SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1866. “The Undiscovered Country. Could we but know The land that ends our dark, uncertain travel, Where lie those happier hills and meadows low Ah, if beyond the spirit’s inmost cavil. Aught of 1 that country could we surely know, Who would not go ? Might we bnt hear The lowering angels’ high imagined chorus, Or catch, betimes, with wakeful eyes and clear, One radiant vista of the realm before us— With one rapt moment given to see and hear, Ah, who would fear ? Wero we quite sure To find the peerless frieud who left us lone, Or there by some celestial streams as pure, To gaze in eyes that here wero lovelit only— This weary mortal coil, were we quite sure, Who would endure ? The Evening Shade. ’Tis evening, and the regal sun Is sinking to Hcsperides in ruby glare, And bright his lingering beams Fall on mossy knoll and tapered hamlet spire, Akin to human partings; When those we love have Heavenward path begun. Or like an aged chief, whose warrior race bas run. Tbe dark woods now in beauty decked. The trunks of ancient oaks all clothed to golden glory; The rills with shadow leaves are flecked, Like panoply in some old knightly story; Like unto life well spent; Wlion reached the goal where to our race has led, And fall to sleep with honor thick on silvery bead. IS GENERAL. —Wolves are so numerous and voracious in the northern part of Tremont, Iowa, that a heavy bounty has been offered by the residents for their destruc tion. —The Lynchburg district of Virginia has already paid about $700,000 in taxes of all descriptions to the United States Government. By the 1st of June the taxes will amountto $1,000,000 or more. —The dead body of an unknown woman, partially dressed in male apparel, was found in the East river, New York, on-Thursday. The remains had evidently been in the water for several weeks. —United States Marshal Murray, of New York, has decided-to hold the seized Fenian arms and ammuni tion, notwithstanding tho demand made upon him for their delivery by Mr. Roberts. —A special dispatch to the Herald from the Suspen sion bridge says .Ur. Kempton, Mayor of Fort Erie, went out to read tlic riot act, when the Fenians killed him. A man who refused to give up his horses was riddled by bullets. It is reported the Fenian pickets have killed three Canadians. —Tlic Lynchburg Virginian says: ‘‘Weunderstand that there are a great many muskets in the hands mostly of the negroes in this city and neighborhood. We even learn that they are forming companies, and- mustering and drilling in the suburbs.” - the passage of jr Council* June 6, 1866.$ 1 SECTION 2. The University of the South —Our readers will recollect the measures taken by the late Bishop Polk and the other Southern Bishops, at his instance to establish on Bewail Mountain, in Tennessee, a great university, which should be to us what Oxford is to England. The present Bishop of Tennessee, Dr Qnintard, thus discribes in the journal which accom panies his address to the Diocesan Convention, held last week at Bolivar, its present condition, after stat ing tho arrival of Rev. J. Austin Merrick, D. D., chosen rector of the Diocesan Training School, ol which ho subsequently makes mention. Under date of 23d of March, be says : } Accompanied by the Rev. Dr. Merrick. Rev. Thos. A. Morris and Geo. R. Fairbanks, Esq., one of the trustees or the University of the South, I visited “University Place. •• All the buildings, with toe ex ception of an old log cabin were burned by ibe Fed eral army while encamped on the ground.' The corn er stone of the University, a block of marble weigh ing six tons, was broken up and entirely removed. The valuable album, containing landscape sketches by the venerable Bishop of Vermont; all tho topo graphical maps and. reports of the engineer corps, showing the peculiarities of local position, the eleva tion abovo the sea level, as well as tho level of the sur rounding country, were removed from the iron safe in which they were kept, and carried, off. I selected locations for the buildings of our Diocesan Training School. In the evening, we erected a ci oss on the site selected for the chapel; gathered the work men about it, aud asked the blessing of tlic Great Head of the church on our undertaking. We recited the Apostles* Creed, aud made the grand old woods ring with the Gloria in Excelsis. Strange Indian Stout.—For some time past, says a recent number of the Carrollton (HI.,) Democrat, a party numbering flteeu, belonging to the Cherokee tribe, have been encamped on tbe banks of the Illi nois river, ten miles from this place. Their ostensible oblect was fishing, hunting, Ac., but if appears from recent developments, that their chief aim was to se cure a hidden treasure of seven urns of Spanish coin, which had been imbedded to the bluffs at that point in years agone by their ancient forefathers. They socmed to be extremely cautious in their manners, lest the pale face should discover the cause of their presence in that particular locality, and wrest tho coveted prize for which they had travelled many miles. Alter diligent search, which occupied some ten or twelve days, they succeeded in finding the spot where lay concealed-the secret of their researches. Little remains to be told. Suffice it to say that, al ter due exploration their brightest anticipations were ite for more than realized. The urn of gold and other sacred relics spoken of by their chiefs long since goue to the “happy hunting grounds, ” -were secured, and these untutored children of the forest took their de parture for the far West, with many thousand Span ish dollars to cheer then), on. their long and tedious march.
