Aii orders left with them will be promptly attended to. Roosting Oct.—Charles Mills, a colored man, was •ten coming over a fence in Currytown at a very late lionr on Wcdnosday night. The person who saw him and arrested him stated that the darkey, on seeing him, jumped into a wagon and feigned to be a9leep. He was turned over to a policeman, who conveyed him to the police barracks. On being brought before tbe Mayor yesterday morning, he stated that he had busiuess in that part of the town, and it being rather ^te, and lie feeling sleepy, he thought he would take e nap in the wagon. He denied having jumped over <tay fence, and stated that the party who arrested him and rurned him over to the police had used him pretty roughly with his fist. The testimony of the person who made the arrest having to bo taken with a great ital of allowance, and in consideration of the prisoner having been confined all night, the case was dis missed. Jacob Mitchell, found sleeping on one of the plat- : rms on Bay street, ou Wednesday night, was also bef re the Mayor’s Court yesterday. He stated that b« had no particular occupation, boarded around the market and cook shops, and took the first soft plank he came across for a bed. He was turned over to the guard-house to work, where he will be accommodated Tith board and lodgings. Fighting near the Market.—A difficulty occurred Lear the market, yesterday morning, between a white man. the driver of a street wagon, and a nego from tlio country, who had brought a wagon load of oats to | market fur sale. Daring the difficulty both parties tul their knives drawn for action, but the timely ar- ..valof a policeman, who arrested both parties and conveyed them to the police barracks, prevented them parties from using their weapons. On being taken be fore th« Mayor, the white man stated that his horse bad gone over to the colored man’s cart, and pullsd ut some of the oats, whereupon the colored man *:iuck the horse. The negro, on the contrary, stated that the white man drove his horse up to the wagon purposely to let him get a feed of oats, and when h c remonstrated with him about it, he struck him. The pi-licemu.n stated that hc saw no blows struck, but roth parties hail their knives drawn. His Honor, :Uinking they were both to blame in the matter, Itamisecd the case upon payment of costs. drugged.—A seaman was taken before the Mayor's ourt yesterday, who was arrested while lying drunk tud . j leaping in Johnson Square. The policeman who arrested him stated that when he arrested him and placed him in a wagon to convey to the police bar racks ho was so far gone as to bo unable to tell his vn name. Jack stated that a sailor runner went on :.ud tire vessel where he belonged and induced him :o go ashore with him. Alter .he got ashore he said mr He was drugged, as hc thought, for the surpose of i-.r.g shipped ou another vessel. Jack's yarn, how- tver well spun, did not take well, as he had been **ia early in the morning by "him sell in a condition tat indicated that he had been imbibing the drug • ■ue. He was fined three dollars. Examined.—The negro boy Speed, who was arrest- i-i in ihis city on Saturday last and committed to jail, aarged with stealing silver and plated ware, which he -ud his former mistrosa had buried in Morgan county, in r to the passage of Sherman's army through this and which ho subsequently dug up and disposed :.wa j examined before Justice Staley yesterday. On 4c examination it was clrarly proven that no other :$en except his former mistress and himself knew ; ;hc articles being buried, and the prisoner himself •-limited that fact, but said nothing about his -^iug the box up and abstracting the Jolts therefrom, and then filling the box mi sand and replacing it in its former * -'.ion, notwithstanding several of the articles stolen ■:e subsequently found behind his tool chest in the \> where he was working. The proof of the tlielt •ng so conclusive against Speed, he was turned over tii* Superior Court of Morgan county for trial. s rPERioB Court.—The case of Andrew Lightbody, Aigtd with the offence of larceny from the house, tried by the Superior Court yesterday. It was i v t u that the goods .stolen were found in his . session, but there being no evidence showing that committed the theft, the jury rendered a verdict of -tgu lty. There were three persons charged in the -i'.ament, which was breaking into the store of C. « ss some time since, and stealing therefrom several N icies of clothing, which were subsequently found on *rd oi a New York pilot boat lying in the stream op- *ue the lower nee mill. TIiq prisoners being tried -paiately, the other two parties charged are still lying :t jail awaiting trial. Goons Stores ro be Closed at Six O’clock 5 IEE Afternoon.—By reference to the advertise- £fGt m another column, it will be scan that a number ° M hading dry goods merchants have agreed to U08fc their stores at six o’clock in the evening from 1|T June to the 30th of August next, for the pur- ’ v8e °f allowing their clerks a little time for healthful •’^creation. emitted to Jail.