Alabama Items.
Otebtlow or THE WaRIUOB AMD Biobt Hit KM.
—We learn from our West Alabama exchanges that
the Warrior and Bigby hare been as high recently as
they have been .known for many years, flooding all
the plantations on the low grounds, completely de
stroying the crops. A party recently from Demopolis,
tells us the country Immediately above the junction of
these two streams with the Tombeckbee, was covered
by waters last week from one river to the other for
several miles up, entirely drowning out the crops on
a number of large and valuable plantations. These
destructions extend on a river line of at least 600
miles.
Oil is Class Comm.—A letter to the Mobile
Times from Clark county, Ala., says two gentlsmen—
one from New York—said to be a scientific mineralo
gist, have just closed their exunination of a considera
ble aectiou of country in Clark, with the moet extra
ordinary results as regards the prospecta for petro
leum oil. Their success, says the writer, embraces a
large scepe of country following the line of salt wells,
and especially where the extraordinary emission of
gaaes followed tfce auger, ete.
Crawford Jail Broken Open.—Sheriff Holland, of
Bnsseli county, Ala,, informs us that the jail in Craw
ford was broken open from the inside on Wednesday
night, and all the prisoners—nine negroes—escaped.
Tools must have been privately given them with
which to work. The jail is built of wooden logs, one
story in height, and contain! an inner room where the
prisoners are kept. The Inner partition was broken
open, and the locks of the doors, three in number,
were pried off. Most of the missing negroes were
confined for stealing. Three would certainly have
gone to the penitentiary, and probably more.

House Thief Caught.—Thursday night two men
went into the yard of Mr. McBeth, who resides near
the Hauge Range, and having pot a halter on one of
his horses were leading the auimal out. About this
time a geutiemau who lives with Mr. McBeth, return
ing from the city, made his appearance at the gate.
The intruders observing him threw themselves on
the ground and feigned to be asleep. The gentleman
suspected that sometulng was wrong, but being un
armed deemed it prudent to go to the bouse first
obtain assistance before attempting to arrest the party.
As soon as he passed them and was well in the house
they arose and proceeded rapidly down the road. They
had not gone far, however, when the young man and
the owner ol the premises came out in pursuit. They
fired twice at the robbers, and were greeted with a
like compliment from the latter. After this ilr. Mc
Beth and hii friend returned home.
Yesterday oue of the party, who said his name was
Wilson, was arrested in the Factory Range. He bears
upon his person three wounds, one in his arm, one on
the left shoulder blade, and another in bis side—all
made by buckshot.—-A uyutla. Chronicle.
