The financial article of the New York Times of Wednesday, the23dinst., says: The panic news from England received last night, aud which induced, a heavy rush upon the Gold Room, as noticed in the postscript to our last report, wa9 fol lowed to-day by uu advance of interest in the Money market to lull 7 per cent. Tbis rate was very gene rally paid by the brokers today to carry over gold S3 well as stocks.. And aa tho banks expected to be called upon to pay large Hums into the Treasury on their certified checks to tho gold brokers, out of* Ihe ordinary course of the daily settlements through the Clearing-houso, there was some apprehension early iu the day of a severe temporary. pressure for' money. But this feeling was promptly relieved at the Treasury Office by assurances from Mr. Van Dyck, the Assistant Treasurer of the. United States that he would neither deliver nor insist upon payment for the whole of the large sums of gold taken from his broker last night— although deliverable at. hi'a option at any time iu three days—nor would he refuse, iu settlement witli, the banks whose checks he would come into pociesaion of, any of the interest-bearing obligations of the Govern- which they might prefer io tender in preference to currency. This ofter included twelve months” certifi cates of indebtedness, bearing 6 per cent, interest- certificates of deposit, on teu days’ notice, bearing 5 per cont., and compound G per cent, notes, due iu 1367 and 1868, all with Inll accrued interest to the pre sent date. This afternoon we are informed that the offer is made to the public generally to pay ofi' any of the certificates ot indebtedness, and any of tho com pound 6 percent, notes, with full accrued interest, on presentation at the New York office, thus saving to the* holders of the certificates ol indebtedness the trouble and delay of sending them to Washington. The Offer to receive the 5 per cent, certificates of deposit, waiv ing the tec days’ notice, is continued only to such of the Associated Banks in exchange or settlement of checks which the Assistant Treasurer may hold against them. In these liberal arrangements at the Treasury office it is not difficult to see tho early rdtum of the money market to a condition of ease, though at an advance of one or hvo per cent, in the rates current to the. brok ers, aa compared, with last week. In other words, 6a7 per cent, iu place of 4a5 per cent. The recent sales of gold out of the Treasury, with the premium thereon, will enable the Government to make a much larger further reduction of the public debt in May, than was anticipated early in the month, provided the certifi cates and notes now invited to be presented for pay ment are forthcoming. The Secretary, we are quite sfcre, would prefer to pay them off to retaining his present, large gold and currency balances in tho Treasury. The l'oreigu exchanges have been amply supplied with gold for shi$itavjnt out of the Treasury office, portion of the sales were no doubt availed of by gold speculators, who, as noticed las£ night, have advanced the price 2 to 3 per cent; but the whole amount let loose is available for export, directly or indirectly, aud the sooner it is hastened abroad the sooner win the trouble and anxiety of the movement be relieved here. Nearly overy one anticipates the most favora ble effect, every way, on American credit in Europe, in response even to the receipt of the first heavy re mittances of last week. It will be greatly heightened, of course, aud the relief warmly appreciated should eight millions additional go forward this week (as we estimate will be the case), and as much more next week and the week after, by which time, if not before, the occasion for such heavy remittances will have passed over. The amount of gold to be forwarded by the Cunarder from Boston to-morruw, and the extra steamer Tarim from this port, is estimated at $3,< 00,000 altogether. The preparations for Saturday’s steamers will proba bly ombrace $4,000,000 or $5,000,000, although we may remark that tho present demand for bills would scarcely justify such large figures. The amount of U. S. 5-20’s received by the City of New York and Bremen this forenoon was not large, and letters from the other side Bpeak of money being too valuable iu London to risk its outlay for 30 days on the purchase and trans mission to New York of 5-20’s even at low figures. We hear of no very considerable sums of Erie or Illi nois Ceutral, though both have undoubtedly been im ported to some extent at the present large differences between London and New York.
