CHARMS .OF RURAL, LIFE,
ITlie May number of De Bow's Review contains the
exquisite poem by Wm. J. Grayson, entitled The
Country.” The following is a fine picture taken from
it, or the agricultural yoeman:]
Such be our champions, cl ’ il , d / f i n I “L t ura yield-
• Strong with the vigour healthful labourej
Not the pale growth of cities, of ‘he gloom
* of i'cII'iVh cripples frofii tli© null or looin,
Gaunt in-door'workmen, never trained to bear
The summer's heat or winter 8 biting air.
Whoa.- faculties are cramped and cabined in
To cut or point tlie wire that forms a pill,
Or polish needles, or like spiders spread,
In muslin webs, the attenuated thread.
Weak, toiling artists, fated to supply
Wealth's idle wants and labour "till they die;
To swift extinction doomed, but Nature s hand
Marches new levies from the teeming lamb
Recruits the decimated ranks, sustains
And lends new vigour to their feeble veins.
Mother of men! Tby rustic vigour gives
Alone, the heart by which a Nation lives,
strong in thy str'cugth, untamed the Arab roves
liu waste of sand, and guards his spicy groves.
Unconquered by the Turk's destroying horde,
Assyria’s arrow, or the Roman sword,
While all his holy citieB sink the prey
Ot Vico submissive to the stranger's sway.
From lields and folds the martial Roman cams.
Tic dauntless spirit, tho athletic frame,
Uv labour nerved, on rustic plenty fed.
To health and vigour by endurance bred.
In warlike virtues trained by rustic cares,
To scorn the toil of camp, the battle's fears,
Vc t prompt with crowns of.triumph on his brow
The sword renouncing, to resume the plough,
Ho-flew bis eagles till the wasting blight
Of city vices checked their onward flight.
Nor versed in arms alone! He learned to praise
The holds ho cherished in immortal lays;
To teach tho art that guides the farmer's hand.
When with the plough to turn the fertile land,
How wed to ash or elm the yielding vine^
What cares attend the fleecy flock or 1
Or horse of nobler breed; what signs 1
The storm, or promise the serenei day,
What nice experience aids the roving bee,
To make and stofe his vernal luxury;
How guard the grassy mead with bank and drain,
What seed tho valley asks and what the plain;
Which soils, or rich, or stony, readiest suit
r-Thc olive's wealth, the orchard's blushing fruit;
Unfold tho varied purpose of the year.
Its simple pleasures and abundant cheer,
•Spring's fragrant breezes, summer’s cool resorts.
Autumn’s gay feasts, and winter’s bracing sports.

Congressional Representation Under tile
Proposed Amendment.
The New York Tribune presents to its readers tho
following table, "showing the efTeot of the proposed
amendment to tho Constitution upon the Congres
sional representation of the slave States:”
“A new census would probably somewhat modify
ihese figures. The loss of life in the late war is not
introduced because the amount is unknown; nor is
the migration of the black race consequent upon free
dom. But we believe the result will be substantially
as we state it below.
The lirst column gives the population of the slave
States in 1800, taken from the United States census;
the second column the voters in 1860; the third col
umn presents the number of male citizens of color
ah.,ve t ho ago of 21; tho fourth column, the present
number of members each State is entitled to, and the
last the number to which she will be entitled when

TIMBER AND FARMING LANDS
FOB SALE.
I OFFER for sale a large body of lieavily.timbered
and flue farming Lands, lying on theSatilla
river, above the A. & G. R R., In Ware county, Ga.
These lands contain a great quantity of the largest
ranging and mill timber In the State, running par
allel with the river for miles. A steam mill put at
the bridge on the Gulf Railroad could be supplied
tor half a century. The river is a good rafting stream
for miles above my lands, from-which place parties
arc . rafting great quantities to Burnt Fort. There
are improvements at different points on the river,
some of which have good peach orchards, and pro
duce corn, sea island and upland cotton, sugar cane,
and all other southern products, as well as any lands
in Southern Georgia.
I wilt give a bargain in. the above, and will take
pleasure in showing the lands at auy lime.

\VV respectfully suggest to the editors of the Tribune
that there are no "slave States”—that there ie no
•-slave power” in the United States, unless it be that
powor’erercised by the present radical majority of the
present Congress—which excludes the constitutional
representatives of fourteen States.—Constitutionalist.
Railroad Convention.—A convention of the offi-
cers of the various railroads between Richmond and
Augusta, will be held at the Spootswood Hotel in this
city, on the Kith inst. Among other important mat
ters lor consideration, the convention will be called
on to arrange a schedule and through ticket to New
Orleans, and thus to ensure to that route at large pro
portion of the travel between Virginia and Louisiana.
We understand tliat tho new iron bridge over the
Catawba river, between Charlotte, North Carolina, and
Columoia, South Carolina, will be completed by the
15th inst., thus ensuringau uninterrupted connection
throughout the entire line. We presume that arrange-
mems will be made for “through tickets” and for
checking baggago from end to end, thus increasing
the.pleasure of this now direct and comfortable route.
