Roger*, from Liverpool, with machinery, &c., for the -ijranatevllle Manufacturing Company, hauiod in to the wharf near the market dock yestorday morning. The Winfield is one of the largest brigs that we have ever •sen in port, and wo must say one of the finest in ap pearance and one of the cleanest, her decks being tept in os scrupulously good order as that of any r.&val vepsel. The Winfield la well fitted up in her :abin, the interior of which is built of imitation ma hogany and rosewood, and the cornices of the celling beautifully guilded. She is provided with large and airy utate rooms for the accommodation of all her officers, and also, with two extra state rooms, one for ibe accommodation of pilots and the other for a pas- <fcc>?er. Hbo was built at Yarmouth, Me., about 17 months ego, is 128 feet long, 28 feot beam, 17 fee t depth o: hold and Is 442 ton3 burthen. During her recent voyage from Liverpool to this port she ex perienced very heavy galea, particularly’ on the coast of Ireland, but she succeeded in weathering them out without experiencing any damage. While lying in the port of Liverpool her size and entire build at tracted much attention among good judges of ship building. In addition to being a fine looking vessel for her size, she is also a good sailer, having made the rum from Galveston to Liverpool in thirty-five days, and has often beaten larger vessels by as much is twelve days on a passage. Capt. Rogers, of the Winfield, imderstauds how to keep a vessel in good order, having been entrusted with a vessel for six jeari without her owners seeing her. Correction.—We willingly give place to the sub- v'intd communication, merely r-marking that what was suid iu our paragraph yesterday was said with an aim to relieving Dr. Hardee as completely as possible trom the imputation which has rested upon him unco his prosecution, and which several previous paragraphs in this paper had perhaps given currency to. The decided action of Judge Fleming would seem to give grounds for the opinion that the prosecution was unjustifiable, and we referred it rather to the ^cueral proceedings at the inquest—knowing, of uric, nothing of the circumstances mentioned by uur lcorespondent—than to the action of the Cor oner huiiSdl. Savannah, May 16, 1866. To EdtiOiof i he aVVws a nd Herald : in your notice of the proceedings of the Court in the case <>f the State vs. B. W. Hardee, charged with telouy in selling poisonous drugs, you stare, after do- Uciug the righteous decision of Judge Fleming, that 'iht beet construction that can bo put upon the mat- tei ie that iris prosecution arose from an Ignorance of u. e law on the part of the coroner’s jncy." How sucId •. ruction can bo put upon the mutter I am at a jti to deiermine. The coroner’s jury had nothing at aii to do with the prosecution of Dr. Hardoe. so lar :.\in thst being a fact, it is entirely at variance with Li verdict of the jury, and the proceedings of the av before making up their verdict. I have before i- ihi original paper drawn up by the coroner, and •curaitted by him to the jury, but which the jury re- utd to sign, lor the very reason that in their ojiin- . •i no offence against the law had been committed by j 'j. iiaidce. In that original paper the name of Dr- j bar lire was stricken out wherever it occurred in con- | -uii.-n with the matter, and the verdict as rendered, I ■A which was published not only in the News aud | Herald but m the other papers of the city, is con. j dusivfc evidence that the jury of inquest have nothing ; v. ail to do with the prosecution. As a matter ol jU9_ ; La you will oblige one oi the jury to publish this ex- • ;Aiiation in order to correct the wrong impression j waveyti in your notice as above stated One of ihe Jobe. Meeting T>f CouncU. The regular meeting of Council wu held list even ing. Present—the Mmyor, Aldermen Ferrill, McMa hon, Williamson, Johnson, Wylly, Gue, Casey, Cuu- niugham, Soullard. — The bill for damages done to the shop and the house of John W. Anderson, Esq., on South Broad street, by the Oglethorpe Fire Company; when returning from a fire, was ordered to be paid. The city lot on the corner of Liberty street and the Thunderbolt road was ordered to be advertised for sale. % An ordinance extending the fire limits and relieving a number of persons from penalties incurred by vio lation of the fire ordinances during the war omaccount of the impossibility of erecting buildings and making repairs in accordance with the requirements of those ordinances was read for the first time. The ordinance providing for the compensation of the Assistant Harbor Master recently employed and for the appointment of a Deputy Harbor Master was adopted. An ordinance to regulate the appointment of com missioners for the Massie School, providing for the appointment of three commissioners, of which the Mayor shall be one, this commission to be joined to the Board of Education, which Board has become, in accordance with a recent act of the Legislature, a cor porate body. Hon. Solomon Cohen addressed the Council in favor of the ordinance, which was adopted. Alderman Williamson and J. L. Villa long a, Esq., have been appointed commissioners. An ordinance to permit barber shops to be kept open on Sundays until twelve o'clock, {was read for tho first time. The petition of Waring Russell, Jailor of Chatham County Jail, for an increase of salary, was referred to the Committee on Finance. The petition of A, F. Turley, that the laborers em ployed at the Laurel Grove Cemetery be paid the same amount as those on the streets, was granted. The petition of G. B. Lamar, owner of property on Fig Island, adioing that of the city, the boundary lin» s between which were being changed by the tides, to havo the lines fixed by surveys or otherwise, was re ferred to tho Committee on Docks and Wharves. A petition, signed by a large number