m >► BT MABT WALSINOHAM. [The following beautiful "romsnza" will be read with much interest, as It is a perfect little gem:] Young Mowbray Journeying to the wara, All belted he and>epurred, From lady’s hand received a rose, And from her Ups this word: ■•I loan thee to my country’s cause, For glory, not for doom; ‘ To l>e not slain, but slay her foes, I deck thy knightly plume. Remember, caution is not fear, nor rashness valor's test, If he who fights and dies does well, who fights and lives does liest.” Now fierce the tide of battle laves. And fast the conflict flows; And high above the fight still waves The white plume and the rose; And gaily through the gathering fray Our flower-crowned warrior see. Strikes many a gallant blow this day While mgh°rve d tK y stil. rings, With stroke on Ho! he wbcTfights and dies does well!—who fights and lives does best! Ah! woe is me! that love’s kind hand. Love's self should, hapless, mar ! A marksman viewed the helmet grand. And mark'd the blood-red star! A downward lance clove helm and crest, And, bathed lu crimson tide, Love’s fatal gift kissed liiiutiug breast, And murmuring thus he died; ••Ob, love, lor Fame men strike and live!—for Free dom heroes fall! If he who fights and lives gives much, who fights and dies gives all!’’ IN GENERAL. — The heads of the guilty and wicked radicals in the New York Custom House are beginuing to fall. On Wednesday several were removed. — The President has approved the bill directing the examination of a site for iron-clads at Portland, Me; also, the bill admitting, free of duty, to the United States, lumber owned and sawed by American citizens in New Brunswick. — It is reported that the British Minister has de manded the surrender of the Fenians who fell into our hands. — The first hundred miles of the Union Pacific railroad have been completed. The amount now in the Treasury vault at Wash iugtOD, subject to draft, is nearly $100,000,000. —A stock-raiser in Tennessee recently sold $13,000 worth ol Casbniere goats in one week. Olio ewe sold for $1,300. g|— About three hundred colored couples were mar ried last week at the freedmen’a village on Arlington Heights, in pursuance of Gen. Howard’s recent order relative to concubinage. — There is a perfect stampede among tlic citizens of Alexandria, Va., to escape their extremely burden some taxes. Two-thirds of the stores in the place are for rent, and business of all kinds is being driven from the place. OF SAVANNAH, \ Omnns Cliu or Ooowoiu Inn* 5,1866. f r 2. [Extract from the Registry Laws, pass ed 22d January, 1852-J Extract from Ordinance passed Dec. 27, 1866: SEC. 4. And Wit rentier ordained by the authority aforesaid. That every male resident of said city, be tween the ages of twenty-one and sixty years, shall be liable to a poll or capitation tax of one dollar an nually, except only such of said persons as may be ruar entitled to registry anil to vote at city elections, and who shall register their names and pay ror the same. The following named persons have registered their names since the first Monday in January, 1866 : A. -Solo- Xew Jewish Synagogue in Berlin moil's Temple Outshone. The Jewish. Synagogue just completed at Berlin, but uot yet consecrated, is one of the most gorgeous build ings in Europe. The entire coat of the structure is estimated at a million thalers, $750,000, in gold. To give a description of the building is utterly beyond my power. It is surmounted by a huge dome of the Oriental type, which can be seen from every house top in Beriiu. It is not less conspicuous for its East ern form, than for the heavy guilding which covers t in every part. Besides, there is also a minor dome, iso richly gilded. The interior is broken up iuto be great central hall of worship, not far from a hun dred feet iu length, and provided with 3000 chairs for he worshippers. These are of oak and richly carved, khe number of seats on the ground floor, and devoted jo the men, is precisely equal to the numbers iu the jwo galleries'devoted exclusively to the use of the wo men. The finish of the interior is of the most elabo rate kind, and yet there is not a word or symbol in the building except the imitation of the command ments behind the pulpit. - The ground color of the wails is brewn, but it is so profusely studded with stars, and very delicate tra cery, dune in gold, that the eye is dazzled with the splendor. The whole is lighted with two thousaud burners, and the cost of the gas burned each hour is about fifty dollars. The rooms for committees, and for small meetings, are as splendid in their way as the main hall. The general arrangement of pulpit, read ing-desks, pews and galleries, i9 not unlike that of a Christian Church, aud yet there is a certain inde finable something which seemed different. All was more or leas Oriental in its general effect. The organ is in the lower gallery, not opposite the pulpit, but is at the same end with it ; it is a first-class instrument, but is entirely concealed from view by a screen. The price of a single sitting in the Church is five hundred dollars at the present rate of the American.paper. It would require a not inconsiderable fortune* to buy a pew for an American family. In size and splendor this new Jewish synagogue un- quostionably eclipses the temple of Solomon. In its erection the best materials have been used, and the highest skill employed in every department. The mere experimental and preliminary attempts in paint ing the interior cost more thau ten thousand dollars. The Jews of Berlin are proud of it, of course, for there is no place of worship in the Prussian capital which cau compare with it. The cathedral connected with the national church of the land is insignificant com pared with this new Jewish temple. It is in the dis play of wealth involved in building this structure that the Jews can show what power they possess, and the pride of which it is the expression, is eveu stronger than the internal hatred of the two sects of Jews whose united money builds it. The recent visit of Mrs. Jefferson Davis to Wash ington was the occasion of much umbrage to the scorpion-colored radicals, who desire to see “ treason made odious” by heaping insult upon distinguished and noble ladies whenever it is practicable. They conceive that they are deeply offended because Sena tor Saulsbury, yielding to the dictates of a kind heart and the promptings of true gentility, thought proper to escort Mrs. Davis to the Church of Ascension. This compliment, paid by the distinguished Senator to a valued lady acquaintance, the wife of an old personal aud political friend, is said to have created quite u “sensation” iu radical circles, as every other decent, respectable and courteous act does. Tt is also a subject of grievous complaint that after church, on the day and year aforesaid, and at Wash ington aferesaid, a •• noted rebel” procured a buggy, yea, an “ open” buggy, aud took a Sunday ev« niog drive with Mrs. Davis about the principal streets of the city! It is furthermore alleged, among other treasonable things which were developed by Mrs. Davis’ visit, that very marked attention was paid her, aud that many distinguished personages made “ un seemly” haste to pay their respects. Tne hounds who delight in persecuting prisoners and innocent women aud children, desire to see hu manity deny its oflices of sympathy and kindness to an innocent aud unhappy lady, who is on a mission of love and mercy in behalf of her sick aud suffering husband! May a just God punish with shame and coufusion such mean aud detestable spirits, who envy a poor, broken-hearted lady even the consolation which kind friends would extend to her iu her grief! The deepest and hottest pit of Hades is too good and cool a place for such despicable characters.—Rich mond Timas.