—Charles McGill, a Beaman had deserted from a vessel in port, was arrested tS *eruav and committed to Jail by Justice Staley. Martha Carroll, charged with stealing jewelry, was i40 Emitted to jail by Justice Staley to await an ex- ^inaticn. - /. Poking in the Market.—Andrew Williams, a ^oy, * or TiolaDng city ordinance relative to poking ir. the market, was arrested yesterday truing, and taken before the Mayor’s Court. He * rt sentenced to be locked up for twenty-four hours. A New alarm Fire Bell.—We notice that the Ne apolitan Fire Company have erected in the cupalo of Guard House a new alarm fire bell. There has bean more activity in Exchange this week and a fair amount of bills sold. Sight on New York haa brought ont of doors }. to >4 premium, and the banka auppiy demands at >5 premium. Sterling sold at 40 to 43 premium. Cotton.—Teis market has, up to yesterday, ex- hibltasd considerable activity, but for the last two days there has been leas doing—in foot the sales have been conflned to very few parcels. While we would have quoted middling, during the first part of the week, at 38c, we have now to reduce our quotations to 36c ft lb. The decline is censed by the dullness in Europe and consequent decline in New York, as the letter market seemed to anticipate an advance from Liverpool, and had consequently advanced on sueh anticipation and bad crop accounts; which latter we still regret to have to report as no more favorable, grass being added to other troubles, owing to *n unprecedented wet month of May, end in a measure to inefficiency of labor. In Sea la lands there is nothing doing. COTTON STATEMENT* Al Tv;, C3 HIGH WATER. . 9 211 At Port. Arrivals at the Hotels. f LLASKI HOUSE—W. II. Flour—'There U-S folr supply, (Alt wdf Satncderate demand. We quota good Ohio at $9011; good family at $11 60014, spd ordinary at $8010. Hay.—A cargo of Eastern arrived yesterday, but w* hike not heard, the pries at which it will b* put up on' the market. The Rock of both Etstera and Northern already on the market are large, and a number of large holders refuse to sell, awaiting better prices Eastern is held at $1 30® 1 36, and Northern at $1100 1 15, at which prices sales have been made. Lime.—Two cargoes of Rockland arrived yesterday. We have heard the selling rate*'at but on*, which is $2 75 from wharf, in quantities, and $3 by rstsiL Molasses and Sugar.—There is very little on the market, and no demand. It is held at 53c for Mused- ▼ado, Id tierces, and 45046c for clayed Cuba; Florida Syrup 65070c. Muscovado sugar is held at 12>»c, and white do, in boxes, at 15c; brown is held at 13014c; B coffee, 16c; crushed, 14\015c; powdered 17, and yel low coffee at 14c. Rice.— The receipt# ars so small as to be scarcely worth mentioning. Such sales as are made are con fined entirely to the retail trade. We quota Carolina at 12014c, at retail. The growing crop, we learn, has been estimated at about 600,000 bushels, which is only shout one-third the quantity brought to market prior to the war. This estimate, in addition to Georgia, in cludes the crops on the Carolina side of the Savannah river. Salt.—We hear of sales within the past few days of 5000 sacks at $1 50. It is retailing in small lots at $1 75. Soap—The market is abundantly supplied, and the demand for the home trade continues moderate. Prices are lower. We quate Colgate A Hull’s family brands at 14c; common brands, ll. l i@12^c. Timber and Lumber—The arrivals of timber are equal to the demand. Prices remain as quoted last week; shipping lots at $14022, as to quality and size, very large and long timber above those rates. In lum ber there is Tery little doing. Freights—Are very dull at ),'d for upland, and \'d for sea island to LiverpooL To New York, by steamers, freights are fluctuating and nominal. We quote $ 1 $ bale for cotton, and $1 50 $ bale for domes tics. To Philadelphia and Baltimore, by steamers, \'c for cotton. To Boston, per steamer, square 15x16 com. presed, J^c. By sailing veaaela to all northern ports, >£c. Timber to Liverpool and Bristol, 42s 6d045s ft load; to New York $10011. Lumber it in good de mand to West India ports, $10011 ft 1,000 feet, and $18 to the windward of the island. Darien Timber Market. Darien, May 29, 1866. The supply of timber, for either shipping or mill purposes, is not so good at at last report. Mill timber has advanced a little in price, but shipping timber, owing to the extreme dullness of the article in both foreign and home markets, scarcely maintains th e prices of three weeks ago. There are but few buyers in market. The mills are not sawing much, from the fact of their wharves being filled with orders sawed and waiting for vessels. Freight much needed to Boston, New York, West Indies and South America. Sav’h Wholesale Prices Current. Articles.
