The Daily flews and Herald. IgUggl* fM SAVANNAH, FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1866- THE imNOUX DEAD. liY HENRY TIMROD. The rain is plashing on my sill, Blit all tin's winded' Heaven are still; And so it falls with that dull sound Which thrills us in the church yard ground. When the lirst spadeful drops like lead Upon the coffin of the dead. Beyond my streaming window pane i cannot see the neighboring vane, Yet from its old familiar tower The hell comes muffled through the shower. What strange and unsuspected link Ot feeling touched, has made me think— While with a vacant soul and eve 1,watch that grey and stony sky— Qf nameless graves on battle plains Washed l>3' a single winter’s rains, Where, some beneath Yiginian hills, And some by green Atlantic rills; Home by t he waters of the West, A myriad unknown heroes oust. Ah ! * not the chiefs who, dying, see Their Hags in front of victory, Or at their life-blood’s noble cost Bay for a battle nobly lost claim from their monumental beds The bitterest tears a nation sheds. Beneath yon lonely mound—the spot By all save.some fond few forgot— Too the true luartys of the light W hioh strlces for free doin' and for right. Of them, thfcir patriot zeal and pride, The lofty faith-f hat with theiA died, No grateful page shall farther tell Than that so many bravely fell; \iol wo can only dimly guess What worlds of all this world’s distress, What utter woe, despair and dearth Their fate has brought to many a hearth. •Inst such a sky as this should weep Above them always where they sleep ; Yet Imply, at this very hour, Their graves are like a lover’s bower, Aud Nature’s self, with eyes unwet, Oblivious of the crimson debt To which she owes her April grace, Laughs gaily o’er their burial place. IN GENERAL. — The murder of Mr. Lincoln lias been dramatized and performed at Mulbau9en. The piece is entitled *‘Le Vie Mort d*Abraham Lincoln,*’ and is divided into seven tableaux. In the fourth act Mr. Jefferson Davis appeal’s upon the scene, and gives it as his opinion as long as Lincoln is permitted to live the cause of the South is lost, and Exclaims, “Who will get rid of this man for us ?** “I, “ replies his future murderer. —'The Chattanooga Union.- says the bridge across the Tennessee river, at that point, re sembles a huge snake, so irregular hag the structure been thrown together. In some cases there is a de cline of full eight inches to every twenty feet. The drawbridge is entirely useless; no one attempts to raise it for fear the whole will fall. —A girl fourteen years old, from Buena Vista, Ohio, named Lucrotia Conn, has been arrested at Hunts ville in male attire, and lodged in jail. She was for a while attached to the CCth Illinois regiment. Proper ' clothing will be furnished her aud she will be sent home. —A wicked editor says, that at church, some people clasp their hands so fervently in prayer that they are unable to get them open when the contribution box comes around. ' ’* ' —Mrs. Tom Thumb is in England. It is said “she is preparing for a little event that usually makes quite a commotion in a family.” “Little event” is good in the present instance. -Major-General S. W. Crawford is engaged in the preparation of a work upon the occupation, defence and fall of Sumter, 18ti0-*til. He was an officer of that garrison with Major Anderson. AVhat Head Centre Stephens is Doing. A largo number of Fenians called on Head Centre Stephens Saturday at the Metropolitan Hotel. It lias been ascertained from Stephens this afternoon that lie will not remove his headquarters to Union Square at any time.. The Head Centre spoke so emphatically on the subject that he created the impression that ho was not'altogether satisfied with the suggestion. It is said he expressed himself strongly against the ex travagance in hiring Union Square Building. It is not known outside of the circle of the secret council and attaches of the plaice in Union Square what the exact amount is in the treasury. ^ A prominent Fenian stated that the whole sum bow reserved to aid the cause of Irish liberty is less than three hundred thousand dollars, and besides this there are chocks for one million dollars, which are di rected to be*paid .to O’Rourke, who can have them cashed whenever he is required to do so. Stephens was enlightened to-day on the state of things, when lie had an interview with Griffin, the Treasurer. The interview was private, but is known to have had refer ence to the disposition of moneys received at Union Square. It is wel known that Mr. B. D. Killian took a lease of the Fenian place In Union Square in his own name, and Colonel O’Maliony and the oilier leaders antiei pflted after the difficulty which arose out of tho expe dition campaign fulls that Killian would eject all par ties from, the building. Their apprehensions, how ever, were unfounded, for Mr. Killian gave up the lease, books, papers and other articles in his charge to the representatives of Stephens. Headquarters in Union Square are now closed, and Col. Kelley, Secretary of Mr. Stephens, is in charge 01 the, building. Although Mr. Stephens is making every effort to effect a reconciliation between the rival sections of the Brotherhood, matters have transpired which show that the task will be no easy one. While seeking the co-operation of the -Roberts wing of the the Fenians, which is at present the meet potent of the two, he has carefully abstained from recognizing the former Senate in its official capacity; consequently any overture tor an adjustment of ; the difficulties can not bo entertained by a body whose official existence is 1 hUr denied. . Mr. Stephens issued an order to-day calling on all the circles in the United States to subscribe towards the’ movement in Ireland, and to send all moneys t«» him at his headquarters, Metropolitan Hotel.
