Education of the Negro.
The necessity of educating the negro is not to be
questioned. His position as a freeman, a creature of
his own volition, no longer subject to our own, de
mands it. He will be but a useless and troublesome
member of society iu his present state of ignorance.
That ignorance was harmless, perhaps beneficial while
in- was a slave, and while his life and conduct was
controlled by another and a superior intellect and ; ^1’AIK OK GEORGIA—LIBERTY OOU.NTV—To all

The necessity of educating tho negro being con.-id j <u Janes 1£ Me Fail, late of sent county deceased ;
tred, it becomes a matter of vital interest to us who is These are, therefore, to cite and admonish all
to be his teacher. He is a countryman of our own; a
child of our own soil and climate; he thrives here in
such a manner as to seem an Indigenous product or
tho South; his home and his associations are here; he
understands the peculiar culture of the region, and is
iiimself so peculiarly adapted to that culture, that iu
inanv sections he alone can oarry it on without mortal
wnjury to health. Here, without doubt, he is destined
to live, his lot is cast with ours for good and ill; past
connections enable us to understand better than any
body else his character and wants; and though extra
neous influences have lately introduced some suspi
cion between ourselves and him, that suspicion has
already almost past awsy, and he is again resuming a
plat and natural confidence in his old friends. It is
plain that wo arc formed to be his protecting ally; it
is plain that our interests and his are identical; he be
gins to recognize that fact and to see that after all, our
affectum for and sympathy with him, are of a more
genuine and permanent character than he can else

Such being the lias between us, it is evident that we
alone ought to undertake the negro's education. It
will be both for Us advantage and dsr own that we
should do bo. We shall teaoh him better because we
know him better than his Northern school-masters ;
and we shall give his mind just that sort of training,
aud just that sort oi direction which the present re
lations of the races demand. Yankee lessons serve
but to fill his mind with pernicious ideas, and to make
him ambitious beyond hiB capacity and sphere ; our
lessons will render him a uselul, contented, and truly
intelligent man.
We must not leave this work to others. It is foolish
to be blind to the progress of events, and to sbnt our
eyes to the fact that the once humble and unreflecting
slave is now a) man with aspirations and awakened
hopes. These aspirations and these hopes it iB within
our power to control within proper limits, if we cur-
round him with the conservative influences of South
ern thought.

Tragic End of an Adcltebx Cass.—St. Loui$,
May 7.—'The adultery case before mentioned had a
tragical end to-day. The parties accused pleaded
guilty and were fined $100. Mrs. Bright, the woman,
left the court room to pay the fine, when her husband
drew a pistol upon her. Mrs. Bright turned, and
evidently tried to get out of the way, but Bright was
too quick in his mavoments por her, and fired his
pistol, with the muzzle within a few inches of her
face, and the ball taking effect In the right cheek, an
inch or so back from the nose, and ranging through
to the other cheek. Mrs. Bright hurriedly turned
and walked out very rapidly toward the door of the
court of criminal corrections, where the husband fired
again, entirely missing his aim. After firing the
second shot, Bright was caught by both arms by John
Gilford, when be tried to tnrn the pistol against bis
own breast, in which he was foiled by John Ortell,
who had also seized him, snd by whose aid he was
quickly disarmed. The woman was removed to a
hospital where she shortly died.
