The prisoner acknow ledged to firing the pistol, and thought he was outside tiie city limits. He was turned over to Major Crofton to work at the Unit^i States barracks for one week, I aod forfeit his pistol William Holman (colored), having chickens in his ^rsaession at four o'clock yesterday morning, sup posed to have been stolen, also charged with rssist- ns and striking an officer who attempted to arrest ium. The prisoner stated that he had purchased the chickens about ten miles in the country, and was Taking them to the market to sell them, and that when i,e was arrested by the policeman, being a stranger in the city, lit* did not know what policeman wanted n do to him, an'\ho therefore tried to. got away. As be purchased the chickens on the Ogeechee road, and was arrested in Crawford ward, it showed plainly that u was not carrying them to market; and as the fowls uii hud their heads off there was pretty strong grounds • ;■ suspicion that the prisoner had come by them wrongfully. The Mayor sentenced him to the chain- ! u thirty days, and ordered the chickens to be r r.vn to th. orphans. r diceman Dempsey, for being drunk and lying on tiie streets while on duty, was dismissed from the po- iice force, fined $30, and ordered to be confined thirty days.
