All the furniture, trunks, chests, bed clothing, wearing apparel and greenbacks of these un fortunate creatures were carried away. From the ■ucceding Saturday to Monday the remaining freed people were engaged in searching for and burying the dead. Trees were also up-rooted and blown great distance. Saxton’s village is situated about one mile back the city of Beaufort. It Is also reported that a large dwelling house __ Mr. Benj. Capers, of Lady's Island, was blown down and the trees on the enclosure up-rooted. We give the above facts, says the Index, as stated by “ the reliable freedman,”—whether quite so fear ful a disaster occurred we probably will not be able ascertain. of Her Messrs. Present* for Mrs. Davis—State Husband's Health. Fortress Monroe, Monday, May 7, 1890. A gentleman arrived here yesterday from Rich, mond with several presents for Mrs. Davis, amoDg which was a black silk dress and other articles of comfort. The casemates In the Fortress which have been selected for the accommodation of Sirs. Davis are being fitted up in a comfortale though not lnxu rions manner. Gen. Miles has lately issued an or der detailing an officer in place of the officer of the day, whose other duties prevented it, to escort Mrs. Dsvis, at stated hours, to Caroll Hall, where Mr. Davis is confined. Since the arrival of Mrs. Davis hero she has ten derly looked after the failing state of her hnsband health, and entertains, it is said, serious fears of his ultimate recovery should he be attacked during the coming summer by one of his periodical spells of in. termittent fever or congestive chills. The general health of Mr. Davis remains compar atively good, and it is only the long and weary tin. prlsonment that he has been subjected to, and the many anxious fears and doubts which have weighed so heavily upon his miud, that has produced the very noticeable change in his appearance during the pest year. Some of the lady friends of Mrs. Dsvis, residing in Baltimore, are making up various articles as presents, which will be shortly forwarded here for her use during her sojourn in the Fortress. Mrs. Davis had been to Norfolk to get groceries, etc., to keep house at the fort, and the people had showered upon her presents of all kinds, aud sent her the choicest boquets. Meitins of the American Anti-Slavery Society —A Speech from Wendell Phillips.—The thirty- third anniversary meeting of the American Anti-Sla very Society, lays the N. Y. News of the 8th. opened its sessions yesterday morning, at the usual haunt of that society in Union Square. The attendance waa neither very numerous nor very select, the audience being composed largely of negroes and mulattoes. Among the white people present were Mr. Wendell Phillips—who presided—Mr. Theodore Tilton, Lucre- tia Mott, Suaan B. Anthony and Mrs. Stanton. The Rev. Geo. Hepworth, of Boston, opened the proceed ings with prayer, after which Mr. Phillips read sev eral letters from Mr. Sumner, Chief Justice Chase aud other*. The following are the more noticeable points in the speech of Wendell Phillips. He read a resolution set ting forth tbat the scone of the late war was ohanged - that it was transferred from Lee in arms to the White House. He believed in universal enfranchisement and universal amnesty, although he was not opposed to punishing rebels. Tbs disfranchisement which Congress is now discussing but binds men more to gether, and by the teuderest of all ties—a common misfortune. Why disfranchise men ? We can over come Jeff. Davis and a thousand like him by our great weapon, justice. He did not quite believe that the South feared uegro suffrage; voting once a year would not frighten them. President Johnson knows that when he took the office, comprehending the underlying principles, he belled the people by his conduct He knows that it the great Republican party remains as one man until 1868, but one man can bo elected President, and that man is Gen. Grant. President Johnson and Wm. H. Seward set themselves against this and endeavored to break up the dominant party in the hope that some of the fragments might float around them. The Atlantic Tkleorafh.—A Northern paper says that Mr. Cyrus W. Field returned from Europe in the steamship Persia, after having launched another great expedition to lay tbo Atlantic Telegraph cable. This is his thirty-sixth voyage across'th6 ooean on this en terprise, to which he has devoted the last twelve years ot his life. Such indomitable perseverance de serves suocess, and, we trust, will command it. All the preparations are going forward with the greatest rapidity. They are manufacturing over a hundred miles of cable a week. Mr. Field remains her but six weeks, and returns to kngland to join the Great Eastern, which Is expected to sail the last of June. All connected with the former expedition feel sure of success this time. They hope to have telegraphic communication established between the two hemis pheres In the month of July.
