When Captain King discovered that the steamer was leaking he immediately turned back and ran her on a Band bar opposite Fort Fisher. The Lizzie Baker had a number of passengers and a large freight The steamer Emilie was dispatched to her assistance and took oil the passengers and their Baggage, and also all the freight with the exception of some hay. The steamer was sunk to her decks *et high water yesterday afternoon. Arrangement, have been made to send the steam fire engine down at an early hour to pump her out, when she will be brought up to the city for repairs. The Lizzie baker was commanded by one of the ablest and most successful captains on the route, and steered by two of the best pilots running between Florida and this city, but as the cribs near tbe obstructions are continually shifting tilth the tide, it is almost impossible for a boat to pass over tbe same place twice withoat striking or running against some thing. SECOND DAY- [Erponed for tho News and Herald ’ s Council convened at 10 o'clock, yesterday morn- iNFAirriciDX—Horrible Dsvelcwmenis—We learn from a gentleman who arrived from Thomasville last svening that a case of Infanticide, surrounded with oircumstances of a most revolting character bad come to light in that town. On Tuesday last, the body of a colored infant was rooted out by hogs from its burial place by the side of a road in an unfrequented part of the village. Upon examination it was found that the scull of the infant had been fractured by a violent blow. Suspicion was at once fastened upon a colored girl who was known to have given birth to a child which had suddenly disappeared. Tbe woman was at once arreBted by the City Marshal, although she strongly protested that she was innocent, and lodged in jail. For a while she still persisted in declaring that she knew nothing of the matter, but she was finally induced to make the confession that the child was hers, but that it had been murdered by her mother—not by herself. Upon being interrogated still further the girl confessed that she had previously had two children, each of whom was put out of the way by her mother in the same horrible manner. Search was at once made for the mother but she had disappeared, and at last ac counts the perpetrator of the three infanticides was still unarrested. Cleared. Steamer Kate.
