An ordinance {foe opening said Btreet, with a proviso that no more streets should be opened through the '.-pot ground of the Albany A Gulf Railroad, was read the first time. An ordinance defining the duties of the Jailor was real the first time. It prohibits him from discharg ing prisoners committed by order of the Mayor or C -uueii until the fines are paid and an order o btained iroui the Mayor, on pain of dismissal from office. Tiie ordinance changing the Sunday ordinance in rt-lauuu to the sale of soda water, Ac., came up for ifn second reading. It allows the sale of soda water until 11 p m . aud ice cream from 5 to 11 p. m. Alderman John sou moved to lay the ordinance on the table, which was lost, Aldrrmen Johnson and Lachlison voting for the proposition. After much discussion Alderman McMahon offered an amendment pro hibiting the sale of soda water or ice cream on Sun days from wagons or being hawked about the streets, which was adopted by a vote of four to three. Honesty is the best policy in medicine as well as in other things. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla is a genuine preparation of that unequalled Spring medicine and blood purifier, decidedly superior to the poor Imita tions heretofore in the market. We hare received a copy of the above work, and have enjoyed its perusal very much. It is a pleasant story of quiet Ameri can domestic life, showing bow thoroughly the faithful performance of duty can be made its own reward, and the interest of the story is unflagging throughout, making this book, in these days of summer weather, most enter taining. A petition was read from several citizens who had entered into contracts before the pas- iige of the ordinance. One petition, with 148 Signatures, asking for the repeal of the ordinance or its extension over the corporate limits; and one e.cnei by 27 owners of real estate, asking that it be act repealed, were presented. The whole matter, w.ih tne petitions, was referred to a special com mittee consisting of Aldermen Ferrill, Soullard and McMahon. Dr. IV. F. Sargeant presented a petition, praying to be refunded one. hundred dollars, the amount of li cense paid by him for a land raffle. He stated that he hni u!y received seventy-five dollars, while his ex- ; use lor advertising, Ac., exceeded three hundred doiiars. Aidci man McMahon was opposed to granting the prayer of the petitioner, as if it were done the Boatd would have hundreds of similar applications before it. Tne petition was laid on the table. The Han-dressers Protective Union” sent a peti- t.on, asking Council to repeal the ordinance aUowing kal ’cr hops to be kept open till 10 o’clock on Sun day m rmugs. Much discussion ensued on this pe- Al lerman Lachlison contending that barbers were mechanics, as they worked with tools, and macliau'. s were prohibited from working on the Sab- l»ih. he did not see why any exception should be male in tavor of barbers Alderman Johnson moved that the- prayer of the petition be granted, and that an ri.nance be drawn to meet the case. This resolution adapted—Aldermen Wylly, Lachlison, Johnson »:.! Casey voting in the affimative, and Alderman Fer" nli, Soullard aud McMahon in the negative. The question oi removing the railroad track in Li- tvrty street occupied much of the attention of the t -:i, aud was finally settled by the adoption of a its iution for the draft of an ordinance authorizing fiu- ■.. -nnection during the plessnre of Council, and t.’r.cuug the rate of speed to two and a half miles let hour.
