I w Matoe'i Court.—John Proctor, (colored) charged with resisting an officer in the discharge of hla doty, was brought before the Mayor yesterday morning. Proctor is one of the negroes who were arrested on Wednesday afternoon for robbing the money drawer of a store under the bluff, and refused to allow the po liceman to arrest him. The prisoner stated that he had nothing to do with the stealing of the money, and that he was not one of the party, he having gone into the store to purchase something. He also stated that he did not know that it was a polieeman who arrested him or he would not have resisted. The store keeper stated positively that he went into Ilia store with the boy who confessed that he stole the money, and that the policeman who made the arrest had his badge on and could be seen by any person. Fined ten dollars and costs, or thirty days on the chain gang. C. Williams, (colored) disorderly and fighting at the colored pic-nlc on Tuesday last, was fined five dollars and costs. The prisoner said in defence that he had run a little “tick” with the bar keeper, and not hav ing the stamps to .settle up, the bar keeper took his hat for payment, which illegal seizure caused the diffi culty. Albert Hhellman (colored»*for keeping a disorderly house on Wednesday night was brought up. He stated that ho had rented the lower portion of his house to a colored man, who let some of his friends in on Wednesday night. Being up stairs asleep lie knew nothing of the tact until the police made a descent on the premises. Case dismissed on payment of costs. Joseph Noble, (colored), charged with improper conduct and firing a pistol. It appears that Noble was one of the darkles who volunteered his services to go and assist in catching the colored boy Mayo, who robbed the store of Mr. Mather. Prior to his going into the house on Orange street, where the offence with which he is charged was committed, an arrange ment was made between him and an another negro man that he was to go into the house and appear to be drunk, and that he should come and enquire for him, and when he came to the door that the police were to arrest him and the balance of the party in thu house, and by. this means Mays would be arrested. According to arrangement, when the police got to the house negro number two knocked at the door and asked for Noble, who staggered towards the door and opened it. As soon as he opened tlie door he fired a large horseman’s pistol, which flashed in one of the policemen's face, the wad striking him over the eye. a The policeman was staggered for a few moments, but recovering himself, he rushed into the house with the other policeman and succeeded in arresting the whole party, amongst whom was Mayo. The pistol was found on the floor. As the firing off of a pistol was not a part of the arrangement entered into before Noble went iuto the house, and it being a violation of the city ordinance to fire a pistol in the city, the prisoner was fined ten dollars. Peter Kelly, (colored), found drunk and-lying in tho streets. Fined three dollars and costs. We arc under obligations to the Southern Express Company for late copies of Mobilo and Augustu papers. Remarks. Friday, May 18,1866. The dead lock in the cotton market continuing— holders refusing to sell, and no orders executing—ex change has almost disappeard. Sight on New York ia up to ii tp cent premium at the bank counters; out of doors par tojif cent discount, and good sterling has sold at 35&3TC premium. Money is exceedingly tight, aud everything is at a discount upon last week's prices, except cotton and exchange. ' Cotton.—The market for the first part of the week exhibited a very decided flatness, with no business done, but wltliing the last day or two there have been larger sales than could almost have been anticipated considering the advices from Europe. We consider that such a demand is caused by the accounts from this country, which points to very slim figures for next year’s yield, and which we are constrained to be lieve have a very substantial basis of truth, ss the New Orleans and Mobile Prices Current, of May 12, show the same difficulties of production as have been predicted and confirmed in our review of the article for weeks post, and we may say a larger deficiency ia anticipated than at any previous period since the growing crop has elicited comment. It is a serious matter for the Southern States, and we fear that sub sequent advices will but confirm if they do not in crease the complaints, now so general. We quote Middling at 31c, and can give no quotations foe higher or lower grades, as they ore extremely irregular: Sea Islands are more in demand, without any ad- vanc'e in quotations. Lower grades bum 45 to 50c, and good from TOc to $1. COTTON STATEMENT.
