B7 LORD STRATFORD DE REDCLXFFC-
When Poland, marked for ruin, sank,
From house to house, from rank to rank.
The moan of anguish crept;
Yet ere the last dim vision fled,
There rose a cry. *‘8he is not dead!”
Its echoes—have they slept ?
She is not dead! a faded cheek.
And eyes from many a vigil weak.
Her cherished woes betray;
But quickened still by wrath and wrong,
Her bosom V. throbbing tide i9 strong.
And well she bides her day.
Though doom’d the stranger's floor to tread,
And stretch the bashful hand for bread
E'en Genius toils to earn,
Iler children scorn the gilded chain.
And all the patriot's faith retain,
With vows that never turn.
War’s clarion shout may All with dread
The burgher’s hall, the peasant's shed;
To them it heralds joy.
The warrior’s tramp, where’er ’tis heard,
Thrills them, as thrills some tender word
The long-lost, homeless boy.
Oh ! think what burning tears must fall.
When conquest's flag becomes the pall
To shroud a lifeless hope;
When those who braved the battle flood.
And rushed to swell it with their blood,
Grasp but a sind-spun rope.
How blest the maa whose sturdy brand,
High flashing o’er his native land,
Keeps hearth and altar pure!
Of altar and of hearth bereft,
Win t w reck has yon sad exile left ?
His lot is to endure!
A hard but glorious lot, to show
How clear iu sorrow’s night may glow
The lamp by virtue fed;
And, though his country’s voice be hushed,
Her cause betrayed, her freedom crush’d.
To prove she is not dead !
Not dead, yet mourning in her weeds,
Like one whose widow’d bosom bleeds,
Whose very soul is bow’d:
A nation droops, it never dies;
To Heaven its oath of vengeance flies;
Its grief, its shame, is proud.
In time thy garlands, Peace, must fade,
And steel once more the brow will shade,
Again the lance will gleam.
Hurrah! for Poland!—Lol she lives;
She combats, vanquishes, forgives!
How sweet, how bright the dream!

Relaxation of Bigotry In Japan.
, A careful statement of the internal state of things in
Japan has been drawn up and published by Dr. J. C.
Hepburn, ail American missionary at Yokohama,
dated June 14,1866. The missionaries have now been
in the country above six years, and they see a marked
change already, particularly iu the relaxation ol the
jealousy formerly exhibited towards strangers. He
says-
"Tue first decisive symptom of abatement of sus
picion on the part of the government was the sending
u about a dozen young men of rank from Yeddo to
Kanagawa to be taught English by one of the mis
sionaries. More recently the governors of Nagasaki
and Yokohama authorized schools to be opened for a
similar purpose under their auspices, and the Protes
tant missionaries were invited to take charge of them.
Ouo missionary at Nagasaki has, during the last year,
devoted three or four hours a day to the school there.
The school at Y'okohama has over fifty members; and
for more than two year* past three, and sometimes
four of the missionaries have been engaged in it,
teaching an hour or two each day. A large supply of
Ami rtcan school books has been imported by the
g ivemor for this school, and the teachers have in no
wise beeu restricted as to the manner or matter of
their teaching.”
Tlxe Metric System.
Our readers are aware that Congress has passed a
iaw authorizing the use of the metric system of
weights and measures. Great Britain has" recently
passed a similar law, and it is understood that iuboth
countries these permissive laws are preliminary to en
actments requiring the use of the system, which has
already come into use iu the principal countries of
Europe, and will doubtless soon bo the only system ol
weights and measures in commercial and Christian
countries.
The advantages of the system are manifest to all
who have examined the subject, and it can be fully
learned and mastered by any one in a few minutes.
In the last issue of that excellent paper, the Scientific
American, we find the following clear and concise ex
planation of the system. First it is necessary to learn
th* meaning of the four units:
Meter, the unit of length.
Liter, the unit of capacity.
Gram, the unit of weight.
Are, the unit of area.
Then it is necessary to learn the meaning of four
Greek numerals and three Latin. The Greek aro:
Deka 10
Hecto
Kill"
Myria
The LatiD prefixes are:
Deci l-10th
Cent! 1-000th
Mill: l-0000th
The system is decimal. There is a measure ten
times the length of the meter, and this is called the
dekameter ; tfiere is another 100 times the length and
this is called the hectometer. The same way with the
weights; there is a weight ten times as heavy as the
giam, and this is called a dekagram; there is another
100 times as heavy, and this is called a hectogram.—
The same prefixe.- are applied to all the units—the
Greek tor the multiples and the Latin for the frac
tions. When the meaning of eleven words are learned,
the system i6 completely mastered.
