f -* "The Daily News and Herald, SAVANNAH, THURSDAY, MAY 31, 1866. Somebody’ll Come To*l(lfht. I must bind my hair with the myrtle bough And gem it with buds white, And drive this blush from my burning brow, a Tor somebody’ll come to-night; And, while his eye shall discern a grace In the braid and the folded flower. He must not And, in my tell-&ce The spell of his wondrous power. I must don the robe which he fondly calls A cloud ef enchanting light. And sit where the mellowing moonlight falls. For somebody'll come to-night; — And while the robe and place shall seem But the veriest freak of chance, 'Tis sweet to know that his eye will beam With a tenderer, happier glance. 'Twas thus I sang when the years were few That lay on my girlish head, And all the flowers that in fancy grew Were tied with agolden thread. And somebody came, and the whispers there— I cannot repeat them quite; But 1 know my soul wont up in prayer. And somebody's here to-night. 1 blush no more at the whispered vow. Nor sigh in the soft moonlight; My robe has a tint of amber now. And I sit by the anthracite; And die leeks that vied with the glossy wren Have jessed to the silvery gray; But the love that decked them with flowers then Is a holler love to-day. IN GENERAL,. —The little tax of one cent upon every box of matches netted the Government $1,600,000 last year. According to that estimate 160,000,000 bunches or boxes of matches must have been used in this country during the year, or five bunches—equal to five hun dred matches—for every man, woman and child. —We hear that Edwin Forrest, tile tragedian, pur poses on his return from California to carry out a long contemplated scheme by founding and endowing in Philadelphia a home for retired actors. —A movement has been inaugurated by the Boston friends of William Lloyd Garrison for a national tes timonial of $60,000, to be presented to hint. —At least twelve hundred Mexicans were executed in oue month at Zacatecas, under Maximilian’s decree condemning to death those opposed to bis govern ment. —It is in contemplation, says the New York Tribune, to adjourn the United States District Court at Biuhrnond until October, when it is supposed that Chief Justice Chase may be Induced to preside. —The Government is in possession of evidence going to show that a number of freedmen have been kidnapped from Georgia, and 1 smuggled off to Turk’s Island, to do forced work In the salt mines, or trans ferred to agents engaged in the Cuban slave trade. —An election for State offloers will be held in Texas on the 35th of June next. At the same time s vote will be taken on adopting or rejecting the new consti tution. There seems to be no doubt as to tbs adop tion of the new constitution. —The subject of Soldiers’ Orphans' Homes in the States is beginning to attract Northern attention. The State of Pennsylvania has appropriated $300,000 for that purpose. —Senator Wright, of Now Jersey, is reported to be physically better, and in full possession of his mental faculties, Air. W. has undoubtedly enjoyed reading his own obituaries—a pleasare accorded to but few men. —A patent has recently been granted for a machine for making and dressing button holes. —The Senate has rejected the nomination of W. H. Purnell, as Postmaster at Baltimore. 4, i HOBLE PUiPOSE AND Interview with Santa Anna. A special correspondent of the Louisville Democrat had an interview with the one-legged Mexican last Wednesday, of which that paper gives the following account: It being a matter of much conjecture whether Gen. Antouio Lopez de Santa Anna is on the imperial or re publican side of the Mexican fence, the correspondent of the'Louisville Democrat accepted an invitation from some of the General’s friends this morning, to take a cup of coffee witn him, with a view, if possible, of solving the vexed question. Proceeding to a brown stone mansion in the upper part of the city—the residence of a well-known Span ish merchant, we were soon ushered into the august presence of the ex-dictator. He" was reclining on a sofa and smoking a cheroot when we entered. He im mediately rose, and with a free and easy ‘‘Happy to see you gentlemen” (he speaks good English,) cor dially took each of the party by thohand, witha request that we should be seated. Refreshments, in the shape of “green seal” and segars were then served up. After some general ob servations concerning our mutual healths, tke state of the weather, the prospect of the visit of the cholera iu the course of the coming summer, and other common place.-, your correspondent ventured to break tbe ice touching the General’s particular business in New York. Deni. Cor.—Affairs in Mexico, General, are assum ing a very interesting phase. Sama Anna.