The Burning of Columbia—The Letter of
Geti, Wade Hampton in the Sentae,
Mr. Johnson read the following letter from Gen.
M ade Hampton, on tho burning of Columbia, South
Carolina:
Wild Woods, Miss., April 21, 1865.
To Hon. Rtcerdy Johnson, United Slates Senate:
Sir—A few days ago I saw In the published pro-
> codings of Congress that a petition from Benjamin
nawies, of Columbia, South Carolina, asking for com
pensation for the destruction of his house by the
federal army in February, 1865, had been presented
to the Senate, accompanied by a letter from MaJ. Gen.
Sherman.
In tills letter General flherman uses the following
language:
" fiio citizens of Columbia sei fire to thousands of
osl6s of cotton, rolled out into the streets, and which
were burning before we entered Columbia. I, my
self. was in the city us early as 9 o'clock, and I saw
thc.c- fires, and knew that efforts were made to ex
tinguish them, but a high and strong wind kept them
alive
“I gave no orders for the burning of your city, but.
on the contrary, the conflagration refluited from the
great imprudence of cutting the cotton bales, whereby
the contents were spread to the wind, so that it be j
came an impossibility to arrest the fire.
"I saw in your Columbia newspapers the printed or
der of Gen. Wade Hampton, that on the approach of
the Yankee army all the cotton Bhould thus bo burned,
and from what I saw myself l have no hesitation in
saying that he was tho cause of the destruction of your
city."
ibis same charge, made against me by Gen. Sher
man. having been brought before the Senate of the
United States, I am naturally most solicitous to vindi
cate myself before the same tribunal. But my State
has no representative in that body. Those who should
be her constitutional representatives and exponents
there are debarred the right of entrance into those
hulls There are none who have the right to speak
for the South, none to participate in tho legislation
which governs her, none to impose the taxes she is
called upon to pay, and none to vindicate her sons
rroui misrepresentation, injustice or slander.
Under theBe circumstances, I appeal to you, In the
confident hope that you will use every effort to see
that justice is done in this matter.
I deny, emphatically, that any ootton was fired in
Columbia by my order.
1 deny that the citizens “set fire to thousands of
bales rolled out into the streets.”
1 deny that any cotton was on fire when the Federal
troops entered the city.
I most respectfully ask of Congress to appoints
• ommlttee charged with the duty of ascertaining
and reporting all the facts connected with the dea-
trucUosof Columbia, and thus fix upon the proper
author of that enormous crime the Infamy he richly
deserves.
I urn willing to submit the case to Any honest tribu
nal. Before any such f pledge myself to prove that I
gave a positive order, by direction ot General Beaure
gard, that no cotton should be fired; that no ope bain
was on fire when General Sherman'e tropg took pos
session of the city; that he promised protection to
the city, and that in spite of his solemn promise he
the ettv tn the ground, deliberately, systemat
ically and atrociously.
- nmoi earnestly request that €eqgf*]fs
may take prompt and efficient measures to. invfehv irate
this matter lully. Not only 1s tills due to thets selves
and to the reputation of the United States hi- „„ tmt
also to justice and truth.
Trusting that you will pardon me tor tabling you,
I am, very respectfully, your obedient
Hampton. •
Mr. Sherman said he could not W jOW this charge of
this moBt imprudent rebel again'' ,, u,, whole army to
be entered upon tbe records 'without some answer.
The charge of General SheT man in relation to the
burning of Columbia, was official report and was
fully sustained by report^ 0 f other officers. General
Sherman did not chary,, that Wade Hampton gave an
explicit order on the ’subject; but simply that his pre
vious order In relation to the burning of cotton, Ac.,
led to that result. Mr. Sherman read from various
official reports 'to oonfirm the charge against General
Hampton.
Mr. Jc esgtnden objected to the practice of tifcfrig up
the time of the Senate in reading letters addressed not
to the Senate, but to individual Senators, and espe
cially on matters pertaining to private controveisies
between persons not members of the Senate.
Mr. Johnson moved the reference of Gen. Hamp
ton's letter to the Committee on Military Affairs, or he
was willing to have it laid on the table.
Mr. Fessenden hoped it would not be referred er
ordered to he on the table, but that the Senate would
refuse to reoeive it.
Mr. Counts* said that a man who would attempt to
destroy tbe Government of the United States would
certainly not hesitate to burn a city. He hoped tbe
letter of^V&de Hampton would not be received or con
sidered at all by the Senate.
Mr. Johnson then withdrew the letter of General
Hampton.
Thasxs to.the Federal Abht and Navt.—The
{resident on the 6th Inst, signed the following :
“Reoslvea bp the Senate ana Bouse of Represen
tatives of the, United States <B America in con
gress Assembled, That it ie the duty and privilege of
Congress to express tho gratitude of the nation to the
officers, soldiers and seamen of the United States, by
whose valor and endurance on the land and oh the
sea, tbe rebellion has been crushed, and its pride and
its power have been humbled ; by whose fidelity of
the cause of freedom the government of the people
has been preserved and maintained; and by whose
orderly return from the fire and blood of civil
war to the peaceful pursuits of private life, the ex
ulting and ennobling Influence of free inaUtuhon*
upon a nation baa been singularly manifested to the
world.
Great For at Mobile.—The fire at Mobile on the
30th ult., was confined to a circuit of three squares
around the market’bouse, chiefly raging on the trian
gular square Dauphin and Spring SOI. known aa ths
Bell Tavern Place, and the two squares above Dauphin
and Conti, above Soott and between WUkiason street.
The number of buildings destroyed ie estimated at
upward of forty, and fully one hundred tenementooc-
copied by families. Bobbery was carried on to a fear-
loi extent, until two companies of the 15th regiment
!?? ne Mul Pf ot *cted the property. Goode
