The Cle.k ot Council ststed that in both Instances tho po- L.ciaca ha t to be notified to ring ihe bell, and that LeuaLuii, instead oT being on the lookout, on Wednes day, tvaen the fire broke out, was quietly sitting down reading a novel. The policemen testified that on bulb darB theis was a large quantity of sawdust burning cn the oppos te side of the riv, r, and that tho smoke from it was blown across in the direction of the Charleston w arf, whore the fire ooourred. They had notieed the smoko but thought it was the smoke from tiis sawdust. Oue of the policemen stated that he had received orders not to ring the bell until he saw the fire. Both policemen were fined ten dollars each. The large fire which we mentioned in our last Issue as having been observed down the river on Thursday night, was caused by the burning of the steamer Stan- dish, with her entire cargo, constating of 250 bales up- land cotton. Of the burning of the steamer and cargo we gather the following particulars: The steamer Stan dish, Captain Backman, took on board 260 bales of cotton at White's Central cotton press, on Thursday last, for the ship Charlotte, loading at “four fathom anchor age," for Liverpool. At six o'clock p. m. she left the wharf, and at seven o’clock p. m. arrived at tho ship. It was ebb tide at the time, and tho wind blowing from the eastward. At about ten o’clock p. m. the cotton was discovered to be on fire aft, under the hur ricane deck. The wind blowing fresh at the time, the fire spread so rapidly that in five minutes the whole cargo and steamer were enveloped in flames, and It was with great difficulty that the officers and crew managed to escape witii their lives. Before the steamer could be cut I0030 from the' ship, the latter caught fire in three places. The flames, however, were extinguished without doing the vessel any Berious damage. As soon as the steamer had be come cleai of the ship and the flro on board the ship extinguish'd, the ofitcers and crew proceeded in small boats to endeavor to save whatever property could be got at, but on account of the intense heat it was lound Impossible la save anything, and it waa not until al ter the fire had been burning half an hour that they were enabled to get closo enough to her to fasten a line to her bow, by which they endeavored to tow her on to the Horse Shoe Shoals; but failing in doing so, they towed her to tho north bank of the river, about a quarter of a mile west of Mud River, and fas tened her to a tree, where she burned to tho water's edge at three o’clock on Friday morning, -in five feej of water at half flood tide. She now lies sunk at that place. The Standleh had been but recently purchased by Mr. William Dickersbn, and had undergone r. general overhauling andg-epairing. Sbo was insured in the Petersburg Savings and Insurance Company, of which Mr. A. W1 bur is agent in this oiiy, for $1,000. The cotton waa fully insured in Lloyd's, London, Arrivals at the Hotels. He Colored FtHEiiEtt's Fxilxde.—According ta pre vious announcement, the annual paiudo of the colored Fire Department loak place yesterday afternoon. The Engines, although r.ot as many in number or as well manned as on former parades, all were in good con dition, and were well worked when tho trial came off. Tho line was formed on South Broad street, between Lincoln and Drayton streets, in the following order : Axemen, numbering forty men—uniform, white shirt and pants, with red top boots—in charge of John Hamlet. Pulaski, No. 2, Hose Cart, twenty-sevou men—uni form, rod shi rt with blue trimmings, and white pants —in charge of no officer. YVarren, No. 1, seventy men—uniform, grey shirt with red trimmings and white pants—in ohnrgc of H. D. Headman. Franklin, No. 3, fifty men—uniform, biuo shirt with red trimmings end white pwiia—la charge of David 3aiiey. Tomlohicki, No. 7, sixty msn—uniform, yellow shirt, with blaok velvet trimmings, end whim Junta—in charge of ‘V. S. Mcrtulancl, Jr., and John Ryan, Niagara, No. 11, sixty men—uniform, red shirt with black trimmings, and white pants—in charge of John Nicholson and Solomon Zelgier. About five o clock the litre being formed, the engine, and men were inspected by Mayor Anderson, accom panied by MuJ. Crofton, in command' of thia military District. Aldermen Wylly and Cunningham, and ihe Chief Fireman, C. C. Casey, and First Assistant Fire man F. Eiair. The committee of inspection ao they proceed d along thb lines ware aocompenied - by j col ored brass bund of fourteen pieces, from Macon, led by Henry Freeman. We also noticed in prooessien several of t’eo energetic locale of our cctemporariec, who seemed to pay close attention io the whole pro ceedings. - After the Inspection, which' was highly satisfactory to ihe Mayor and Alderman, and the Flro Department' officers, they proceeded to the Fireman's Hall, where they partook of a glass of punch which had beeu pre pared expressly by Mr. Thomas Gilhooly, of the cus tom House Shader,"and which reflected the highest credit npoa the brewer. The proceedings at tha Hall being over, the companies were marched to tha cor ner of South Broad andHubc-rsham streets, where the respective companies tested the throwing capacities of their machines. The playing of the engines was highly creditable, considering the time they have been in Eci-vlce. They were supplied with water by hydrants and flayed through % and inch nozzles homizontally, up Habersham street, and suaceededln throwing their streams the following distanass : No.' 1,1st class Now York pattern, 168 feet ; No. 3,1st class New York pattern, 18Jfeet3 inches; So. 7, 2d class Boston pattern, 132 feet 9 inches ; No. 11, 2d class Boston pattern, 171 feat 8 inches. During the playing of the different engines excite ment ran high among the members of ihe d fl'erent o .inyanic:, but nothing of a s.rious nature occurred am 1 ng them, notwithstanding several -fights wore gotten up. After the trial of ths cnglfle?, wlticH lasted until nearly dark, ilia companies went through -evcrol of the principal streets on their way to their respective en« gino-bo i3es, accompanied by field music, tho baud accompanying tbs axemen. The machines were all safely boused by eight o’clock, and considering the large crowd of colored people of both sexes who thronged the streets u;.d sidewalks, making altogether tho.largest gathering of colored people ever assembled in this city, it is surprising that no accident or coili- cioirjpf aay kind occurred during the parade. The police were out in strong foroo, and deserve credit for the manner in which they discharged their duty in keeping everything quiet. - We take pleasure in bearing teetimony to the gene.
