned a few nights since. In cendiarism. Progress of Manufacturers. The C hicago Republican says : “ More than forty new factories, the majority o* them, we believe, for the production of woolen goods* are to be erected in Illinois this summer. The capita^ mi ployed in them will exceed a million of dollars- The benefit of these new undertakings will be great to all classes of the community, but the interest which will be most profited by them will be that of agricuh ture.” The people of Illinois appreciate the advantages which a multiplicity of manufacturing establishments will confer upon their state. The Southern States will be compelled to manufacture more of what they use than has ever been done yet. In reconstructing the industry of the South' this object should be kept steadily in view. The manufacture of cotton is that which should engage the attention of the Southern people. It can be made more profitable than any other branch for tin; reason that the cotton is grown at the door of the factory. Wt» have some figures which will demonstrate the profitableness of cotton manufac turers, to which we wish to direct the attention of capitalists in the Smith: COST OF HEAVY BROWN SHEETING, LIKE APFLETON A’S. pound of cotton 40 ^Vcar aud tear, 5 per cent. Waste 20 per cent.. 10 Weaving and labor. 20 per cent - 08 Freight charges aud commission on 25c per yard, 3% per cent 02.48 Government tax 0 per cent, on sales at 25c per yard 04.27 Cost of 2.85 yards 64 1 ic which, at 25c per yard is G>Xc per pound profit on every pound, of cotton made into these goods COST OF FINE BROWN COTTONS LIKE PEPEBELL B. 1 pound of cotton Wear and tear, 5 per cent. Waste 20 per cent... Weaving and labor, 27 per cent ._ Charges, commissions, etc,, on 22*^0 per yard, 3*.; per cent Government tax, 0 per ceut., on sales at 22 t 2 c per yard .. 40- 10.80 5.85 70c Cost of 3,85 to 3,90 * which, at 224£c per yard, is 273*c per pound profit on every pound of cotton made into these goods. COST OF FINK BLEACHED MUSLINS, LIKE NEW. YORK MILLS, AND WAMSUTTA. 1 pound of cotton „ 45 Wear and tear of machinery,.etc.,, 10 per cent.. 4.50 Waste. 20 per cent 9 Weaving aud labor, 45 per cent 20.25 Charge*, commissions, et$., on sales of 60c per yard, per cent : .6.73 Government tax, 6 per cent, on sales at 60c yer yard r. 11.50 97c Cost of 3.85 yards which, at 50c per yard, is 95%c per pound profit on every pound of cotton made into these goods. This calculation is made upon the basis of cotton at somewhat higher figures than it commands at present, or will probably command next year# or perhaps in any Juture year: but it will show how very profitable this branch of manufacture must continue to be. If New England manufacturers can make such heavy !»rofit8 on the manufacture of cotton which has to bo transported from the South, bow much more profita ble may its manufacture be made in the South. A Full Jury of Negroes,.—A case hvs been tried before a ;ull jury ot negroes at Murfreesboro’. Tenn. A freodmau threw a stone at another freedman, who retaliated in kind, striking his assailant in the head and inflicted a severs wound. The injured man died, and the matter was brought before the Freedmen’s Bureau, and a trial wns had, with twelve freedraen for jury. The ac cused was diechurged. The Internal Revenue Bill.—From tlie provis ions of the new internal revenue bill it will be seen that it reduces the aggregate amount of taxation about one-fifth, amountingiu the aggregate to about sixty or seventy millions. It relieves many articles, of prime necessity, and exempts many raw materials used in manufactures. The proposed tax of five per cent on cotton is the only serious discrimination against Southern industry, and the argument is used that the tax will fall on tk ,e cousumer, aud that the producer will not derive a’jy less profit hv reason of the tax. This argument we believe to be fallacious, and the result will be that tbe distressed portion of the country will contribnt e to the public revenue a sum entirely disproportion^ ate. N !
