He translates Henry Clay’s popular title of ’’The Millboy of the Slashes," to mean the millboy of the scar, supposing Mr. Clay to have received in the early part of his life a alash from some sbsrp weapon, which left a scar upon Mi features. The common causes are said to bo drunkenness and religions en- thusiasm. — The 14th of July is the time fixed for the Bailing of the new Atlantic Cable expedition. —Count Casteleone arrived in the Scotia, on a mis sion from the Kin*? of Italy. —The Charlestonians are complaining that they aro suffering from a purgatory of mosquitoes. _ Edwin Forrest is in San Francisco. —The Pozuanski brothers of Charleston, are per forming in Louisville. —A lot of Irishmen cleared out a lot of negroes in Indianapolis on Friday night. —Gen. Grant was presented with seven hundred and eighty boxes of cigars in one day. —A heathen temple has been purchased at Pekin, China, the idols removed, and a missionary hospital commenced. —President Lincoln died on the fourth Wniversary of the day on which he issued his proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteers—April 15, 1861. — The hack writers in Washington now charge members of Congress from $25 to $100 for writing their speeches. — Wm. B. Shoemaker, sheriff of Gentry county, Mississippi, committed suicide recently, because he could not get his tax accounts to come out square. —A proposal to erect a 6tatue to Meyerbeer in Ber lin has been overthrown in that city on the ground that the composer was a Jew. —The retreating Finnegans come home richer than they went. Many of them started out with nary a rod, but they all return bringing the green-back. —C. C. Clay, lately released from imprisonment at Fortress Monroe, arrived at' Hunts villa on the 27th ult. - — The boys of Norfolk, Va. f were admitted into a circus stepping in that city at the price of one oat a piece. The animals are said to bo the highly relished food of the lions. —D. C. Bailard. of Mobile, has reached the peni tentiary in Nashville, under sentence of eight year’s imprisonment, by a military commission, for stealing Government cotton. —The navigation of the Western rivers is in dan ger of being impeded by sunken steamers. Forty- four have gone down in Red river alone since last June. —The old Capitol buildiug and grounds at Washing ton were put up at auction recently. The only offer made was $6,000, and as the limit was 24,000, the property was withdrawn. —Said a crazy woman, of a penurious, stingy man, an officer of the church, we regret to say, “Do you see that man ? You could blow his soul through a hum ming bird’s quill into a mosquito’s eye, and the mos quito wouldn’t wink.” —Here is the pithiest sermon ever preached: “Our ingress in life is naked and bare ; our progress through lift* is trouble and care; our egress out of it we know not where; but, doing well here, we shall do well there. ” ‘ —General James H. Lane, of North Carolina, has been tendered tfee position of Professor of Mathe matics and Superintendent of the North Carolina Col lege at Mount Pleasant. —Miss Fanny M. Dayton, in whose head William E. Russ put three balls last December, in Brooklyn, in a fit of madness produced by love, has entirely re covered. However, hard-headed girls arejiot an un common thing. At a dinner party in New York on Tuesdy night, Mr. Greeley stated that since the commencement of the Tribune in 1841, something like five hundred daily newspapers have been started in the city of JZevt York, of which not more than five survive. — A Portland steamer was found to be going astray, on a recent trip from Boston, owing to a deviation of her compass. The deviation, it w^s found, was caused by the ?teel hoop-skirt of a young lady who was in the pilot house, and on her retiring the compasB resumed its proper position. —Some of th^Bostonians are trying to escape the cholera by rushing into and crowding thus suburban towns and villages. Everyintog in thus shape of a dwelling bouse for a radius of twoenty miles around Boston has been rented for the season, and as high as $250 per month is paid for a furnished house of. ordi nary size from May until September. — The small pox has disappeared from Quincy, Florida. Beaufort Items. The Beaufort (S. C.) New South says: — The recent wind storm, wc are sorry to say, has materially injured the cotton crops in exposed situa tions. On Port Royal and St. Helena Islands the sand drifting against the tender plants has cut them entirely off in many places. One planter on St. Helena reports a ; lot* of over thirty acres, and another of over fifty' 'acres, all of which will have to be planted over again.. The following letter has been received, by Capt.