of ciiizens, to have the fire limits extended so as to include the dis trict between East Broad, Liberty, Price aud Qwin- nott streets, was referred to the Committee on Fire. A petition from tho expressmen and omnibus drivers, calling attention to tho bad condition of the plank road on West Broad street, aud requesting that repairs bo made upon it, was referred to tho Commit tee on streets. A number of other petitions of no public interest, were variously disposed of, A resolution t<p the effect that two new steam fire engines be purchased for tho Fire Department of Sa vannah was introduced. Alderman Gue said that, by the salo of the fifteen old hund engines now belonging to the city, this desirable change could be made, and it would put money in tho city treas^y. Alderman Casey said that the old apparatus had better be sold, as it was of no use to the taty, whatever was done with the proceeds. Alderman Johnson thought that two Bteam fire engines would be adequate to the wants of the city for years to come. The proposed purchase of two ne<f* engines would, with that to be procured by the German Fire Company, make four engines— two more than were necessary. During the discussion of the resolution the question arose, whether the city had control of the Metroppli- tan Fire Company’s steam fire engine, or whether it could be withdrawn from the service of tho Tcity by the company which owned it ? The conclusion was reached that the* city had full control of this and any other engine that might be procured in a similar man ner. Alderman Johnson offered as a substitute a resolu tion that the Chief Fireman report tho number of engines not in use by the city. The matter of the new contract with the Gas Company being in order for thia meeting, Alderman Wylly moved that it be laid on the table indefinitely, and that the old contract continue in force until its expi ration. The motion was passed without debate. A communication from the Savannah Fire Compa ny announcing their annual inspection on Friday the 11th Inst., and the election of a foreman was re ceived and foreman confirmed. A communication from the Board of Health re questing ah appropriation to defray the expense of an inspection of privies was referred to the Health and Sanitary Committee. A communication from the Secretary ot the Sa vannah Water Works, asking an increase of salary for certain employees of the company, was referred to the Committee on Water Works. After the transaction of the usual routine business, Council adjournod. : Larceny or Mowr.—About six o'clock «y—twjly afternoon three freedmen entered the store of Jl- O’Byrne, near the Exchange dock, one of the party B ayiug that lie desired to purchase some cheese. The storekeeper immediately went to the lower enxTof the counter to wait upon him, and while he was employed in cutting the cheese one of the negroes, Henry Bn-, zier, reached his arm across the counter, ran his hand in the money drawer and took out twelve dollars. On being discovered by the storekeeper, the thief and one of the other negroes ran out of the store. They were pursued and captured, after a short chase. Bra zier, who stole the money, was taken before Justice Staley, where he confessed hi* then. He was ac cordingly committed to jail to await* his trial before the Superior Court. The other negro resisted the po liceman making the arrest, aud was therefore taken to the police barracks. Nothing being proven .jpgaiust the negro who was purchasing the cheese, he was missed. Meeting of Ihe Mechanics* Fibe Company —The Mechanics Fire Company held a meeting last night, President II. H. Linville in the chair. The meeting was very well attended, about forty members being present. * Thq resignation of Secretary R. J. Glasse was accepted, and Mr. Henry Bogardus was elected to fill his place. Several new members were elected, and many names of absentees wefe struck from the roll. Con siderable spirit was manifested- throughout the meet ing, and a disposition to make every effort to make tho Mechanic a first class company, seemed to animate all present. The first Wednesday in each month was appointed as tho time for holding the regular meetings of the company. * Mat I#, 1806. . Brutal Treatment of Phi son kb a bt a Police man.—Policeman Carr was brought before bis Honor the Mayor, yesterday morning, on a charge of using unnecessary violence <o a prisoner under arrest. It appeared that the prisoner, who was something taller than a flour barrel, and a dwarf alongaido tho police man who'had him under arrest, was struck several times in the head, unnecessarily by the policeman with his club. In passing along the-Bay the prisoner was observed in ebarge of the policeman, and seemed bewildered at bis arrest, and bung back in order to ask or explain gome matter to the policeman, who did not atop to listen but hauled him along. When near the corner of Broughton and Lincoln streets, several citizens, who noticed the policeman striking him with hia cjub, went and remonstrated, but the policeman stated that the prisoner had torn his clothes, which was but a poor excuse for beating the little fellow so badly; After hearing the testimony in the case. His Honor stated that be would esteem it a favor if any citizen woulfl report to the Chief of Police or to himself all cases of unnecessary violence used by po licemen in making arrests. It being clearly proven that the policeman in thia case did not have sufficient cause for striking the prisoner, he was fined twenty dollars and dismissed the force. Whan she was run on the bank ehe had sunk to her guards. There is no likelihood of her be coming a total loss, she is in a good position on the bank, and arrangements are being made to have her raised. ■ Steamer Hats Ashore—By the arrival of the Helen Getty yesterday from Florida, we learn that ihe steamer Hate was passed ashore on 9l.