—Yes, sir, they are. R is sad to think my poor country is never to end her civil wars as your country has. Deni. Cor. -Do you think, Genoral, that any con siderable portion of the Mexican people are attached to the Empire? Santa Alina —Oh I yes; I have no doubt of it. Time often works wonders. Many who disliked foreign in tervention, at first, seeing the intruders have given them protection to life and property, may be recon ciled by degrees to the new order of things. l)em. Cor.—But do you think that those who en tertain such views constitute anything like a majority oi your countrymen ? Santa Anna.—By no means, They include the fo reign merchants, emigrants, and a certain proportion of the Roman Catholic clergy. I believe the great ma jority of the Mexican people proper, if they could have their way to-day, would vote the imperial system out of the country to-morrow. Bern. Cor.—What do you think of the feeling in the array oa that point? Santa Anna.—My dear sir, Mexican soldiers are like ail other kinds of soldiers. They will fight for those that pay them best. If the Republic had had the means to pay its troops, the French would never have beeu able to walk iu so easily. Maximilian had mo ney, and whoever has money, in Mexico or anywhere else, has always at hand the sinews of war. Pern. Cor.—What think you, General; wouldn’t it be better tor Mexico that the imperial system would be Consolidated there than that the Republic should again supersede it? In other words, do you think republicanism consonant with the genius of the Mexi can people ? Santa Anna.—It matters but little what my opinions are on that point. My conviction* are that the Impe rial intrusion cannot endure, because it is an intru sion. I think if the French troops were withdrawn the Empire would totter to its fall in less than thirty days thereafter. Dem. Cor.^-General, some of the newspapers have been publishing your manifesto, written by you three years ago, giving in your adhesion to the Empire and eulogizing Maximilian. Santa Anna—1 expected that those letters would be published. I-do not deny their authenticity It is true that at the time they were writter I thought that Mexico, just rescued from anarchy, might find peace under the new regime. The events since transpiring have disabused my mind. No man can foresee or control events. All men in public life are subject to change of opinions, as events themselves change Patriotism and statesmanship are both governed by tho law of our existence. Your own American public men are illustrations of this. Your recent war com policy m4ny ° f tb * m to “ o4li ' y Ulelr views of public Dem. Cor.—Then, General, as I understand you you arc now in favor of ordering out Maximilian and restoring the Republic. Santa Anna—Exactly so. Item. Cor.—How would yon proceed ? Santa Anna.—1 cannot answer that question defi- J l’r. esent - I have a plan of my own, which I shall take the earliest opportunity of communicating to the friends of Mexico in the United States, and it meets their approval, I believe the days of tlm Mexican Empire are numbered, and this too without embroiling the government in the perils or war Ft* myself I mean to consecrate the remainder of mv a»i to my country. I have no selfish or ambitious ends to subserve. I have wealth enough to satisfy reasonable wants of any man for a life-time; bnSI am weary of retirement, aaff desire to devote all my energies and all my wealth now to the oauae of Mexfcan inde pendence. Enemies may misrepresent my motives and impeach my disinterestedness; but I shall never theless pursue the oonrse I have prescribed for myself leaving my vindication to be determined by results. ’ At this point tne General appeared anxious to change the conversation, and as he had been so communi cative. your correspondent did not fleam it either- politic or polite to “pump” him farther. The rest -jj his talk was about the theatre, the opera, the Central Park, the greatness of the city of New York, etc., etc. Teoublxs of Jutmzx at Richmond A Wstidw ton letter says : “I learn from the vary best authority at Richmond that two gentlemen, long resident of city. Who were on the Grand Jury which found h true bill against Jefferson Davis, have already Itmin marked and made thq object of persecution in their social and business relations that they have bueu.com- psilod to close up their business, and are making preparations to leave the oity. * Tho tide of emigration westward—already large- promises te exceed that of any previous year. Thous ands, sayB a Chicago letter, are coming into the Mis sissippi Valley. Large numbers are crossing the plains, of whom the bulk are bound to Colorado Mon tana and Idaho. The prospect of a comparative’ early completion of the Pacific railroad induces many to await ihai event before journeying to the Territories beyond, or to the Pacific States. Canada ia contribu ting quite largely to this tide of emigration, while the Eastern States ar* doing their share. All ths towns in the West are fud and overflowing, and reports come to us from oil quarters that there is a pressing demand far dwellings, but a very inadequate supply. A. Glorious Result - H.
